How to Wear Graphic Prints

Digital prints are taking the fashion world by storm this spring. Striped, floral, animal, mod, geometric and tribal prints are all in this season, and they’re sure to be eye-catching, no matter which graphic print you choose to wear. Try out the vibrant printed trend by rocking a vivid pattern this spring, or take a shot at mixing prints if you’re looking for something bolder.

Graphic prints are the perfect way to make a statement with your ensemble. If the print you’re wearing is all-over and bold, remember to keep the rest of your outfit to a monochromatic scheme. With loud prints, it’s best to pair the graphic piece with something solid to balance the intensity. Mod prints were a smash hit on ready-to-wear runways at spring/summer 2013 shows a la Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors and Louis Vuitton. Mod inspired graphic prints are especially classy when worn on a dress. Dresses are an easy way to wear prints, since a dress can be styled with lots of different pieces. Check out some printed dresses below.

Looking to mix patterns?  Mixing graphic prints can be intimidating, but it is possible to do without looking too busy or clashing.  Start out simply by choosing prints that have similar colors in them, and use only one dominant print.  Scale is also an important thing to consider.  If your top has big, bold geometric shapes in the pattern, make sure your second printed piece has patterns that are much smaller so you don’t appear overwhelming.  Lastly, remember to limit your graphic prints to two separate pieces, such as a top and bottom or a scarf and shoes.

If you aren’t ready to mix patterns and you think graphic clothing might be a little too loud for you, try accessorizing with graphic prints.  It’s easy to incorporate the trend into your accessories because there are so many ways to accessorize.  Shop graphic accessories below.

Still unsure of how you can best pull off the graphic print trend?  Try wearing printed shoes as a statement piece!  Color-blocking your ensemble will allow you to play with color, and follow the previously mentioned rule of color palettes.  You can easily add a punch of intensity by slipping on printed shoes that have similar colors in their patterns. Remember that no matter how you try the trend, you want to look and feel confident in your ensemble.

Intern Closet: Neon Splash

It’s officially summer which means the sun-filled fun can finally commence! Between the music festivals, pool parties and outdoor weddings, summer has so many occasions in store for us. Since we usually worry about what to wear to these special occasions, we often think less about what to wear on a day-to-day basis! I  plan what I want to wear for the entire week and set those outfits aside. One of my favorite trends this season is neon and I am so excited to incorporate it into my wardrobe! In this sneak peek of my wardrobe, you can see how I embrace the trend by incorporating one neon aspect into each outfit.  By only adding a touch of neon to my outfits, I balance the one pop of color with more neutral or bland colors.

Outfit 1 (Left)

Cardigan: H&M

Tank: H&M

Cropped Pants: J.Crew

Shoes: Xhilaration, Target

Chain Necklace: Forever 21

Suede Clutch: American Apparel

Outfit 2 (Right)

Striped V-Neck Tee: Forever 21

Blue Shorts: J.Crew

Sneakers: H&M

Necklace: House of Harlow

Handbag: H&M

The flamingo pink purse adds a small, but powerful pop of neon pink to any outfit. A handbag, piece of jewelry or nail polish is a nice way to subtly incorporate a trend too. Though the handbag is small, it holds everything you need to either go shopping or hang out with your friends!

Neon is not the only trend in the spotlight this summer. Sheer pieces, high low skirts, pastels and color-blocking are other popular trends lately. Check out how Jessica F sports her high low skirt in her spring style article.

CL Brings You: How To Wear Summer Scarves

Summer’s arrival doesn’t mean you have to put away all of your scarves. In fact, it gives you the opportunity to embrace your lightweight and colorful scarves! Here are some ways you can flaunt your favorite ones this summer.

1. Spruce up a plain purse – Tie a loop knot with your favorite patterned scarf around a big plain tote or any ordinary looking bag. A longer scarf might drag on the ground, so  use a small scarf.

2. Keep your shoulders warm – Summer nights are known to get chilly so quickly transform a large scarf into a shawl. The elegant look will also transform your outfit from day to night.

