CL Director Dishes on Summer!

Hello lovely CL readers! I am sure you have read the fantabulous articles of the CL Interns Dish on Summer; and it is only fair that I give a bit of a dish as well!
So…in my own words…you have the dish of Shelly…..
- My goal for this summer is to…….
That is such a tough one! As the CL Interns, I am a huge goal setter. I formerly had the ‘let me do as much as I can’ issue, and would typically be so boggled down with work, I would forget something. However, I learned the ONLY way I could succeed is to set goals. My big goal for this summer is to learn everything I can about an herb garden! Sounds bizarre, but I recently purchased and plated herbs (basil and mint); and I am slowing adding more to the bunch (including a tomato plant!). Right now, I am using simple pots/potting soil. The good news: My dad visited me this past weekend, and we outlined a small plot for the herb garden. I grew up with a garden, and it is so nice to return to such a clean way of eating! Nothing is better than home grown food!
- What are your favorite summer activities….
I live in Louisiana, so let’s say one word – HOT! I am not big on ‘lay-ing’ out – this is very obvious from my fair complexion. But I do like most of the summer activities others like – the pool and backyard grilling! I am also a crazy Barnes and Nobles freak! I can stay in their for hours! Being a little older (gulp!), I have come to love sitting on my swing with a chilled coffee!
- How do you plan to stay in touch with your college friends?
I love this question! I will put a ‘Shelly spin’ on this question! I stay in touch with my friends from college pretty much the same way others do – Facebook, email, text, AND a weekend getaway!
And I am adding a few of my own!
- What are your biggest summer suggestions to college students?
Being the director/CEO of this lovely firm, I am amazed at the continued dedication of our CL interns! I am all about having fun, believe me; but I think it is important to achieve a great fun/work/college balance. Have fun with your friends! Along with having fun with friends and your summer job, do something educational – visit the library and check out a book on a topic you enjoy; visit the bookstore; attend a local cooking class; visit the art showing in your town; research companies you would enjoy working for.
- A crazy summer memory (while in college)……..
Too many! But part of my dietetic internship was to attend a sleep-over diabetes camp for one week. I am not the biggest wilderness person in on the planet, but I could handle a little bit of camping. The interns stayed in a ‘cabin’ and rounds were at 2:30 am. Well….to make a long story short – imagine wilderness, darkness (only flashlight) walking to the kids cabin. Pretty much I thought of every scary movie on the planet; and I was convinced some evil bear, flying squirrel, and icky snake was going to eat me. Lucky, the boogie man and bears were busy the week I was resident; and I was so happy to return to my home

