CL’s Summer Reading List
May 15, 2012 by SashaG
Filed under Books, Celebs & Entertainment, CL ExCLusives!, CL on your Campus, College Tips, Movies, New York University
Remember how much you hated the summer reading you had in elementary school? Now that we’re in college, summer is often the only time we can skip the bulky textbooks and read (gasp!) for pleasure. CL helps you out with our very own summer reading list, categorized based on what kind of book you want to read.
1. Short Series: The Hunger Games
Chances are, you’ve heard of a little series called The Hunger Games. Yes, it’s huge, and with the second movie coming out in November 2013, this franchise is only going to get bigger. So what better time than summer to acquaint yourself with this pop culture epidemic? Sure, you can just see the movies, but the books are better. Immerse yourself this summer in Suzanne Collins’ world.
2. Long Series: Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones is the first installment in the fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. You might know it better for the well-respected HBO series of the same name. With an expected seven books and only five out, Game of Thrones is perfect for the reader looking to start a new love affair with a book series.
3. Beach Read: Where We Belong
Looking for a slightly more meaningful beach read? Check out Emily Giffin’s Where We Belong, a heartwarming mother-daughter story that’s still light enough for the beach. Emily Giffin has also published Something Borrowed, which turned into a movie starring Ginnifer Goodwin that came out last May.
4. Summer Cookbook: Vegetarian Cooking at Home with The Culinary Institute of America
Vegetarianism has been getting a lot of attention lately, for its health benefits as much as its eco-friendliness. But you don’t have to go vegetarian to try all the delicious recipes in Vegetarian Cooking at Home with The Culinary Institute of America from the Culinary Institute of America. And with 200 recipes, you’re sure to always have a fresh idea for Meatless Monday.
5. Movie Mania: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
On June 22, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter will hit theaters. As the title suggests, the movie tells the story of President Abraham Lincoln, who finds that vampires are trying to take over the United States and sets out to destroy them. Want a head start? Check out the book that the story is based on, by Seth Grahame-Smith.

What To Pack For A 3-Day Weekend
May 15, 2012 by SashaG
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, CL on your Campus, College Tips, Fashion, Fashion, Lifestyle, New York University, Study Abroad, Travel
Off for a weekend trip this Memorial Day? Check out our handy guide on what to pack!
1. Bottoms: Jeans, Shorts, Skirt.
Assuming you’re gone for 3 days, 3 bottoms are all you need. Jeans go with everything and can be worn more than once, which is perfect for a vacation, especially if there’s a chance you’ll stay there longer than expected. Shorts are a summer staple, and a mid-length skirt can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion.
2. Tops: Cardigan, Tank, 2 T-Shirts.
On a weekend trip away, layering can be your best friend. Especially in the summer, when the days are super-hot and the nights can get surprisingly cold. So bring 2 regular tops, but add a tank and a cardigan for layering purposes. Also, bring both tops and bottoms in neutral colors so it’s easier to match.
3. Shoes: Gladiator Sandals, Heels.
In the summer, gladiator sandals will take you pretty much anywhere. On the off chance they won’t, bring a pair of simple heels. Just make sure to keep your toes prettily pedicured.
4. Bags: Clutch, Tote.
A clutch and an everyday bag are all you need on vacation. If you’re headed to the beach, try a straw tote. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a tote large enough to carry all your items to your destination.
5. Makeup + Accessories: Bright and Few.
Just because your tops and bottoms are neutral doesn’t mean your entire outfit has to be boring. Try brightening up your look with your makeup and accessories. Just don’t go overboard – think a couple of statement pieces, not your entire closet.
6. Miscellaneous: Sunglasses, Extra Underwear, Swimsuit, Chargers.
Sunglasses and a swimsuit are summer staples that everybody always forgets. Bring the swimsuit even if a pool or beach are not in your plans – you never know when you might need it. As for the extra underwear? If you end up staying an extra day, it’s the one thing you’re really going to want. The chargers go without saying, if you’re bringing any kind of electronics (iPod, cell phone, laptop).
What do you normally bring on a 3-day weekend? Let us know in the comments!

