Change Up Your Hairstyle: CL Reviews Pro Extensions

With prom and graduation season in full swing many of us would like to add some length, volume, or color to our hair. Have you ever thought about Clip in hair extensions? Pro Extensions is the premier brand for affordable 100% human hair. What I love about clip in extensions is the versatility I have with them. With my Pro Extensions I can finally try the Fishtail Braid I’ve been wanting to wear and now my ballerina bun looks full and fabulous.

My Story

I received the Pro Cute #1b Off Black, 20 inch extensions ($199.99). At first I was torn about which color I should get because my hair is chocolate brown in the back but lighter in the front. I’m very happy I got the Off Black because it has tints of brown in it. (If you’re unsure about the color consider getting the color ring before making a purchase.) I choose the Pro Cute collection instead of the Standard or Remy collection because it still has the cuticle intact. This was important to me because the cuticle will keep the hair protected from heat, UV light, and chemicals, which means they will last longer :)

The customer service is awesome! With any purchase of $60 or more there is Free Express Shipping. The moment they arrived I couldn’t wait to try them out. The set comes with everything you need (1) 8 inch wide weft with 3 clips, one (1) 7 inch wide weft with 3 clips each, two (2) 6 inch wide wefts with 3 clips each, six (6) 1 and 1/2 inch wide wefts with 1 clip each) plus two test pieces in case you want to dye the hair. The hair isn’t too shiny which is good because it looks more realistic. Mine are straight but they also have a Body Wave collection, which is cool too. They are so easy to use and comes with a How-To Guide. My only complaint is that I wish they had more lengths to choose from because 20 inches is super long. Yet, once you experiment with curling and/or trimming the hair they will become your new favorite hair accessory.

Why I Recommend

If you want a change without the commitment definitely try Pro Extensions. Whether you want to add some streaks or go full on Ombre why potentially damage your hair with bleach or other chemicals when you can clip in and go? Prices for the extensions range from $49.99-249.99 depending on length and quality.  To get more information or see more pics check out their Facebook and Twitter! To learn more hair tricks read their blog.

Pro Extensions is giving a 10% discount to College Lifestyles Readers. Use code “college” at checkout!

Disclosure: A special thanks to Pro Extensions for sending College Lifestyles the Pro Cute hair extensions products to conduct this review.

Fearless Collegiate: CL Interviews Nicolette Winn, Founder of the No Longer Silenced Movement

It’s rare to find a person like Nicolette Winn. As only a Junior at Southern Illinois Carbondale she has been able to take her experience of growing up in a household rattled with abuse and addiction and turn her efforts into helping others and raising awareness. Nicknamed The Fashionable Philanthropist, Nicolette has her own blog which features regular posts about her fashion and volunteerism inspirations. Earlier this year she launched her website the No Longer Silenced Movement to help teens realize they are not alone and to give them inspiration. Her efforts have already garnered media attention in a segment with Channel 12 Heartland News. When Nicolette’s not helping build houses for Habitat for Humanity or working with The Women’s Center she likes to catch up on episodes of “The Real Housewives” and indulge in chocolate. This ambitious and determined collegiate is never without a smile and we can all learn something from her.

Q: Many victims of childhood and teenage abuse don’t share their stories. What makes you inspire others to seek help and make a difference?

A: “As a child, I never had a positive role model to whom I could relate. I was the tiny, cute girl who excelled in academia, dominated sports fields, worked two jobs, wore high heels to school, and almost always had a smile on my face. I think it would’ve helped me so much to see another female who is similar to me who survived child abuse and continued to succeed in life. My goal is to serve as a role model to teenagers to show them how to seek help. During my teenage years, I never knew that I could report what was occurring in my household, and I definitely understand which resources to utilize to do so. Most importantly, I want to become the first nationally recognized face of child abuse survival in order to inspire teenagers to pursue their dreams. Abuse often hinders self-esteem, and I want them to understand the important of increasing their self-confidence and following their passions.”

Q: How did you start the No Longer Silenced Movement?