May is MISS SHELLY MARIE MONTH!
May 8, 2010 by Kayla
Filed under Careers, CL ExCLusives!, Lifestyle, Nutrition, Shelly's Dish, Sorority Life, The Dish, The Intern Dish, Weekly Dish
The Interns of College Lifestyles (TM) thought the month of May would be perfect to celebrate our fabulous Executive Director, Shelly Marie. The National Panhellenic Conference has established April as “Advisor Appreciation Month”, and although Shelly is a form of an advisor to her Interns, she is much more than that. We wanted to express our love and gratitude to her by declaring the month of May as “Miss Shelly Marie Month” through College Lifestyles (TM).
Why Shelly Marie’s Interns love her:
Kayla: I love Shelly’s dedication, motivation, inspiration and especially her optimism!
Liz: I love Shelly because she was the first person to give me a real shot at writing and doing what I love.
Alle: I love Shelly because of the hard work and dedication she puts into not only College Lifestyles, but everything that she does! She has the most amazing personality and is truly one of the nicest people I have ever come across. She also makes her interns feel so appreciated and loved!
Sara: Shelly is the most positive person I have ever met. Throughout my year as a CL intern I have never heard her say a negative thing.
Patrice: She is so sweet! She always brightens our day with super sweet texts and e-mails and she really cares about us!
Kaitlyn: Shelly is just all around fabulous. Whether it is a sweet text message, Facebook wall post or an encouraging e-mail, she is always keeping in contact and wanting the best for us. I am so glad that I am a part of CL because otherwise I may have never been in contact with Shelly. I know if I ever needed anything she would try her best to help me out. I can only hope that I can meet her one day “in real life”!
Marisa: Shelly is the most supportive director and leader a working girl could ask for! She is always there for support, inspiration, and enthusiasm. Her amazing personality and kindness has made my work with CL seem anything BUT a job, and the best part of my day!
Briana: She’s awesome. Duh.
How can one NOT love Shelly? She’s a sweetie pie and so sincere. I love her even though she’s Team Bill.
Breanna: She is always spunky, upbeat and shooting for the stars. She genuinely cares about the wellbeing of us college kids!
Shannon: She is a golden ray of sunshine! Her positivity and zest for life is highly contagious.
What makes Shelly Marie special:
Kayla: Shelly is special because she truly lives by what she does and says and is the wonderful woman that she continually strives to be – Classy and Fabulous.
Liz: Shelly’s kind heart is what makes her special.
Alle: Shelly is special because of her heart and dedication she puts into College Lifestyles! She is so easy to talk to and she gave me such a wonderful opportunity when she asked me to become a part of the College Lifestyles family!
Sara: I am sure I am not the only one who will say this, but Shelly is the best text-messenger on the planet. I love getting a text on rainy, cold Monday mornings that tells me how fabulous I am. Shelly tries make sure that someone else knows how amazing they are every day.
Patrice: Like I said, she really cares. Even though she doesn’t actually know a lot of us in person, she still loves us and takes us under her wing.
Kaitlyn: Shelly is an extremely wonderful role model for everyone. She is very hardworking and took an amazing idea (CL) and ran with it. Between all of the different things that she does (CL, speaking tours, etc. times 100!) you would think that she would be one big pile of stress, but no! If anyone else took all of these things on, they would never be able to handle it with the class that Shelly does!
Marisa: With her upbeat personality and positive words and energy, Shelly is special because she makes everyone around her feel special. Her positivity is infectious, and she always puts a smile on everyone’s face.
Briana: She is fabulous and the sweetest person in the world.
Breanna: Her wonderful attitude towards the entire world I feel! Even when something is going wrong, she is positive!
Shannon: How can you not love Shelly??!?! She is so genuine and is always looking out for her friends and College Lifestyles interns. Her cheery texts, emails, Facebook posts, and CL blog posts always make my day.
CL Interns’ favorite memories of their Executive Director:
Kayla: A memory is always made whenever I get a chance to talk to her, but I think my favorite it would have to be the Wendy’s drive thru experience when Shelly came (on one of many) to visit Epsilon Gamma of AST for Fall 2009 Recruitment.
Liz: My favorite memory of Shelly is when she thought I was quitting the internship due to my school supervisor not approving and me checking that Shelly still WANTED me on.
Alle: My very first phone interview. I remember being so nervous, but as soon as she called, I felt at ease, because she was so easy to talk to! She made me feel so comfortable!
Sara: My favorite Shelly memory was on the first CL con. call when we all got a Shelly vocab. lesson so that we would know what she was talking about.
Patrice: When we had our welcome to CL call with her and she warned us about her “shelly-isms”! Totally cracked me up!
Marisa: My favorite memory of Shelly would have to be the weekly text messages she sends out to interns, simply asking us to have a great day and constantly reminding us how fabulous we are. After receiving one of Shelly’s affirmations, you cannot help but have an amazing day!
Briana: Any time I wake up to a text from her telling me about the silly things that happen to her.
Breanna: She gave a speech at Clarion before I was an intern, and came to visit the AST house–only got lost for a good hour in the 8 blocks between the house and campus. It wasn’t her fault, there are one-ways that screw everything up!
Shannon: How adorable she is saying “ya’ll” on the phone during conference calls.
Additional comments from Shelly’s Interns:
Kayla: I am so grateful I was given a chance to be an Intern for her. She is an amazing woman, the most positive person anyone will ever meet, and the passion she has for not only College Lifestyles, but every job clearly shines through! I love her so much!
Alle: I think Shelly is truly amazing because of how much heart and dedication she puts into College Lifestyles! I have had so much fun with this internship because of Shelly and the other girls! She truly is more than just an advisor! I really feel that she is such a fantastic person!
Patrice: Shelly is such a great boss. She makes me feel like I can ask her any questions and I can come to her with anything and she will help! She has a lot that she can teach us and she does a great job of doing that
Marisa: Shelly has made my internship with CL to be the most fun and rewarding position I’ve ever held. I will miss her dearly, but can’t wait to keep in touch with her! I know she’ll still be there to support my wonderful experiences in the ‘real’ world
Briana: Hey Shelly, Team Eric.
Breanna: Shelly is AMAZING and a great inspiration for any girl to have!
Shannon: Thank you so much Shelly for my internship experience with CL! I’ve made lifelong friends all over the world and cannot wait for all of us to meet up one day. I love our College Lifestyles family and cannot wait to see CL as a highly successful magazine or television show in the near future! You’ve got an amazing thing going here and I’m so proud that I could be a part of it.
College Lifestyles Executive Director, Shelly Marie, is dear to every one of her CL Intern’s hearts. We are so blessed to work under her knowledge and great wisdom and love to call her our “boss”. We could not ask for a better role model, advisor, mentor and friend as Shelly Marie is and will always be to each one of us. No matter the pathways that our stepping stones will lead us to and from, Shelly Marie is always one to count on if we need advice, a laugh, or a friend – in good or bad times. We love our Executive Director and we love College Lifestyles!
We now officially declare the month of May as “Miss Shelly Marie Month” and she will never fail to deserve this honor. With that said, THANK YOU so much again, Shelly, for all you do!