Daughter Approved Mother’s Day Gift Guide
May 15, 2012 by MarthaA

If this is your first time away from home on mother’s day or if you’re just stumped about what to get here, here are some favs. Here are the top three special things me and my friends like to do for our moms on their special day.
Card and flowers are not as cliché as you think. Nothing says you care like a bright may flower, like lilies, or a colorful daisy. Cards from the heart are also a mom’s favorite. If she doesn’t hear from you a lot during the school year, a heartfelt card about how much you love her will totally make her day!
A Visit Home: sounds a obvious and a little understated, but visiting home will really make your mom happy, especially if you go to school farther away. If you can afford to home for mother’s day weekend, it’ll be a great opportunity to spend time with your whole family. To your mom, you are one of her greatest gifts. So why not give her the gift that is you!
Dinner and a movie: There’s nothing wrong with taking your mom out on a date. Me and my mom hit the mall on the regular and go to all her favorite shops. Plus, if your mom is kind of picky and hard to shop for like mine, let her run free in her favorite shop and pick something out. Surprise her by buying it for her. Not only is it a nice gesture, it’s a nice way to show you care—after all, she did spend at least 18 years buying stuff for you, didn’t she?
Social Media Shoot-out: Understated, and odds are, you probably do it anyway. Why don’t you tweet your mom, or tag her In a post, and let all your followers know how much you care. Dedicate a song to her, or post a picture of her and make it your default. I do this all the time to advertise to support something I really care about, so what’s more important than your mama?
These are ideas just to get you started if you don’t know what you want to do for your mother’s day. Remember that you are your mother, or any other female who played a huge part in your life deserves to know how much you care about them!

CL’s Guide to College Graduation
May 10, 2012 by DebraS

Graduation has come for so many of us! Having just gone through, I can tell you it is an experience you will never forget. If you’re considering not walking, I highly encourage you to do so. You’ve worked so hard and come so far, so celebrate it! Here are some tips on how to prepare for the big day, and what comes next!
Make sure everything is in order. Moving out? Double check that you have EVERYTHING. Still have some library books? Make sure to return them. Parking ticket? Pay it off!
Send out invitations. Invite family and friends! This is a time to celebrate! Send out invites to commencement, diploma ceremonies, graduation parties, etc. with the dates, times and locations clearly written.
Spend time with college friends. You may not see them for a while (but not ever again!). Have fun, relax, and figure out how you would like to stay in touch, whether it is through letters, email, texting, annual reunions, LinkedIn or Facebook.
Plan your outfit. You want to look your best for the occasion, so dress in style – it’s your day! With warmer months coming (and the amount of people likely to be filling the room at your graduation) wear something light and summery, but formal. Also, plan to wear comfy shoes, as you could be standing for quite a while.
CL Quick Tip: Consider decorating your mortar board so your folks can find you in the crowd.
Plan your make-up and hair. Again, with the summer months upon us, too much make-up will look fussy and could melt down your face. Try a lighter look. For hair, wear it down under you cap, but put it up when you can to keep cool. If your hair tends to frizz, be prepared with product.
Charge your camera. And make sure you have extra batteries! Take as many pictures as you, and have you family take pictures, too, can so you can add them to a scrapbook later.
Mingle and network. Colleges sometimes have receptions after graduation, so use it as an opportunity to speak with professors and advisors, thanking them for their guidance and support and asking them to remember you when career opportunities in your field pop up.
Send thank you emails or cards. We all have favorite professors, mentors, advisors and supervisors. Let them know how much they mean to you and the impact they have had on your college life.
Look for a job. If you haven’t started looking, or haven’t found one yet, search, search, search! Make sure your resume is up to date and apply like crazy, and keep track of when and where you apply. Some good places to start are the College Lifestyles job bank, careerbuilder.com and LinkedIn.
Be proud! You’ve earned this. Congratulations! This is a big step, but you can do it!
Debra Schreiber is a Senior Writing Intern with College Lifestyles and a recent graduate from Duquesne University with a B.A. in Journalism and a B.A. in Spanish. She loved participating in graduation, and while she will miss her Duquesne family terribly, she is excited for what comes next!
3 Reasons You Should Say “Yes” To Summer Romance
May 10, 2012 by TianaB
Filed under CL Daily, CL ExCLusives!, CL on your Campus, College Prep, College Tips, Dating and Relationships, Motivational Monday, Penn State, Relationships, The Dish, Thoughtful Thursday
Warm weather-induced endorphins (the stuff that makes you happy) mixed with the rush of college students coming home for vacation makes summer lovin’ sound so appealing. Unless you’re just getting out of a messy situation (that makes romance sound less appealing), turning down the chance of being swept off your feet is nonsense! You’ll soak up three life lessons by riding the wave of summer love slowly and carefully.
1. Learn To Seize Opportunities
Passing up the potential for a rewarding relationship equals denying yourself of something fun on purpose. How boring! Go to a carnival with your next door neighbor who did a bit of growing up since last summer. Take a chance by starting up conversation with the cute lifeguard at your local pool. In other words, as Cher Horowitz (“Clueless,” anybody!) would say: “Carpe diem!” Translation: Seize the day!
2. Learn To Live
Sometimes your girlfriends don’t always know best. They’ll steer you in the wrong direction to protect you from the inevitable—getting hurt. But guess what? You get nothing out of dodging heartbreak-bullets. Instead of attempting to avoid problems before they even arise, let life transpire.
3. Learn About The Art Of Storytelling
Post-summer storytelling is the cliché part about flings that makes it all worthwhile. Don’t let August creep up on you without having a few juicy chronicles to show for it. Just look at how far Nicholas Sparks got with The Notebook! Jot down details of your fling and who knows, you just might conjure up a bestselling novel.

