Letter from the Managing Editor, October 2012

Hi classy co-eds,

It’s Debra, College Lifestyles™ Managing Editor, and this is my October letter to you.

I know this is the point in the semester where extracurriculars are in high gear and midterms, papers, and ever-looming finals can cause a lot of stress – I remember it, I know exactly how you feel right now.

But guess what – it will all be over in just a short couple of weeks.

I have a sign hanging in my room that my father got for me when I was born. It’s a list of life lessons, and at the bottom is perhaps the most important: “keep worries in perspective.”

I struggled with this a lot in college. Papers, midterms, finals, quizzes, pop quizzes, extra assignments, going to class, grades, grades, grades, on and on never-ending. Oftentimes, I felt like I was drowning in a midst of things people told me I HAD to be good at because it meant my entire life.

Grades are important. But they aren’t everything. Neither is being involved in every single extra-curricular activity you think will make employers want you. It’s all about balance, taking things in moderation, learning about what’s important; life is one huge balancing act.

But it gets easier. You learn how to manage. You learn what things are worth your time, and what things aren’t. You learn that what people tell you should be important, isn’t always that important.

You learn to worry less.

You learn to stress less.

You learn to live for you.

Shelly Marie Redmond and I care about you, our readers. If you ever have questions about college life, email us at info@collegelifestyles.org. We are dedicated to writing articles about college life, especially things that are concerning to you, or things that you need answers to. We’re here.

CL Love,

Debra Schreiber

Managing Editor, College Lifestyles™

Why I Went Through Recruitment

College is bursting with fun and new opportunities for everyone. Joining Greek life is one of those amazing opportunities. The decision to go through formal sorority recruitment is an adventure and journey to finding your home away from home. Everyone has their own reasons to go through recruitment. Check out why these classy co-eds decided to go Greek!

“I went through recruitment to carry on the Greek legacy within my family, as well as to make my transition to college a bit easier. Three years later and I’m still so grateful for choosing to join a sorority!”

Mallory Hatten, University of Southern Mississippi Senior, Phi Mu

“I went through recruitment because I didn’t know a single person at UConn.Although it was scary and a little overwhelming, being a part of Greek life has opened so many doors for me, both with opportunities in school and the job field and all over the country. I know I can go to any of my sisters’ homes wherever I am and feel like part of their family.”

Allison Cohen, University of Connecticut Junior, Kappa Alpha Theta

“I went through recruitment to try to find my niche at school. My freshman year at school wasn’t the best because I wasn’t involved in anything I felt I really belonged in. I got dragged out to recruitment by another friend but am so thankful she made me do it. It allowed me to find a group that I felt I really belonged in and totally changed my college experience for the better.”

Jessica Molinari, Hofstra University Junior, Phi Sigma Sigma

“I am the youngest of three girls and best friends with my mom. I wanted the same connection with people at school since I was away from home. I found that and more in Alpha Sigma Tau.”

Samantha Schafer BS in Psychology from Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville, Alpha Sigma Tau

“I decided to go through recruitment because I’m an only child and I’ve always wanted “sisters.” Also, it’s a great way to get involved on campus!”

Christina Hunt, University of Florida Freshman, Phi Mu

“I went through recruitment to find a group of girls who I could really connect with on a closer level. To find best friends.”

Lauren Russell, University of Central Florida Freshman, Delta Zeta

“I went through recruitment because I was looking for a home at school since I was so far from home. My school is huge (almost 40,000 students!) and I was really nervous about how I would find my niche and make friends. Going through recruitment really helped me find somewhere I could call home almost 1,000 miles away from my real home.”

Emmy Boyd, University of Missouri Sophomore, Phi Mu

If you’ve gone through recruitment, why did YOU decide to go Greek?

The Life of a Panhellenic President

Being your campus’ Panhellenic President is a fun, exciting, and challenging role.  There is so much more that goes on “behind the scenes,” when meetings are not going on.  Your Panhellenic President is more than the face of your sorority community.  Your Panhel President does way more than run a meeting every week.  I should know, I was Penn State Erie’s Panhellenic President for the 2012-2013 school year.