A: “Throughout high school, I would journal my abuse and how it made me feel. Because I feared the wrath of my father, I always shredded and promptly disposed of my writings. In June of 2011, I decided that I wanted to publish a book of stories of people who had survived child abuse and found success. After posting in numerous Craigslist advertisements in various cities and receiving no response, I halted this effort. In a plea of distress, I e-mailed Jo Coleman, the CEO of Psychology Today and begged for his assistance. I figured, “Hey! This man is successful. He should have some beneficial tips or connections.” Mr. Coleman’s response was basically that this is my mission and that I needed to make it happen, and everything suddenly made sense. This February, I launched my blog, No Longer Silenced, which ran a week long feature pertaining to and in honor of National Children of Alcoholics Week. My father has a drinking problem, so I decided to share a few of my stories. The response I received from readers was astonishing, and I decided to continue my blog but give it a new twist. Soon after, I launched The Fashionable Philanthropist, which combines my love of community service with my passion for fashion. After blogging for National Children of Alcoholics Week, I felt like I needed to do something more…something bigger. I thought about what I would’ve needed as a teenager in order to help myself during my abuse, and I wished that I would’ve had an example to follow. At this realization, I decided that I would become that example for other teens and decided to organize and launch my first event, the No Longer Silenced National Child Abuse Prevention Month Awareness Walk. Approximately a week after the walk, I launched my official No Longer Silenced Movement website.”

Q: As a Fashionable Philanthropist you share great finds on your blog. Where do you go to find the best deals?

A: “Oooo! I have specific stores that I like for specific items. For example, I always get my jeans at Hollister. Because I have such a small frame, they fit me perfectly and are decent priced. A few weeks ago, I got two brand new pairs of jeans for about $40 each. As far as socks, I’m addicted to Old Navy and haven’t worn much else since my freshmen year of high school. I think it’s about time that they give me a VIP card! Each Christmas, I would receive between 20-30 pairs because that was about the only thing I ever wanted. I have two places that I go for underwear – Victoria’s Secret and Wet Seal. For full coverage, I opt for the spandex boy shorts at V.S. and for lacey, less coverage, I hit Wet Seal. When shopping for basic wardrobe staples, I always search stores such as Old Navy and Wet Seal. Around Christmas, I purchased approximately 13 camis at Old Navy for $5 each, and I believe 8 long sleeved tees for $6 each. Normally, these items cost more, but I found them on Old Navy’s “Act Fast” sale. For solid color v-necks and camis, I also hit up Wet Seal. Wet Seal has a mix-and-match 5 for $20 deal, so last time I got a fabulous color palette of v-neck t-shirts and a few camis. When considering my more stylish pieces, I generally stick with Marshall’s or TJ Maxx. My philosophy with these stores is, “Shop Hard, Shop Often.” Both stores are constantly changing their inventory, so they tend to be hit-or-miss; however, I guarantee that one hit trip will make up for all of your other misses. Also, I shop end-of-season clearances, but I usually steer clear of Marshall’s and TJ Maxx clearances during these times. As far as and nail polish is concerned, I’m a drug store junky. I usually purchase makeup at Wal-Mart; however, if you’re looking to play with new colors, you may want to consider purchasing a less costly version at Dollar General or Dollar Tree. I love to buy $1 lipsticks at Dollar Tree to test out the colors.  Dollar General is also a gold mine for $1 nail polishes, and if you like the acrylic/gel French Tip, you can purchase DIY nails and save approximately $700 a year. Oh, Queen Helene cocoa butter lotion, which is fantastic and smells great, is cost efficient and can be purchased at Wal-Mart or Dollar General. One more thing…athletic clothes. Always go to TJ Maxx, Marshall’s, or Gordmans.”

Q: How would you describe your personal style?

A: “My personal style depends on my mood. Some days, I love to wear white lacey dresses with pearls and chic red lips, while other days I find myself in bright, fun patterns with tall, yellow wedges. For class, I usually dress more casual and wear a lot of jeans and layered basics. I try to dress up this look by adding accessories such as headbands and scarves. I absolutely do not own a pair of sweat pants because I made myself donate them all. As a student, it is easy to become lazy because most people wear sweats to class. If I don’t own them, I can’t wear them; however, if I’m feeling athletic, you may find me in a matching track suit or neon Nike running shorts. Overall, I would say that my personal style is forever involving. Because I was forced to grow up at such an early age, I did enjoy fashion, but I didn’t have much of a chance to develop my personal identity. So now, at the age of 21, I am always shopping and trying out new looks to discover what best suits me.”