Fearless Collegiate: CL Interviews Nicolette Winn, Founder of the No Longer Silenced Movement
May 2, 2012 by Amber Ferguson
Filed under Body Image, College Tips, Fashion, Interviews, Lifestyle Interviews, Prince George Community College, Workout Wednesday
It’s rare to find a person like Nicolette Winn. As only a Junior at Southern Illinois Carbondale she has been able to take her experience of growing up in a household rattled with abuse and addiction and turn her efforts into helping others and raising awareness. Nicknamed The Fashionable Philanthropist, Nicolette has her own blog which features regular posts about her fashion and volunteerism inspirations. Earlier this year she launched her website the No Longer Silenced Movement to help teens realize they are not alone and to give them inspiration. Her efforts have already garnered media attention in a segment with Channel 12 Heartland News. When Nicolette’s not helping build houses for Habitat for Humanity or working with The Women’s Center she likes to catch up on episodes of “The Real Housewives” and indulge in chocolate. This ambitious and determined collegiate is never without a smile and we can all learn something from her.
Q: Many victims of childhood and teenage abuse don’t share their stories. What makes you inspire others to seek help and make a difference?
A: “As a child, I never had a positive role model to whom I could relate. I was the tiny, cute girl who excelled in academia, dominated sports fields, worked two jobs, wore high heels to school, and almost always had a smile on my face. I think it would’ve helped me so much to see another female who is similar to me who survived child abuse and continued to succeed in life. My goal is to serve as a role model to teenagers to show them how to seek help. During my teenage years, I never knew that I could report what was occurring in my household, and I definitely understand which resources to utilize to do so. Most importantly, I want to become the first nationally recognized face of child abuse survival in order to inspire teenagers to pursue their dreams. Abuse often hinders self-esteem, and I want them to understand the important of increasing their self-confidence and following their passions.”
Q: How did you start the No Longer Silenced Movement?
A: “Throughout high school, I would journal my abuse and how it made me feel. Because I feared the wrath of my father, I always shredded and promptly disposed of my writings. In June of 2011, I decided that I wanted to publish a book of stories of people who had survived child abuse and found success. After posting in numerous Craigslist advertisements in various cities and receiving no response, I halted this effort. In a plea of distress, I e-mailed Jo Coleman, the CEO of Psychology Today and begged for his assistance. I figured, “Hey! This man is successful. He should have some beneficial tips or connections.” Mr. Coleman’s response was basically that this is my mission and that I needed to make it happen, and everything suddenly made sense. This February, I launched my blog, No Longer Silenced, which ran a week long feature pertaining to and in honor of National Children of Alcoholics Week. My father has a drinking problem, so I decided to share a few of my stories. The response I received from readers was astonishing, and I decided to continue my blog but give it a new twist. Soon after, I launched The Fashionable Philanthropist, which combines my love of community service with my passion for fashion. After blogging for National Children of Alcoholics Week, I felt like I needed to do something more…something bigger. I thought about what I would’ve needed as a teenager in order to help myself during my abuse, and I wished that I would’ve had an example to follow. At this realization, I decided that I would become that example for other teens and decided to organize and launch my first event, the No Longer Silenced National Child Abuse Prevention Month Awareness Walk. Approximately a week after the walk, I launched my official No Longer Silenced Movement website.”
Q: As a Fashionable Philanthropist you share great finds on your blog. Where do you go to find the best deals?
A: “Oooo! I have specific stores that I like for specific items. For example, I always get my jeans at Hollister. Because I have such a small frame, they fit me perfectly and are decent priced. A few weeks ago, I got two brand new pairs of jeans for about $40 each. As far as socks, I’m addicted to Old Navy and haven’t worn much else since my freshmen year of high school. I think it’s about time that they give me a VIP card! Each Christmas, I would receive between 20-30 pairs because that was about the only thing I ever wanted. I have two places that I go for underwear – Victoria’s Secret and Wet Seal. For full coverage, I opt for the spandex boy shorts at V.S. and for lacey, less coverage, I hit Wet Seal. When shopping for basic wardrobe staples, I always search stores