A typical day for me went something like this:

Wake up, look over the Panhellenic calendar for that week and see what Panhel was holding or what chapters were holding. If Panhellenic-sponsored events were being held, I checked on the constitution, to make sure we were following policies, unless otherwise decided upon.

Go to class. My mind seemed to be constantly pre-occupied with what needed to be done that day or week, especially during formal recruitment and Greek Week.

In between classes, I would head over to the Panhellenic office to do some work and office hours.  There, I would check my Panhellenic email, respond to the many emails I would receive from Presidents, executive officers, delegates, people in the community (I was contacted so many times for Panhellenic to be involved with community events or campus events) or the advisor.  I always kept a little sticky note in my planner so I could keep track of what I needed to include in my weekly report for the general meeting as well as the private executive board meeting.  I would also use this time to touch base with my officers and committee directors.

Go back to class, feeling better if I used by time in the office wisely.

After classes, I would go home and repeat my office duties, if necessary.

Official Duties:

2 meetings with the Greek Life advisor, one that was just her and myself, and one that was her, myself, and the President of the Interfraternity Council

Meet with the Chancellor at least once a semester

Meet with delegates, presidents, and officers when necessary (at least one per week)

Attend other chapters’ events, as well as the events of the fraternities

My little, Krissy, won “Most Outstanding Chapter Member” for her efforts with Alpha Sigma Tau. In the center is Matt was awarded “Fraternity Man of the Year,” and I am on the right, holding my award for “Sorority Woman of the Year.”

Make sure officers are getting their responsibilities done

Attend “New Member Academy,” a six to eight week program our new members went through to learn about campus resources, the chapters, and Greek Life.

Chair Ad-Hoc committees from time to time

Read the Manual of Information (I tried to read a little bit each day)

Attend IFC meetings

…sometimes more!

Being the President of the Panhellenic Council was by far the most fulfilling position I have ever been blessed to hold.  It was an absolutely wonderful experience and I am so sad I can’t be involved with Panhellenic in the same way (I still reach out to the new President and help her).  If you are thinking about running for presidency, I would really recommend it.  I learned about the other chapters on campus and really got a whole new appreciation for what it means to be in a sorority.  One word of caution: Understand the time commitment and read the duties in your Panehellenic’s local constitution before accepting or running for the position!

Interview With A Greek Leader

Jaylee Underwood is an inspiring and active sister in Greek life, and sets a great example for sisters in giving back to their organizations. College Lifestyles sits down with Underwood, and discusses what she got out of Greek life, and how she plans to give back.

Jaylee Underwood and Brittany Nicole

CL: Tell College Lifestyles about yourself.

JU: I am a Special Education major at Western Illinois University. I am entering my last year at Western, looking to start my student teaching this coming spring! I have been involved on my campus through Cheerleading, Greek Life, and a variety of other organizations. I love my job! I work for the McDonough County Special Recreation Association servicing community members with disabilities through recreation programs and events year round. I recently became engaged to the love of my life through a picture perfect proposal, and look forward to the adventure of life after college!

CL: What made you decide to join a sorority?

JU: I was never too interested in Greek Life, especially because I had cheerleading to keep me plenty busy. My sophomore year of college came and I was looking for a new way to be involved and branch out not only with the University, but the community as well. I chose to go through Fall formal recruitment, and found my perfect match with Alpha Sigma Tau!

CL: What have you recieved from sororiity?

JU: Greek Life has provided me with amazing time management skills. It has also taught me to hold myself and others accountable for actions and responsibilities. I got exactly what I was looking for in terms of community service and philanthropic venues. I was fortunate enough to service others all around the country and experience what this service could teach me about myself! At the most recent convention, I learned about all of the ways I can stay involved and continue my sorority journey, and definitely plan to do so. Most importantly, the Alpha Epsilon chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau has provided me with a group of women who I call sisters. I have witnessed these sisters stand by each other and myself through thick and thin! It is these memories and those that are to come that make the whole experience really come together and provide reassurance that joining AST was everything I thought it would be and so much more!

CL: How has being Greek made you a leader, and gave you leadership roles?