Where Has All the Sisterhood Gone? Part 1 – Embrace the Laughter!
March 28, 2010 by Shelly Marie
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Sisterhood Development, Sorority Life
Last weekend at SEPC, I had the pleasure of presenting ‘Where Has All the Sisterhood Gone?’ to a full room (YAH!) of fabulous ladies.
I firmly believe we (in sorority life) tend to lose our ‘sisterhood bonding’ for the exact same reasons a relationship ‘lost the spark.’ We may get too comfortable (ie – hanging out in the suite/chapter room 24/7); we may get too busy (class, work, study group, other organizations, and the responsibility of running a fabulous chapter!); and we may ‘get used to one another’ (ie – when a relationship gets boring). I can go on and on; but I firmly believe we, as sisters, forgot how to be sisters.
During my presentation, I told a hysterical story of an event that happened with my sister Susan. (lets just say it involved me taking a spill down a flight of stairs in an airport and Susan’s priceless reaction). To this day, Susan will call and say (through laughter and tears), ‘Remember when you fell down those stairs (insert laughter).’ Do I need to tell you she is one of those who laughs when folks fall down?

Susan and I on my special day! Sis + Sis after 13 years!!!
Seriously, think about the last time you had a really great laugh! I mean, a laugh where you fall out your chair and are crying of laughter! Many of us can think of the ‘Remember when stories with your family members at the holidays.’ Now, when was the last time your chapter had a big laugh? We want to embrace the laughter in our chapter!
How can we Embrace the Laughter in our chapter?
- Remember when? Do the exact ‘Remember when…’ with your sisters. Have an envelope at every chapter meeting and ask for individuals to write a story to place in the envelope. Depending on time, read one or two stories at the meeting.
- Go to or rent a FUNNY movie. (Just to note, my funny movies are Office Space, Happy Gilmore, and Billy Madison) This is great around stressful times (think mid-terms, finals week).
- Play Madlibs. Sounds cheesy? No way. Madlibs has specific ‘games‘ for the ‘Fabulous lady!‘ When completed, go around and read sentence by sentence. Use this during a break during recruitment practice.
- Improv. Your chapter is bound to have an ‘actress.‘ Split into teams and pick events/topics to Improv (Glee, music videos, best reality show, cartoon characters, etc).
- Play twister. Enough said!
- Photobooth. Go to the local mall and find a photobooth. Bring silly props and take tons of pics! Better yet – make your own photobooth pics/props! Make a bulletin board of the pics and have at your chapter meeting.
Get creative. Laughter is such a wonderful thing AND a great part of both friendships and sisterhood. Think about it, years from now, you all can call each other and go ‘Remember when…..’
Shelly Marie Redmond, MS, RD, LDN is the Executive Director of College Lifestyles. She loves the fact she has sisters who she can laugh with and lean on, and is so sad when she hears ‘My chapter just does not have a sisterhood bond.’ Stay tuned to her ‘Sisterhood Intervention’ program she is developing!