such as Old Navy and Wet Seal. Around Christmas, I purchased approximately 13 camis at Old Navy for $5 each, and I believe 8 long sleeved tees for $6 each. Normally, these items cost more, but I found them on Old Navy’s “Act Fast” sale. For solid color v-necks and camis, I also hit up Wet Seal. Wet Seal has a mix-and-match 5 for $20 deal, so last time I got a fabulous color palette of v-neck t-shirts and a few camis. When considering my more stylish pieces, I generally stick with Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. My philosophy with these stores is, “Shop Hard, Shop Often.” Both stores are constantly changing their inventory, so they tend to be hit-or-miss; however, I guarantee that one hit trip will make up for all of your other misses. Also, I shop end-of-season clearances, but I usually steer clear of Marshall’s and TJ Maxx clearances during these times. As far as and nail polish is concerned, I’m a drug store junky. I usually purchase makeup at Wal-Mart; however, if you’re looking to play with new colors, you may want to consider purchasing a less costly version at Dollar General or Dollar Tree. I love to buy $1 lipsticks at Dollar Tree to test out the colors. Dollar General is also a gold mine for $1 nail polishes, and if you like the acrylic/gel French Tip, you can purchase DIY nails and save approximately $700 a year. Oh, Queen Helene cocoa butter lotion, which is fantastic and smells great, is cost efficient and can be purchased at Wal-Mart or Dollar General. One more thing…athletic clothes. Always go to TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, or Gordmans.”
Q: How would you describe your personal style?
A: “My personal style depends on my mood. Some days, I love to wear white lacey dresses with pearls and chic red lips, while other days I find myself in bright, fun patterns with tall, yellow wedges. For class, I usually dress more casual and wear a lot of jeans and layered basics. I try to dress up this look by adding accessories such as headbands and scarves. I absolutely do not own a pair of sweat pants because I made myself donate them all. As a student, it is easy to become lazy because most people wear sweats to class. If I don’t own them, I can’t wear them; however, if I’m feeling athletic, you may find me in a matching track suit or neon Nike running shorts. Overall, I would say that my personal style is forever involving. Because I was forced to grow up at such an early age, I did enjoy fashion, but I didn’t have much of a chance to develop my personal identity. So now, at the age of 21, I am always shopping and trying out new looks to discover what best suits me.”
Q: As a student you have an organization and participate in events to raise awareness about child abuse. How do you manage your busy schedule?
A: “Time management! My planner is my life, and I would be completely lost without it. I have also become a talented at multitasking, and I try to focus on what’s important. For example, if I catch myself surfing social media, I remind myself that I am only gifted so much time, and I could be using that time more appropriate to focus on school, work, and the No Longer Silenced Movement.”
Q: Who is your support system now?
A: “Professionally, I see a psychiatrist and a counselor. On an everyday basis, my support system consists of my boyfriend and his mother, my friends, and some of my co-workers. An addition and important support system is the high volume of those who read the Fashionable Philanthropist and contact me with words of support.”
Q: What are your career goals?
A: “My highest ambitions are to obtain a Ph.D in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and work in an applied field. Currently, I believe that I would prefer to have a career in which I interact with people as opposed to working at a computer all day, so I’m currently exploring job opportunities within this field. I believe that it would be so incredible to improve the work lives of numerous people because it can drastically impact their health and mental state.”
Q: As a kid you were made fun of for being too skinny. What motivates your confidence today?
A: “Growing up, I was often called names such as, “Twigalette,” but today, I love my body. I am so proud to have a healthy and strong frame that is capable of such high achievement. Each day, I started looking at myself in a full length mirror, and I realized my body looked much different than how I pictured. I had always pictured myself as looking starved and gangly, but in all actuality, I look physically fit! What motivates my confidence today is looking in the mirror and admiring my beautiful body and all that it has achieved and appreciating its strength.”
Q: At College Lifestyles we have the Beauty by Confidence Campaign. What is your definition of beautiful?
A: “My definition of beautiful is looking and feeling my best in a way that pleases my expectations. I am not defined by what others say or believe.”