JU: I am fortunate that being Greek has taught me all it has about being a leader. About 2 months into my official membership, I was placed on executive board as a treasurer. I was able to observe learn from the current president and other executive members. This was exactly what I needed to take on the leadership role of President. As President, I strive to provide leadership development to all members. This is because exceptional leadership is such an important skill to have in today’s world, and I am true believe that everyone can be a great leader in their own unique way!

CL: Do you have any tips for women who want to advance in their Greek organization?

JU: I am all about setting goals! I believe that if you see something that you could see yourself doing, or you have a role that you could see yourself in, set goals to lead you to your desire! For example, if you want to run for recruitment director of your organization, set some personal goals to achieve this! These goals could be to read up on the recruitment rules to really understand the process, serve as a recruitment assistant, or even simply showing up to every event to show dedication to your chapter and it’s success and growth! Also important is to ask your sisters for advice! Sometimes you might not realize what you would excel in, and it’s great to get that validation from your sisters!

CL: Now that you’re serving on the National Nominations Committee, how do you plan on giving back to your National Organization?

JU: I feel that this step onto the National Nominations Committee is exactly what I needed to open my eyes to all that can be accomplished after the collegiate journey! As a member of the Nominations Committee, I will have the opportunity to search out new candidates for our National Officers who will carry on the legacy of Alpha Sigma Tau! Seeing all of the amazing alumnae women at convention who are still so involved truly motivated me to do as much as I can for the National Organization. I look forward to volunteering for the National Organization and doing all that I can to help the organization continue to do amazing things!

Let College Lifestyles know if you know great Greek women who are great leaders in your community!

Travel Makeup With Lauren Maker

Courtesy of Makeupforlife,net

If you’re a traveling co-ed, you know that having a comfy outfit for the plane is incredibly important, and so is packing light. But what about your makeup? Motives Cosmetics’ savvy Lauren Maker dishes to College Lifestyles the best makeup bring on your travels.

Is your carry-on the best place to stash your makeup?

“Yes,” Maker said. “If you check your luggage, you don’t know how it’s being treated.” Suitcases can get tossed around as they make their way through the check line, causing makeup to break. Once on the plane the environment can damage your makeup, liquid kinds in particular. So put it in your carry-on and travel worry-free.

What is the easiest way to get your makeup to fit TSA regulation sizes?

Courtesy of Beautylish.com

Most lip glosses and liquid foundations are under 3 oz. and “shouldn’t be difficult to fit in a little bag,” Maker said. Always make sure to double check. Some drug stores sell kits that allow you to measure products out into 3 oz. containers.

Should you wear makeup on longer flights?

“You can unless you have itchy eyes or touch your face a lot,” Maker said. She highly encourages washing your face after the flight as the environment could dry out your skin.

Since packing light is super economic, what are some makeup items we can leave at home? What are makeup items we should definitely bring?

“Depends on what type of trip it is,” Maker said. Traveling for business? Leave the eyeliner at home. Heading to the beach? Ditch the liquid foundation and grab the powder instead. But always bring Maker’s favorite beauty tool: mascara.

Is it OK to buy makeup abroad?

“Most makeup manufactures ship oversees,” said Maker, which means you should be able to find your product in a foreign country. However, Maker warned, “Check for allergies.”

Maker does consultations, gives beauty tips and sells beauty supplies. She can also get you started on a Motives Cosmetic’s career! Email her beautybylaurenm@gmail.com or learn more about what she does by visiting her Motives Cosmestics page http://motivescosmetics.com/beautybylauren.

Hosting A Huge Philanthropy Event

Buffalo Chicken Dip? Yum. Cupcakes? Double yum. Mud? Triple yum. These are some fantastic fundraisers to earn money for your chapter’s philanthropy. But have you ever considered doing something bigger? Because you can.

Little events raise money, there is no doubting that. But big events can raise so much more, bring your sisterhood together, and make your chapter better known on campus.

Nine years ago, the sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau, Beta Delta Chapter at Duquesne University, began Miss Duquesne. Today it is their biggest philanthropy event, not to mention an incredibly successful one. This year, the sisters of Beta Delta raised $9,000.