Q: As a student you have an organization and participate in events to raise awareness about child abuse. How do you manage your busy schedule?

A: “Time management! My planner is my life, and I would be completely lost without it. I have also become a talented at multitasking, and I try to focus on what’s important. For example, if I catch myself surfing social media, I remind myself that I am only gifted so much time, and I could be using that time more appropriate to focus on school, work, and the No Longer Silenced Movement.”

Q: Who is your support system now?

A: “Professionally, I see a psychiatrist and a counselor. On an everyday basis, my support system consists of my boyfriend and his mother, my friends, and some of my co-workers. An addition and important support system is the high volume of those who read the Fashionable Philanthropist and contact me with words of support.”

Q: What are your career goals?

A: “My highest ambitions are to obtain a Ph.D in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and work in an applied field. Currently, I believe that I would prefer to have a career in which I interact with people as opposed to working at a computer all day, so I’m currently exploring job opportunities within this field. I believe that it would be so incredible to improve the work lives of numerous people because it can drastically impact their health and mental state.”

Q: As a kid you were made fun of for being too skinny. What motivates your confidence today?

A: “Growing up, I was often called names such as, “Twigalette,” but today, I love my body. I am so proud to have a healthy and strong frame that is capable of such high achievement. Each day, I started looking at myself in a full length mirror, and I realized my body looked much different than how I pictured. I had always pictured myself as looking starved and gangly, but in all actuality, I look physically fit! What motivates my confidence today is looking in the mirror and admiring my beautiful body and all that it has achieved and appreciating its strength.”

Q: At College Lifestyles we have the Beauty by Confidence Campaign. What is your definition of beautiful?

A: “My definition of beautiful is looking and feeling my best in a way that pleases my expectations. I am not defined by what others say or believe.”

SarahFit Talks College Diets & Establishing a Brand to CL

Perhaps you’ve come across Sarah Dussault while browsing her over 200 videos on her popular YouTube channel looking for the latest fitness idea or read her blog for some cool recipe ideas. This University of Delaware alum has over 80 million views on YouTube and is your trusty source for everything diet, exercise, and lifestyle related. When she’s not watching her favorite T.V. show “Revenge” she eats her favorite treat, cupcakes, while sipping some SmartWater. With a dedicated “College” section on her blog, Sarah spoke to College Lifestyles about the challenges of being a healthy collegiate and how she navigated a hectic schedule and eating right.

Q: How is your website different from other health/fitness sites?

A: “I think I symbolize what most women struggle with. I love fitness and not all the girls do but granted I love the cupcakes and I love college. Telling someone in college to completely not dink and cut out sweets because that’s not realistic. That’s what every diet and weight loss group says. So when I started to do my channel I found that I have a lot of college followers. My site’s different in that I say it’s okay to have a drink or two and I show that I do screw up sometimes but its not one of those things where you should throw in the towel if you have a mess up. Get back up on the horse and try again. I’m one of the few bloggers that also has a strong YouTube channel.”

Q: Do you have any tips for busy college who say they don’t have the time to exercise?

A: “I don’t like accepting excuses. I was a college student I know what it is like to make the time. All you have to do is 20 minutes. Whether that’s 20 minutes in the morning or before your classes, that’s the easy answer. Those who are really strapped for time I tell them to move their body more and focus on their diet. You cannot exercise enough to overrule a bad diet. If you’re going to drink 10 beers and have late-night pizza, you’re not going to be able to exercise enough to not have a weight gain. In order to counterbalance you need to make good decisions when it comes to your diet. When it comes to moving your body, walk to class and take the stairs. If your on the phone and want to call your mom or call your friend at another school instead of sitting on the couch and talking, walk you burn more calories.”

Q: How did you compose the College Diet Plan?