Vlogging 101: 5 Simple Rules to Become A Successful Video Blogger
May 1, 2012 by Sana Ashraf

Platforms like YouTube and the ever growing and never-ending transformation of the World Wide Web have created so many different opportunities for both the young and old to share their thoughts, memories, talents, and a recently erupting phenomenon tutorials with the globe at the click of a couple buttons. Since sharing talents is so simple, what makes a vlogger successful? Although, I wouldn’t call myself a vlogger (though I have dabbled a bit) here are some quick rules or tips on making sure your vlogging path goes unmatched.
1. Pretend Like You’re Talking to a Friend: It’s easy to get intimidated by the camera, even when it’s the PhotoBooth on your Mac that you love, oh so much. As soon as you hear the sound of the camera starting, your body tenses up and you see everyone in the world with their eyes on you (even if you’re recording alone). To get over this mini-fear, first mute the sound on your computer or hand-held camera, and more importantly, just pretend like you are having a conversation with a friend and showing them how to do something. Trust me, it helps!

2. Practice Makes Perfect: As cliché as this saying might sound, it is 110% true. Before every segment of my video blogs, I did at least 10 tries before I got it right. Practice is the key to perfection. An amazing way to practice is to type out a script pre-shooting. Just as you woud write out and spend time on an article on your blog, you should also write out your script for the vlog. The same amount of work and thought should go into it, so when you practice it’ll be perfect.

Write out your script or type it up, practice, and then shoot your video blog. Photo Credit: Google
3. Be Yourself: There are so many video bloggers out there now, and many have bigger fan bases than one can fathom, but that doesn’t mean you should try to be them. Look at them for inspiration, but avoid imitation. Don’t try to be funny if you’re not, don’t try to act ditzy if it isn’t you… just be you and the rest will fall into place.