So, how can you start an event like Miss Duquesne?

President Emalea Helisek and a Make-A-Wish rep kick off Miss Duquesne 2012/Photo Credit Debra Schreiber

First, think about the values of your chapter and the philanthropies it supports. Then, think about the values of your university. Then, think – how can you tie these into an event that is simple, elegant, fun, and will get everyone on campus involved?

Miss Duquesne was the perfect choice for Beta Delta. The event highlights the activeness of the sisters in supporting their philanthropy; the money supports their philanthropy; the theme of Miss Duquesne ties in with Duquesne University’s mission statement; and anyone belonging to a campus organization is welcome to participate – non-Greeks too!

Emalea Helisek, current president and this past year’s Miss Duquesne Chair, said in an email interview, “Miss Duquesne is a pageant for any woman on campus in an organization. She fundraises, performs a talent, and is judged on beauty, talent, and questionnaire… We have five judges from advisors to Fathers as well as a Make-A-Wish representative. These girls represent their organization and the Duquesne mission statement.”

So, how do you get people involved? Look around the room. See those girls? They’re your sisters.

“My sisters were a huge help within their given committee and being able to reach out to the other organizations that they are members of,” Helisek said. “They all helped with decorations and the preparation of the pageant as well as getting the word out about the event. The other organizations were able to help through their donations and fundraising as well as spreading the word to their friends.”

First, you need someone to run the show as chair. Make sure they know that planning an event of this size is a huge responsibility.

Said Helisek about planning Miss Duquesne, “As the Miss Duquesne Chair, a lot more time and planning went into the pageant than I had expected. First, we must contact all campus organizations for contestants, this was the biggest struggle… then the theme and colors and decorations are chosen, then we contact local businesses for donations for our silent auction, we also contact the contestants for pictures, bios, and if their family, friends, or organization wants to buy a ‘Good Luck’ ad for the program. Then we have to order the food or snacks that we want there, buy gifts, prizes, decorations, etc. Sell tickets and have PR around campus to let people know about the event. We teach the girls a short opening dance. We design and order shirts for everyone in the pageant as well as judges and sisters. We have to count money, tally up scores, and make sure the show runs smoothly!”

Sounds like a huge responsibility.  But look again. Those sisters? They’re here to help. Have one person be the head of the committee, and then five or so people to fill out the rest of the committee. That way the chair will only have to contact one person instead of six to learn what has been done and what still needs done.

When asked about how she delegated the work, Helisek replied, “This was my first goal and plan, was to delegate positions and committees to help relieve some of the stress from my shoulders. I chose a team leader for each committee and let the sisters choose what committee they wanted to be in. Then I would talk to each of the team leaders about their deadlines and check up on them to make sure they were doing their job!”

Make committees for PR, ticket sales, programs, HR, food, etc.

“Each of these had their own committee, the silent auction committee contacts local businesses, split up the donations in to different baskets and people bought

tickets to raffle off the prizes,” she said. “The music committee was in charge of collecting the girls’ music, creating a playlist to play during intermissions, and playing all music during the show. The PR committee was in charge of creating a design for tickets, posters, Facebook, etc. And then all the sisters signed up to work the tables to sell tickets.”

An event as large as Miss Duquesne can be more difficult than a few smaller events. Helisek agreed, “I would say yes, sometimes small ones are just thrown together, but one large one requires a lot of thought and preparation as well as teamwork and dedication for a longer period of time.”

Overall, Helisek enjoyed her time as Miss Duquesne Chair. “Even though it was stressful and hectic at times I loved it and would completely do it again!” she said, adding that her favorite thing about Miss Duquesne was, “seeing everyone try their hardest to fundraise for such meaningful foundations and being able to donate the amount that we were able to!”

Proceeds from Miss Duquesne go to Habitat for Humanity, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Duquesne Legacy Fund.

Miss Duquesne has won two awards: Best Philanthropic Event 2012 and Most Collaborative with Delta Zeta last year for helping with their philanthropy event, Big Man On Campus.