A: “It’s a combination of literally what I’ve used to lose weight when I was in college. Sophomore year I lost all the weight I gained freshman year and kept it off. The College Diet is a mix between I did and what I do now. It’s clean eating (for the most part) and you have to use what you have available. It’s quick suggestions of what you could put together in your dorm room, dining hall, or student center. The foods don’t necessarily need to be cooked or stored in the fridge.”

Q: What are quick healthy meals for college students on the go?

A: “One of my favorite things is having an apple, a handful of almonds, and a Laughing Cow mini Babybell cheese. Its portable, you can put it in your bag, and it will stay fresh for a few hours. When you don’t have time to eat lunch that’s a quick little 250-calorie lunch. If you can run home to your apartment in between classes try making a smoothie. Other things are stir-fry. If you have a kitchenette stir-fry is awesome. At the dining hall go for brown rice and a salad.”

Q: For YouTube how did you gain so many subscribers? Do you have any tips?

A: “I started making YouTube videos in 2006 and basically it’s about being honest, be yourself, and have consistency within your brand. This is something I don’t have because I started so early and Twitter didn’t exist when I started my YouTube channel. Have your YouTube name, Twitter name, and Facebook name all under the same. Interact with your fans. When they leave you a comment, respond. If they give you a suggestion on a video to make, make it.”

This season Sarah’s sporting the neon trend. To watch her bikini ready or prom workouts be sure to check out her YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook page!

Want a Japanese Inspired Look? Try Tokidoki!

Remember when Gwen Stefani made the Harajuki look the hottest style back in the “Hollaback Girl” video? Well today you can achieve an everyday look with Tokidoki products. I reviewed three of their products and I guarantee you if you like vibrant colors and convenience, Tokidoki is the brand for you!

Perfetto Eyeliner: Who knew your eyeliner could let you become an artist? Tokidoki’s Perfetto Eyeliners ($16) create a perfect liquid line every time. I tried the Carina (Eggplant) and Captain Banana (Rich Chocolate) colors. What I loved about the eyeliners is that you can create a thin or thick line is a snap. Your makeup won’t smudge, dries fast, and is easy for a beginner to use. The colors are bright, which is wonderful for the spring and summer!

Perfetto Eyeliner

Roulette Gloss Trio: Lip-gloss has never gotten easier to use. A lot of times I find myself switching my lip color throughout the day and carrying more products in my purse. Not anymore! The Roulette Gloss Trio ($18) has three different mini glosses in one a cute innovative case. Best of all the glosses are made without Parabens. If you want the baby pink look for the day or the more sophisticated darker look for night, you can find it with the Roulette Gloss Trio. I especially liked how the glosses were not sticky and had just the right amount of shimmer.

Roulette Gloss Trio

Rollerball Fragrance: Tokidoki is such a cute brand because they have characters with their own unique stories. I tried the Adieu Rollerball and Ciao Ciao Rollerball ($18 each). Trust me you can’t lose these fragrances. With their unique character head as the top and awesome scents, they will be your new favorite accessories. I found the Ciao Ciao scent sweet and floral. The Adieu scent was more spicy and fresh. I would definitely recommend both.

Rollerball Collection

My Super Quick School Look: Glide the Carina Perfetto Eyeliner on your upper eyelids twice and follow up with black mascara on your upper/lower lashes.  Put two coats of the Arlecchino color Roulette Gloss on your lips. Next roll the Ciao Ciao fragrance on your wrists and neck and you’re good to go!

CL Loves Coola’s Organic Suncare Collection

Since I’ve begun my healthy skincare journey my bathroom countertop is filled with an assortment of drugstore and high-end products, which promise to smooth my skin, protect it from the sun, and keep it hydrated. I was convinced I couldn’t find a product that would help my dry skin, prevent the occasional breakouts, and be healthy for the environment at the same time. Then I found Coola: Organic Suncare Collection!

Their new collection of fabulous Environmental Repair Plus products features the Clear Recovery Foam Wash ($26), Fresh Relief Face Serum ($68), and Calm Glow Eye Gel ($56).