CL interviews Casey Gueren, Editorial Intern at Cosmopolitan Magazine & Bachelor Huntress
March 19, 2010 by Marisa
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Lifestyle, The Dish, The Intern Dish, What We Love
Do you have a dreamy classmate who gives Chace Crawford a run for his money? How about a guy friend wh
ose good looks and charm make you question all that hype over Robert Pattinson? If any of these questions ignite a head tilt and an enthusiastic “YEAH!”, then keep on reading. As you may have heard from our executive director Shelly Marie, College Lifestyles is currently assisting Cosmopolitan Magazine with their search for the hottest bachelor of 2010!
I caught up with former CL intern and current Cosmo editorial intern Casey Gueren, who shared with us the ins and outs of Cosmo’s fiercest battle: their annual Bachelor Search (think 300 … but add even more short shorts and subtract the bloody Spartans). She also gives us a sneak peek at what it’s like to work at the world’s most popular women’s magazine!
What exactly is the Cosmo Bachelor Search?
Every year, Cosmopolitan serves up the coveted Bachelor issue which offers sexy profiles of the hottest guys from all 50 states. (FYI: New this year, the editors are searching for guys from the District of Columbia too!) The Cosmo Bachelor Search is Cosmopolitan’s way of seeking out those hot, real-life hunks that every reader can then drool over.
What are the details of the contest?
Each bachelor must be nominated by a friend or family member. The nomination is short and simple, requiring some basic facts about the bachelor as well as two color photographs. Further details and the fine print can be found here, the major rules being that the guy must be a legal U.S. citizen, between the ages of 18 – 40 … And single, of course!
What is the grand prize for the winner?
The winner from each state gets to come to New York City to attend fabulous Cosmopolitan events and a steamy photo session. All top 50 guys will also have their profiles featured in the November 2010 issue. Finally, the one lucky guy named Bachelor of the Year will win $10,000 and a brand new wardrobe from Express.
What help do you need from CL readers?
We need your help, readers, finding the best bachelors from all corners of the country! Whether you’re from California or Idaho, we want to see the best you’ve got! Nominate your hometown hottie or your company’s favorite eye-candy, and he could be featured in Cosmo, with only you to thank!
What insider advice do you have for potential contestants?
We want to see your personality! While we may swoon over those modeling photos you had done, we would much prefer a snapshot of you smiling and have fun to show us that you’re a real guy that our readers would want to date. Cosmo readers are multifaceted, and they want more than just a hot body!
What do you do at Cosmo? How did you get involved in your internship?
I think I got this internship because of my intense determination and persistence! As soon as I saw the internship listing on Ed2010 (that’s Ed2010.com, the most invaluable website for magazine hopefuls!) I started working on my cover letter. Honestly, it was a lot easier than writing any other cover letters because this one truly came from the heart. I’ve wanted to work at Cosmo since before I should have been reading it! While I was waiting for a response from the magazine, I was working diligently for my magazine editing course at Rutgers. We were required to write a 10-page term paper on the Manhattan-based magazine of our choice. I obviously chose Cosmo. Some of the editors must have heard the desperation in my voice and actually allowed me to come to Hearst to interview them! Right before I left for the city, I received an e-mail from the editorial department requesting a phone interview with me. So, as I sat shaking in the Hearst lobby, I called the interview I would be interviewing with and asked if I could come up to meet her before our interview was to take place. She was incredibly sweet and obliging and and let me come up to introduce myself. I think that in-person contact definitely gave me an edge over the other applicants. After the phone interview I took an editing test and waited anxiously for an answer. A few weeks later I got an e-mail saying I would be interning with the editorial department! Now I am just dreading summer when this will all be over!
What role do you play in the Cosmo Bachelor Search?
The Cosmo Bachelor Search is actually one of the editorial interns’ biggest responsibilities. We’re the first line of defense for applications — which is why I recommend all of the nominations to be sent directly to me or one of the other interns. We sort through all of the applications and make sure they’ve included the correct information. We then pass them on to the editors who pick out the top contenders. The job then gets passed on to Kate White, who makes the final decision. As Editor-in-Chief, she knows exactly who our readers will want to see in the magazine!
Describe your ideal bachelor.
The other interns make fun of me for falling for too many of the bachelors! If they’re a school teacher, a firefighter, or a volunteer at the ASPCA they have my vote! But like most of Cosmo’s readers, I am looking for my own bachelor who is funny, smart, trustworthy, and has a huge personality.
Describe a typical day working at Cosmo. What is the best part about your job?
The best part about my internship is that there is no typical day! One day I’m interviewing physicians for scandalous health segments and the next day I am scouring the streets of New York City looking for hot guys that will let me take their picture! It’s every girl’s dream job.
How did your internship with College Lifestyles prepare you for your internship with Cosmo?
While nothing can really prepare you for Cosmo, College Lifestyles was the best experience I could have asked for! I’ve always wanted to write for a women’s magazine dealing with health and relationships and CL gave me the perfect clips for pursuing those publications. And of course, the CL girls were awesome confidence-boosters!
Any final thoughts?
For anyone out there searching for an internship right now, do not get discouraged! It’s such a tedious process, but it will be the most amazing experience once you’ve landed the internship of your dreams!
CL Note: For those of you who are searching for the perfect internship, College Lifestyles will be offering virtual internships for the upcoming summer! Keep checking the site for future updates.
Marisa Woodham is an intern at College Lifestyles (TM) and an English major at the University of British Columbia. Like Casey, she covets Cosmopolitan as her favorite magazine, and has a secret career ambition of being the employee who screens and selects the male models for the issues. Mm Mm good.

Wow! I am so excited! ‘Eat Well and Be Fabulous’ received a raved review from The Campus Socialite!
‘Eat Well and Be Fabulous’ is based on 4 individuals – a high school senior, a student/sorority leader, an intern, and a professional – and their trails/tribulations in the big, bad world of diets! All learn how to eat, not diet! I loved writing the book; and I loved reading the review by The Campus Socialite!
As stated in The Campus Socialite:
‘Unlike many of the diet books I have read in the past, Shelly knows what it is like to be on a college campus and has figured out how to get around the bad choices we often see daily.’
‘Although my favorite part of the book is towards the end where she gives us reasonable choices to choose from for breakfast, lunch and dinner.’

Part of being fabulous is giving thanks – thank you so much The Campus Socialite for the great review.