Major Of The Month: Digital Media Arts

Are you artistically inclined? Do you consider yourself computer geek chic? Then the Digital Media Arts major just may be for you.

Gabrielle Tomasko (C) 2012

This month, College Lifestyles spoke to Gabrielle Tomasko, 22, a 2012 graduate of Duquesne University, via messaging about Digital Media Arts, which her degree is in.

Tomasko did not come to Duquesne with Digital Media Arts in mind, but decided that it was for her during her sophomore year.

“I picked Duquesne largely for its Integrated Marketing Communication program. I ended up double majoring with the Digital Media Arts degree later,” Tomasko said.

What drew her to Digital Media Arts?

“I initially wanted to work in advertising as a copywriter until I realized that I was more interested in the design aspect of advertising rather than the conceptual,” Tomasko said. It was an elective course that helped her solidify her decision.

“I took an intro design course as an elective and realized that I enjoyed learning about graphic design,” she said. “It helped that my teacher was very interested in the subject matter and earnestly answered many of my questions about the field. Sometimes when I have a question, I still email him.”

Gabrielle Tomasko (C) 2012

Classes Tomasko took for her Digital Media Arts degree included, “Graphic Design Process, Introduction to Flash, and Media Ethics to name a few,” she said, and then elaborated:

“While Graphic Design Process specifically taught principles, Intro to Flash taught the technical aspects of the Adobe program Flash. Media Ethics concentrated on theory and discussed the ethical dilemmas that can occur when working in media … Overall, I enjoyed my classes. I liked how with many of the courses, the quality of my work depended on my own effort. While I had specific guidelines to fulfill, my own creativity and effort allowed projects to become portfolio quality work.”

Gabrielle Tomasko (C) 2012

As with every major, there were pros and cons.

“I like this major a lot because it is based on a creative discipline,” Tomasko said. “Other majors grade solely on test results, but the Digital Media Arts major grades mostly on projects or papers. Classes are also very hands-on. Oftentimes you are in a computer lab and can design while learning from the professor.“

“My only critique with this type of education is that the classes are geared towards teaching basics,” she added. “If you rely on learning solely through coursework, then you may be in for a surprise after graduation. I suggest using online tutorials and designing outside of school. This will only strengthen your skills and make you a better designer.”

Tomasko gained experience outside of the classroom through an internship.

I had multiple internships, but my last one was geared towards graphic design,” she said. “It was helpful because I gained a lot of experience. I designed a logo, brochure, and website for a startup company.”

Her advice to anyone considering this major?

“I would say that you should figure out what aspect of digital media you are interested in as soon as possible,” Tomasko said. “This major has both multimedia and web design concentrations. Once you have an interest in a particular type of media, your course selection will become more personalized to your career goals.”

Gabrielle Tomasko (C) 2012

Tomasko’s current goal, “is to continually learn new things—with graphic design, the technology is always changing. The only way to succeed in this field is to adapt to the changes,” she said. She is currently looking at freelance assignments while searching for full-time employment.

Have more questions about Digital Media Arts? Let us know in the comments below!

CL Interviews Miss America 2012, Laura Kaeppeler, Part I

Laura Kaeppeler, 24, is a graduate of Carthage College, where she studied Music and Vocal Performance.  Two years ago her friend Caitlin Gomez, who was Miss Kenosha at the time, suggested she give pageants a try. Kaeppeler the advice to heart and went on to win the Miss Kenosha title. She then placed second-runner up Miss Wisconsin, a title she eventually won and competed with in the Miss America Pageant. She was crowned Miss America 2012.

Courtesy of Miss America

It’s no doubt that Kaeppeler’s singing talent gets her noticed at competitions - Gomez encourged Kaeppeler to enter because of it.

“She (Gomez) attended Carthage College with me and was in the music department with me and said, ‘You have a talent, you’re involved in your community, this seems like it would be a great fit for you,’” Kaeppeler said in her email interview. “I had no idea what I was doing or what the Miss America organization stood for. I just threw myself into the competition, but figured if I did well for not having much preparation time, I could perhaps compete the following year and win my state. That was just this past year, and here I am.”