What I Love: I used Coola’s Clear Recovery Foam Wash twice a day for three weeks and every time my face felt refreshed and toned. The lavender scent was invigorating and the foam is gentle and lightweight. Next, the Fresh Face Serum is the perfect moisturizer! Seriously, usually after I moisturize I am left with unappealing small white flakes on my face after 10 minutes (my skin is that dry). However, Coola’s face serum leaves my skin firm without feeling tight and a little goes a long way. My mother instilled in me very early to start protecting the area around my eyes and I always put some sort of eye cream on. When I tried the Calm Glow Eye Gel, I noticed it helped reduce the puffiness around my eyes as a result from all the late nights up studying and I liked it was oil-free.

It’s Green: Coola makes all their products without  Paba, Paraben, Petroleum or Phthalate. They blend natural ingredients such as Japenese Seaweed, Willow Bark, Radish Root, Rose Flower Water, and Alfalfa Extract to protect the skin. Many of their products contain SPF also. These hypoallergenic products are enriched with vitamins, nutrients, and age-defying antioxidants. I just can’t get enough of this line. I feel like my pores are open and I can travel to a warm or cold climate without having to change my skincare routine (I just traveled to Texas, this is a fact :) ).

The products are a tad pricey but ladies this is an investment in clear glowing skin. Think about how much money you spend a year on trying out new products that you end up throwing out because they fail to meet your skincare needs. It’s rare to find a line like Coola and when you do, don’t let it pass you by.

I’ll be updating my skincare progress in one month and will be previewing Coola’s Mineral Sunscreen to help you gear up for summer!

Disclosure: A special thanks to Behrman Communications for sending College Lifestyles the Coola Environmental Repair Plus Line to help facilitate this review.

Award Winning Actress Erica Hubbard Chats with CL!

Chicago native Erica Hubbard is one of the most versatile, educated, and charismatic entertainers of today’s generation. Perhaps you’ve seen her star in ABC Family’s hit show “Lincoln Heights” playing the lead role of Cassie Sutton for four seasons. Or see her weekly as the outgoing Kita Whitmore on BET’s “Let’s Stay Together.” Her resume speaks volumes having been in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Save the Last Dance, and A Cinderella Story. Erica proves that beauty and brains isn’t just a statement, she graduated college in just three years and has appeared in numerous magazines. Erica gave College Lifestyles the scoop on how to become a serious actress, what her day is like, and her fashion tips.

CL: You graduated from Columbia College in Chicago. How do you think pursuing a higher education has helped your career?

Pursuing a higher career and earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree has helped my career tremendously.  From attending a four-year college I have a learned behavior of being detailed oriented, keen on time management, and disciplined enough to finish any task at hand.  Attending Columbia College in Chicago has taught me professional skills that I didn’t have to learn on a job.  I love to seek different opportunities and going through college it becomes habitual to study and research so you are made aware of how to maneuver through any profession educationally.

CL: What activities were you involved in when you were in college?

I formed the first Film and Television Organization, I was in CCABJ (Columbia College Association of Broadcast Journalism), I also wrote for the Theater Department Newsletter as well as our Dormitory Newsletter and I was on CCEN (Columbia College Electronic Newsletter).  While I was in college I also had a paid internship at an advertising company and was in the work-aid program working in the Dean’s Office. Moreover, I hosted a children’s television show for a local network in Chicago. I do not like to sit idle. I love to work and stay busy!

CL: As an actress you attend red carpet events, appearances, and award shows. What are your tips to co-eds who want to look professional, stylish, and fashion forward?

I am not afraid to ask for constructive criticism before I attend any event.  I like to hire a team of working professionals in the entertainment industry who can advise on my hair, make-up, and wardrobe styling. I would suggest that everyone center themselves around the best and the brightest in their specific profession.  Choosing a professional-working mentor who works in your same occupation can also help guide you and propel your career.

CL: Have you always wanted to be an actress? Do you have a few tips for students who would like to pursue a career in the entertainment industry?