4. Get Creative: With the power of technology, and wonderful gadgets like iPhones, you can make a video within seconds and upload it to your blog or YouTube. However, what makes a vlogger succesful is the creative guts behind the scenes. Make the video fancy, and that does not mean being an expert videographer. All you need are some simple and easy-to-use applications like iMovie, and you are well on your way to getting creative!

For Mac users, iMovie is very easy to use and you can follow a guide on Apple's website. Photo Credit: Google
5. Be Confident: You create your own destiny. If you’re not confident in yourself, how can anyone else be confident in you? Own it, work it, make it happen.

Style by the City: Miami

You may be slaving away through finals, but your wardrobe doesn’t have to look like it. Take some inspiration from a tropical city like Miami, Florida, to add a little summer fun to your wardrobe.
Casual Outfit: Freedom Tower
With its fresh architecture, Miami’s Freedom Tower is a great inspirational outfit for a stylish summer casual outfit. Start with a pair of white pants (5), $24.95, and a cropped yellow shirt (1), $44.90, which is in keeping with the tower’s color scheme. Beige wedge sandals (4), $39.99, and a straw clutch (2), $16.80, neutralize the outfit and keep the outfit dressy but casual. But since it’s summer, don’t be afraid to go a little overboard on the brights – we chose feather turquoise earrings (3), $14, and red lipstick (6), $14.50 in honor of the Cuban flag – the Freedom Tower is currently being used as a Cuban refugee center.

A Classy Sunglass Warehouse Intern: Krista Weber dishes the secrets to finding the perfect pair of sunglasses
April 29, 2012 by SherelleB
Filed under A Classy Featured Reader, Ask the Intern, Ask the Intern, CL ExCLusives!, CL on your Campus, College Tips, Fashion, Fashion Interviews, Louisiana Tech University, The Intern Dish, What We Love
After what may have seemed like a long winter for some classy co-eds, spring has finally arrived and bringing tons of new spring trends! With the sun glaring down and temperatures rising, every classy co-ed should own a pair of trendy sunglasses. Don’t waste your time looking through magazines or spending hours at a department store looking for the right pair, but instead take advice from Krista Weber, an intern at Sunglass Warehouse. Krista is a fashionista who attends Butler University where she is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.
CL: What is your definition of a classy co-ed?
KW: I would define classy co-eds as college students who stay true to who they are and enjoy keeping up with the latest fashion trends
CL: How do you stay classy?
KW: I stay classy by wearing cat eye sunglasses because they have a classic look but also help me keep up with my retro style.
CL: How does Sunglass Warehouse fit or cater to the needs of classy co-eds?
KW: Sunglass Warehouse caters to the needs of classy co-eds by staying on top of the latest trends and providing multiple sunglass styles to fit anyone’s personality and taste.
CL: What are the top trends for sunglasses this spring?
KW: Top sunglass trends this spring would definitely be cat eyes, brights, and round oversized sunglasses.
CL: What are some tips to finding the perfect pair of sunglasses?
KW: To find the perfect pair of sunglasses, it is important to keep your face shape in mind as well as the color of your hair and skin. Sunglass Warehouse, has a free widget called The Sun Authority. The widget provides ways of identifying your face shape using images for comparison and then provides sunglasses suggestions accordingly. For example, I have a heart-shaped face, just like Reece Witherspoon, and cat-eye styles, which feature wide angles at the top of the frames, help to balance the jaw line. Generally, shapes that are wider on the top than the bottom work well as they minimize the forehead’s width and help balance the face. Frames with rimless bottoms or a straight top line will have this effect, such as aviators.
CL: How do you wear your sunglasses?
KW: I wear my cat eye sunglasses with a classy animal print spring scarf, jean button down, red jeans, a colorful cross body and a Fedora Hat. This is a very trendy look for spring!
My personal favorite are the aviators! What’s yours? Be sure to leave a comment and let us know!