If it was her talent that got her started, it is her philanthropy that keeps her going. Kaeppeler works with Circles of Support: Mentoring and Advocating for Children of Incarcerated Parents, a very personal cause.

“My father committed a white collar crime and was sentenced to one year in federal prison,” Kaeppeler said. “Having walked in the shoes of the children of incarcerated parents, I have first-hand experienced the emotions of pain, isolation, fear and guilt that are accompanied with having a parent in prison. As Miss America, I have a very large platform to discuss this topic at a national level, to raise awareness for the millions of children in our country who have a parent in prison, and to also encourage children who have a parent in prison to dream larger than life, and to believe those dreams can become a reality.”

As Miss America, Kaeppeler gets to speak about this issue around the country, attend charity events, and sing.

“I travel 20,000 miles per month and am in a different state almost every 72 hours” she said. “I can be found in a variety of different appearance venues such as speaking on my platform, visiting a Children’s Hospital as The National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network, working with our corporate sponsors, or singing in a performance venue.”

And when she’s not practicing her music or heading off to a new state?

“I am also a huge baseball fan and enjoy rooting for and attending Chicago Cubs’ games,” she said.

Check back next week for Part II, a Q&A that every college co-ed should read!

Keep the Spring Break Feeling all Semester Long!

If you’re headed off for spring break this week, don’t be disappointed when you come back to finish the semester off! You can still enjoy the rest of the school year even while you’re hitting the books.

Put up photos. No, not on Facebook. Get prints of some of your best photos and put them into frames, especially beach pictures if you have to go back to a cold place.

Incorporate spring themes into your wardrobe. Check out Shanae’s Colorful Jeans article and Morgan’s NY Fashion Week Looks for Less.

Eat fruit. There’s no better way to keep a beachy feeling than biting into an orange or strawberry!

Exercise. Take some time to go to the gym or go for a walk – working out will leave you feeling less stressed.

Get a mani-pedi. Try the colors suggested by CL Intern Sasha.

Stay in touch with friends from home. Make plans to see each other over Easter break, and keep one another updated on your lives while you’re at school. This is also a great time to start planning a spring brunch.

Start planning your summer vacation. Check out a few locations and cruise lines. It will keep your vacation appetite at bay.

Buy a new book. There’s nothing better than reading at the beach, but a dorm room will have to suffice for now. Try some of these CL readers’ recommendations you may have missed last semester and the CL Book Club reading “The Violets of March.”

Take a nap. After a long week of vacation time, your sleep schedule is probably a little bit off, especially if you were in a different time some. So, get your Z’s!

But don’t slack off! Keep up with your work – SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE!

“Ingredients

1 head garlic

1 tablespoon EVOO – Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Salt

1 pound whole wheat fettuccine

1 cup cream

1 cup basil leaves

1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves

1/4 cup pine nuts, toasted

1/2 cup chicken or vegetable stock

Ground black pepper

1/2 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

“Yields: Serves 4

“Preparation

“Preheat oven to 400ºF.

“Slice 1/4-inch off the top of the garlic head, exposing the cloves. Place the garlic onto a square of aluminum foil and drizzle with about 1 tablespoon EVOO. Wrap the foil up around the garlic to enclose it and roast it in the oven until golden brown and very tender, about 40 minutes.

“When the garlic is ready, place a large pot of water over high heat for the pasta. When the water is boiling, salt it, drop in the pasta and cook to al dente according to package directions. Heads up: before draining the pasta, reserve a mugful of starchy cooking water, then drain and reserve the pasta.

“While the pasta is cooking, place a medium-size pot over medium heat with the cream. Heat the cream just below bubbling. Squeeze the roasted garlic cloves from the head into a small bowl and mash into a paste. Add the garlic paste to the cream and reserve warm.

“In the bowl of a food processor, combine the basil, parsley, pine nuts and stock. Process into a smooth paste, season with salt and pepper, and reserve.

“When the pasta is ready, combine it with the roasted garlic cream, pesto, starchy cooking water, some salt and pepper and the grated cheese. Toss well and serve with Tomato and Mozzarella Salad alongside.”