I have always wanted to be an actress since I was nine years old.  Acting has always been a true passion of mine!  A major tip for anyone who wants to pursue a career in the entertainment industry is to read books written about the profession. Some might include Respect for Acting (Uta Hagen), Audition (Michael Shurtleff) and No Acting Please (Eric Morris & Joan Hotchkis). Also, I recommend that the student take classes and train on stage in a play as well. Next, make sure you get a great agent, and when you have a list of great credits get a manager on your team.  Lastly, try to get in all three unions for actors: EQUITY, SAG and AFTRA.

CL: What is your typical day like on the set of “Let’s Stay Together”?

My typical day on the set of Let’s Stay Together consist of waking up for an early call-time in which we all usually begin our day around 6 am, we go to hair and make-up, get dressed in our wardrobe, we eat breakfast, we find-out if we have notes or need new sides (if the dialogue has been changed or more has been added), the cast runs lines together, then we go over our blocking (we learned in rehearsals the day before filming), some of us stand-in for our own lighting, then we tape, we break for lunch, then we get touched-up for hair and make-up, run more lines for our scenes, shoot some more coverage if not completed, then film other scenes, after we get our lighting done.  Then, depending on if we shot all our pages that day we usually wrap at night around 8 pm or later.  Predominately each day is a 13-hour day or more.

CL: What type of other roles do you hope to pursue in the future?

In the future I think I would be interested in all different types of genres and roles.  While in school, the Chairman of our Theater Department (Sheldon Patikin-from Second City and Steppenwolf in Chicago) trained and challenged us to take on a variety of roles. With the vast amount of body movements, vocal techniques, and stage skills we learned, I feel that I can portray anything from a lead in a romance story to an action hero.

Blogging Socialite: CL Interviews the Jasmine Brand

While we are sound asleep, Jasmine  is busy working on her acclaimed entertainment and lifestyle blog theJASMINE.BRAND. Writing from the Nation’s Capital, Jasmine is one of the most authentic and truthful leaders in the celebrity blogging arena. It’s rare today to find stories about the Obama’s vacation and Kim Kardashian’s business wardrobe on the same website, but Jasmine accomplishes it. She is the epitome of ‘keeping it classy’ and is a master multi-tasker. Jasmine gave College Lifestyles her exclusive tips on how to break into the industry, what radio life is like, and the latest fashion scoop.

CL: What sets theJASMINEBRAND apart from other celebrity/lifestyle blogs and websites out there today?

TJB: I practice responsible blogging, meaning I’m particular about what I report, where the information came from, my own sources, etc. I don’t take credit for others work and source as much as I can. I have a unique perspective and corny sense of humor that my readers get (thankfully). I also try not to shove my opinion down my readers throat because they’re bright and see things much different from me (lots of times) and I appreciate that. Besides, people don’t come to the Jasmine Brand to get my two cents, they come to get celebrity news (in an entertaining, yet polite way-I hope) and decide on their own if they’re a fan or not of what’s being discussed. And believe me, they are very vocal and I LOVE it!

CL: You have a unique and bold style (which College Lifestyles absolutely loves!). What are some affordable designers or stores that you like, where co-eds can snag the latest fashions? Do you follow any trends?

TJB: This is a tough one because I kind of do my own weird thing with my style. I like putting things together that really aren’t supposed to exist at one time. I’m not really a label girl (although I have a few things here and there). I like everything from Target, Neiman’s, Zara’s, Urban Outfitters (I like their rompers), American Apparel and yes, Forever 21. Trends? I try to stay away from them, because they’re hard to keep up with. I have an obsession with earrings and nail polish. The bigger the earring, the better. Nail polish is so cool, in general. If I was to die and had to come back as an object—POLISH all day! (P.S. I was gonna say a condom as a second option but that was a joke…like seriously.)

CL: We love your motto “You Sleep. I Blog.” Since you have to stay connected, how many tech gadgets do use everyday? What device(s) can you not live without?

TJB: I really only have two phones (I lost one) and a laptop. I can NOT live without my laptop. It’s like my boyfriend and sleeps w/ me every night. Like literally, it’s in bed with me while I sleep, hence me sleeping at weird times.