3. Add  a bohemian touch – Turn a slender scarf into a hippie hairpiece by gently twisting it, wrapping it around your head and then tying it. This look is  great for summer music festivals!

4. Cover up at the beach with a sarong – Add a cleaner look to your beach attire by tying a large scarf around your hips and knotting it at one side. This is a good idea if you decide to take a stroll on the boardwalk or if you eat lunch by the pool.

5.  Create the infinity look – Who says you can’t wear a scarf on your neck in the summer? Make your own infinity scarf by tying a knot with the two ends of your scarf. Simply place your head inside the infinity loop, but don’t wrap it around again. That way, your neck can stay cool.

Scarves are only one way to accessorize this summer! For more ideas on how to accessorize in style this season, check out Rachel C’s tips.

Intern Closet: Jess’s Sundresses

Hello CL ladies (and gentlemen)!

Summer is either here or almost here and that means sundresses! Sundresses are absolutely essential pieces for many reasons. Nothing is easier to throw on when you’re headed to the pool, beach, an impromptu garden party, or just a day about town with friends. My favorite sundresses are made from cotton or chiffon because they’re breathable, light, and can be dressed up or down for all kinds of summer events. This year is all about pastels, brights, and nautical themes. I’ll show you a few of the dresses that are the backbone of my summer wardrobe.

courtesy Louis Jezsik

This dress is one of the best values in my closet. I’ve had it for about two years and it probably cost me about twenty bucks. I get so much use out of it ; I probably wear it 2-3 times a month as soon as the weather is nice.  Navy blue is a classic color but the aspects ofthe dress that keep it fresh are the cut (A –line works for any figure), neckline, and the lacy scalloped hem.

The back of the dress also has a cute back detail (shown left). The great thing about such a simple dress is its versatility when it comes to accessorizing.

My favourite hat and sandals (Rugged Warehouse) work perfectly for casual occasions.

Dress: London Times

My second go-to dress for Spring/Summer is inspired by the 1960’s mod style. I originally bought this dress for my Mom’s wedding in 2009 (it was on the beach!) and I have worn it to my cousin’s baby shower, a friend’s party, and the picture here was taken on a trip to NYC last summer. The classic, sharp A line cut of this dress is kept fresh and fun with the bold pattern and bright colors.

I’ve paired it with silver flats (Payless) and my favourite white cardi (H&M). You can also try metallic heels with matching bangles or salmon flats and matching cardi as a nod to this season’s trendy (yet classic)  color combination.  As a good witch once said “Pink goes good with green!”!

Dress: BeBop (Macy’s)

Finally, the latest addition to my summer wardrobe is this adorable dress I picked up for under $40! It’s another piece I’ve found to be incredibly versatile.  I’ve worn it to the theatre, a fraternity dinner party, Sunday brunch, and the picture here was taken at the Embassy of the United Kingdom here in DC. One of my favourite aspects of this dress are the pockets! So practical! My big colorful tote (Barnes and Noble) is great for carrying books or the giveaway from the Embassies that day but it’s so handy to be able to put my wallet, phone and keys in my pockets and go.

courtesy Andy Chang

This dress also has a cute cinched waist and a nautically inspired collar reminiscent of a bow on a sailor’s uniform. I chose to wear my Sperry Topsiders (DSW) that day because I’d be walking all over the city but this dress goes just as well with sandals, heels, or even oxford loafers. I also wore my Ray Bans to protect my eyes, along with lots of sunscreen!

Since I prefer a practical and minimalistic style I accessorized with a simple silver monogram pendant and my favorite silver and gemstone bracelet.

I hope I’ve given you some great ideas to style your summer!

Sunny’s Sanctuary: May Flowers– Floral Prints for Spring and Summer

Happy May CL fashionistas! There is so much to be celebrating: graduations, internships, moving out, moving away which means there is a lot going on in everybody’s closets. In Sunny’s Sanctuary, May’s weather patterns happen to be taking a life of their own. As the saying goes April showers, bring May flowers, and the flowers have sprung in Sunny’s Sanctuary. My closet is filled with a variety of floral prints, especially amongst blouses. Check out how I mixed three different floral printed tops for a sunny spring stroll, or a summer night out!