CL: Your work gives you amazing opportunities to interview celebrities on the red carpet at award shows and album release signings, host events in Washington, D.C., and meet/greet some of the most influential people in the industry. Could you give any tips or advice to journalism or communications students who aspire to have a career like yours?

TJB: I would say, think about the ‘why’ in terms of why you’d like to do this. It can be a thank-less job, so you want to make sure your heart is in the right place. Trust your instincts. Trust your gut. Work on your writing non-stop. Don’t be afraid to have your own ‘voice’ when you write. If you’re interested in interviewing celebrities, be over-prepared with what you know about them and what you want to ask. Be confident and remember they’re regular people and aren’t as fascinating when you actually meet them. Believe me, you’re probably more interesting than they are LOL.

CL: Do you ever get nervous or shy when interviewing certain celebrities?

TJB: I do get nervous and more so because I’m thinking, “Crap, what if they read something that I said about them that wasn’t the most positive.” I also get nervous because you usually have a short period of time to ask a gazillion questions that you want to get answered. Oftentimes, you’ll be interviewing them in a room-full of people, with their handlers kind of standing around (making sure you don’t ask them anything crazy) in the most awkward times. Maybe you catch them right after they’ve gone on stage, or while they’re shopping (if it’s a phone interview). One rapper, who shall remain nameless, lit a blunt while I interviewed him. So you have to just be flexible and roll with it (no pun intended).

CL: You are also a radio host for Elite DC Radio and speak at area conferences/events. How do you manage to juggle such a busy schedule?

TJB: I do short celebrity segments for Elite DC Radio, which is easier for my schedule, but overall, I have no idea, really! I get up early, prioritize, make a list and just kind of go for it. I really believe in only one speed, “Go!”

CL: Could you give us a glimpse of what your typical day is like?

TJB: It isn’t that exciting really. I get up by let’s say 4 or 5 a.m., hop online check emails, see what I missed while I was sleeping. I listen to a ton of radio and TV in the morning and some music while I get my morning content up. I talk to my best friend every morning, for like 5 minutes (boring, right?) and kind of work non-stop until 10a or so. My team checks in with me via email in the morning (or text message if they can’t get in touch with me). I handle some of the business end of the Jasmine Brand after 11 a.m. I see what’s on TV, sort of make my schedule for the rest of the day. I do celebrity interviews in the afternoon, so I’ll usually prep for those. I usually eat in between stuff. Once a week, I’ll make myself go somewhere during the day like the movies or I’ll take a lunch meeting. I usually have like two calls a day, but I won’t schedule anything more than that. I break in the evenings for a bit and take a nap and get back up around 9 p.m. or so. Long story short, I work all day :-) But it’s fun and I absolutely love it.

CL: Where do you see theJASMINEBRAND in five years?

TJB: I’m superstitious, so I don’t really want to say. I have some things in the works now, but just expect to see more of me…outside of DC :)

Superstar Student: CL Interview’s Ariana Pierce creator of Hollywood’s Hottest Nail Line

It’s pretty incredible when Hollywood stars like Lauren Conrad, Eva Longoria, and Selena Gomez are wearing your products and you haven’t even graduated college yet. Michigan State University senior, Ariana Pierce, is the creator of the eco-friendly Superstar Nail Lacquer, an actress, author, blogger, and motivational speaker for young adults. Her nail polish line has been featured in Glamour Magazine, on B.E.T., and InStyle Magazine. Ari’s first company The Billion Heir Club, is a website where young ladies can gain insight on how to be successful and also includes a t-shirt and jewelry line. This business student has been able to take small ideas (f.y.i Ari created her nail line after wanted a nail polish to dry quickly so she could make it to class on time) and turn them into revenue making successes. How was Ariana able to run two businesses, write six books, and attend college full-time? College Lifestyles has the answers for you!

CL: You are a businesswoman, author, actress, national speaker, and full-time student at Michigan State University. How do you manage it all? Is there any advice/tips that you could give to co-eds who need to organize a busy schedule?

AP: I manage my business and school career by planning everything. I live by my calendar and agenda. School is very important to me, so I make sure to complete my schoolwork during the week so I can travel, speak, and do my business on the weekends. My advice to those dealing with a busy schedule is to write things down, keep an agenda, and plan ahead so you are never caught off guard.

CL: In a radio interview you called “Superstar Nail Lacquer”, your nail polish line, “a fashionable company.” What are some current nail trends for the winter and spring season? How can we choose nail polishes that compliment our outfit without being too matchy-matchy?

AP: Some current nail trends that are hot for the season are the stiletto nails. The have been spotted on celebs like Rihanna. I recently launched a nail line called Superstar U. It is a line of polish with colors supporting various college sports teams. We are currently in basketball season, so girls are rocking their teams colors. Mine would be Go Green for Michigan State. These colors can be found at styleshoppe.com.

The key to choosing a polish that compliments your outfit without being too matchy is finding a color that goes with your overall color scheme. I wear a lot of neutrals, so colors like black, gray, blue, orange look great. I like to switch it up and be creative. So I will wear a bright pink also. I really don’t worry too much about what I’m going to wear, I just somehow make the polish and outfit work.

CL: Online you’re known as ‘Ari the Heiress’, and regularly update your blog. How can college girls create a positive social media image, web site, and blog?

AP: Girls can create a positive social media image by being positive in their postings. When you post negative things, you are going to attract negative results. If you want to be respected, you have to put out information that is respectable.

CL: In your audio book, 30 Days to Making It!, you give people tips on how to kick-start their passions into reality. Could you share with College Lifestyles a few tips on how you became such a young success?

AP: I decided in my mind that I wanted to be a success. I knew that it would take hard work, especially with me being in school, but I was determined. I also followed other successful people in my industry. Mentors are so important because they help guide you in the right direction. Even if you don’t know anyone personally that is successful in your field, find a mentor by reading books. My mother always says successful people leave clues! Because not everyone has a personal mentor I was inspired to create the 30 Days To Making It Kit to answer questions and give personal advice on succeeding in your business and career. It can be found on my site at arianapierce.com.

CL: Do you have any new projects in the works that we should look out for?

AP: My mom and I host a business conference every year. I love sharing business and success advice with other young people. The conference will be held in Orlando, FL July 12-14. This conference is life changing and I would love to see everyone there! More info will be posted on my site at arianapierce.com.

Q & A with YouTube Sensation Alyssa Bernal

Who knew a MySpace message could change a person’s life? Well just ask Alyssa Bernal, who was contacted by N.E.R.D. front man Pharrell Williams,  who saw her singing talents on YouTube. One year later the Texas teenager was signed to Star Trak Entertainment and recording her first album. When Alyssa was younger she used to be shy to sing in front of others, now with over five million views on singing covers from Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Adele, it’s no question that Alyssa brings new light and energy to the pop scene.  The songs on her album, Love Hangover, “are about long-distance love, missing home, and the tone is very easy-going”, says Alyssa. College Lifestyles had the opportunity to ask Alyssa a few questions, check them out here!

CL: What type of impact has social media (Youtube, Twitter, Facebook) had on your career and how you connect with your fans?

AB: Social media has made it possible for me to keep my fans updated with whatever is going on with my career. Thanks to social media I am able to figure out where most of my fan base is located so that I can go on a tour there and have a successful outcome.

CL: How would you describe your fashion style? Do you follow any trends?

AB: I lean towards boho looking clothes. Vanessa Hudgens has an amazing sense of fashion.

CL: You receive a lot of your views when you cover songs from hit artists. Who is your dream person to collaborate with?

AB: I would love to co-write a song with Taylor Swift. I’m a huge fan of her music and I love that we’re the same age and play guitar and are songwriters.

CL: We love your video “Cali Cali Cali”! what is your typical day like on a video shoot?

AB: Thanks! Basically, lots of makeup touch-ups and taking direction from the director. It also involves a little bit of acting.

CL: Do you have any advice for young singers/songwriters who desire to break into the industry?

AB: Never try and be like someone else. And social media does not hurt to try. And write your own songs!

CL: Do you have any upcoming projects you would like to share with College Lifestyles?

AB: I’m getting ready to go to Miami to record my second album. So excited about that!