Spices and Tulips:

This colorful blouse is not a typical floral pattern; rather than yellow dandelions or over-sized pink flowers, the top is covered with a mix of fragile tulips. The design of the floral pattern is unique in the sense that you have to look closely to notice that they are flowers, and the mix of colors may turn people off at first, but once it’s on it just works. The colors remind me of jars filled with a beautiful mix of exotic spices! I snatched this from the local Francesca’s at Partridge Creek.

Pastels XL:

A little about me: I was born in Dallas, Texas, and although I consider myself a native Michigander I can’t let go of one innate part of the south. The large, bold prints! They say everything is bigger in Texas, and the XL flowers on this H&M blouse is sufficient evidence for the little bit of Texan I still have left. The reason that this blouse is one of my favorite florals is because of the lovely combo between the subtle pastel colors with the large bold prints. Now if this top had the spicy bright colors that the other top had, it simply could not work. But this top was a match made in pattern heaven. I paired the top with ankle-length, high-waisted dress pants and black patent leather stilettos from Zara. The blouse’s print is easy to mix and match; dress it daytime down with white or light pink pants, and dress it up with a hot pink or black skirt/pants.

Top: H&M

High-waisted Pants: H&M

Shoes: Zara

Necklace: Forever 21

Navy and Nudes

I styled this outfit around the pants, instead of the top. I am obsessed with high-waisted pants, and these H&M dress pants fit perfectly so I really wanted to find a nice top for the spring and summer. JC Penny’s has some great finds, and this navy floral top is one of the many you can scoop up for the upcoming season. The short-sleeve top is light and breezy, and the nude flowers along with a few peachy ones gave the outfit enough color, and the peach especially seemed to work well with my skin tone. I paired the navy and nudes ensemble with peach stilettos (also from Zara) and accessorized with gold jewelry!

A Classy Sunglass Warehouse Intern: Krista Weber dishes the secrets to finding the perfect pair of sunglasses

After what may have seemed like a long winter for some classy co-eds, spring has finally arrived and bringing tons of new spring trends! With the sun glaring down and temperatures rising, every classy co-ed should own a pair of trendy sunglasses. Don’t waste your time looking through magazines or spending hours at a department store looking for the right pair, but instead take advice from Krista Weber, an intern at Sunglass Warehouse. Krista is a fashionista who attends Butler University where she is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.

CL: What is your definition of a classy co-ed?

KW:  I would define classy co-eds as college students who stay true to who they are and enjoy keeping up with the latest fashion trends

CL: How do you stay classy?

KW: I stay classy by wearing cat eye sunglasses because they have a classic look but also help me keep up with my retro style.

CL: How does Sunglass Warehouse fit or cater to the needs of classy co-eds?

KW: Sunglass Warehouse caters to the needs of classy co-eds by staying on top of the latest trends and providing multiple sunglass styles to fit anyone’s personality and taste.

CL: What are the top trends for sunglasses this spring?

KW: Top sunglass trends this spring would definitely be cat eyes, brights, and round oversized sunglasses.

Cat eyes

CL: What are some tips to finding the perfect pair of sunglasses?

KW: To find the perfect pair of sunglasses, it is important to keep your face shape in mind as well as the color of your hair and skin. Sunglass Warehouse, has a free widget called The Sun Authority. The widget provides ways of identifying your face shape using images for comparison and then provides sunglasses suggestions accordingly. For example, I have a heart-shaped face, just like Reece Witherspoon, and cat-eye styles, which feature wide angles at the top of the frames, help to balance the jaw line. Generally, shapes that are wider on the top than the bottom work well as they minimize the forehead’s width and help balance the face. Frames with rimless bottoms or a straight top line will have this effect, such as aviators.

CL: How do you wear your sunglasses?

KW: I wear my cat eye sunglasses with a classy animal print spring scarf, jean button down, red jeans, a colorful cross body and a Fedora Hat. This is a very trendy look for spring!

My personal favorite are the aviators! What’s yours? Be sure to leave a comment and let us know!
