4 Tips for Moving Back In with Your Parents
April 16, 2012 by RachelO
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Etiquette, Indiana University
One of the best parts of going away to college is the freedom of living on your own. Your parents aren’t around to give you a curfew, ask you to wash the dishes or make you walk the dog. It’s nice to not have to answer to mom and dad, but this freedom may not last forever! As summer and graduation nears, many co-eds will be forced to move back home. If you will spend the summer sleeping in your childhood bedroom, follow these tips to make sure you and the ‘rents have a smooth transition.
Clean up after yourself
Part of being an adult is cleaning up after yourself. It is no longer mom’s responsibility to pick up your dirty clothes!
Establish a plan for when you go out
A great part about moving home is hanging out with friends you don’t see while at school. Depending on your parents, you may or may not have a curfew when you move back home. If you do have a curfew, be sure to respect it and come home when your parents ask. If you don’t have a curfew, it is still considerate to let your parents know where you are going and when you will return. Even though you’re no longer in high school, mom and dad still worry!
Contribute to household chores
When living at home, it is important to be a contributive family member and not just a lump on the couch. Show your parents how much you appreciate them by helping out around the house. A great way to help is by cooking meals. Need ideas for some tasty recipes? Check out what our interns are cooking in our Intern Kitchen!
Have fun!
One of the best things about living at home is seeing your parents everyday. Believe it or not, mom and dad can have fun too! Take this opportunity to hang out and strengthen your bond with your parents. Find an activity you all enjoy and make it a fun family outing!
Although moving back in with your parents can seem like a disaster waiting to happen, it doesn’t have to be! Follow these tips and you can have a great summer and beyond with mom and dad. You may even wonder why you ever moved out in the first place!

Classy Co-eds Spill: How I Got Over A Guy
March 30, 2012 by RachelO

There’s no denying relationships are a big part of the college experience. As a classy co-ed, you’ve probably had to get over a guy at some point in college. Whether you ended a long-term relationship or got rejected by your crush, moving on is hard! To help all the girls who’ve had a hard time getting over a guy, I asked some co-eds who’ve successfully moved on just how they did it and got their best advice so you can move on! Here are their words of wisdom:
“I talked to a lot of friends about my break-up and watched several romantic comedies like 10 Things I Hate About You and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Eventually I realized that other guys are so much better.” Kim, 19
“I read the Twilight series…reading helped me escape from reality for a little while. Then I met new boys.” Sarah, 21
“I took me awhile, but once I dated someone else, I realized not all guys are like my ex. There are a lot of good guys out there who treat girls with respect.” Katie, 19
“I needed to completely erase him from my life for at least a few months. I boxed up everything he gave me and everything that reminded me of him and hid it so I didn’t have to constantly see it. I also deleted him from Facebook and my phone. I know it sounds extreme, but this is what I needed to do to get over him.” Emily, 20
“I tried to keep myself busy and joined a new club. It was a great way to occupy my time and meet new friends as well! I would recommend joining a club or activity that makes you feel good and gives you independence.” Lindsay, 21
“I talked to my friends about him a lot. They helped cheer me up and told me to look at all of the positives and reminded me of all the negativity my relationship brought to my life. Also, my relationship took up so much of my time that I began to ignore friendships. When my relationship ended, I was so thankful that my friends were still there for me. I spent a lot of time rebuilding those friendships I had ignored. You may love your boyfriend, but don’t forget about your friends because they will be there no matter what.” Elizabeth, 20
As you can see, there are many ways to get over a guy! However, it is important to remember that it doesn’t happen over night. Give it time, follow these girls’ advice, and you will eventually move on! If you’ve successfully gotten over a guy, be sure to share your secrets with CL in the comments below!

The CL Guide to College Admissions Tests
March 5, 2012 by RachelO
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, College Prep, College Tips, Indiana University, Motivational Monday
Hello future classy co-eds! As you prepare your list of colleges to apply to, it is very important to look at the testing requirements for each school. Some schools do not require any standardized tests, but many require either the SAT or the ACT and some even require SAT Subject Tests! These tests can become confusing, but fear not! CL is here to answer all of your questions! Here is a breakdown of each test:
SAT
The SAT tests your knowledge in writing, mathematics, and critical reading and lasts three hours and forty-five minutes. The cost to take the test is $49 and you can take it as many times as you want. There are also fee waivers available to help pay for the test if you cannot afford it.
All of the questions on the SAT are multiple-choice with the exception of a few math problems and the essay section. The SAT is offered in January, March, May, June, October, November, and December. Scores take 3-6 weeks to process and you can view them online or get them by mail. Each of the three SAT sections is graded on an 800-point scale, so the highest possible score is 2400. Most colleges and universities release the median scores for students they admit and this is a great way to see if your score will be competitive in admissions.
There are many resources to help students prepare for the SAT. The most helpful study resource is The Official SAT Study Guide. The book clearly explains each section of the test and has sample questions with detailed solutions as well as 10 full practice exams. It can be purchased at bookstores or online book retailers like Amazon where is currently costs only $12.99!
For more information on the SAT and to sign up, go to collegeboard.org.
ACT
The ACT is the other college placement exam and is the SAT’s biggest competitor. It has four multiple-choice sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. There is also an optional writing section, although it is not required. Each section is scored on a scale from 1-36 and the four scores are averaged into one composite score, with 36 being the highest. The ACT without writing costs $34 and the ACT with writing costs $49.50, but fee waivers are available to those who qualify.
Although the number of times the ACT is offered per year varies by state, it is generally offered in February, April, June, September, October, and December. The ACT lasts a little under three hours, but goes a bit longer if you take the optional writing part. In addition to SAT scores, most colleges release median ACT scores of admitted students. Use this information to see how your score compares to other students the college admitted!
The Real ACT Prep Guide is a book written by the same company that writes the test and is a great study resource. Many other test prep companies also have ACT prep guides with practice tests and sample questions. Take advantage of these study guides to get familiarized with the test and get your best score possible!
For more information on the ACT and to sign up, go to actstudent.org.
SAT Subject Tests
Although not as popular as the SAT and the ACT, many colleges also require one or more SAT
Subject Tests. It is very important to see the individual requirements for every school you apply to. The SAT Subject Tests are available in 20 subjects including literature, history, the sciences, mathematics, and multiple foreign languages. You can take up to the three subject tests in one day and they are offered on the same days as the traditional SAT. The cost is $22 plus $11 per test and each test lasts one hour. The single subject tests are graded on an 800-point scale and there is an official study guide book for each subject test published by the College Board.
For more information on the SAT Subject Tests and to sign up, go to collegeboard.org.
I hope this helped clear up some confusion about college admissions testing! Remember to look up the testing requirements for each college you apply to and ask CL if you have any questions! Also be sure to check out the other articles in our College Prep section! Good luck studying!
Rachel Osman is a sophomore at Indiana University studying journalism. She took the SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject Tests in high school, so don’t be afraid to ask her any questions you may have about any of the tests!

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
February 11, 2012 by RachelO
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Indiana University, Relationships, The Dish
Dating is a big part of the college experience. We all talk about dates, relationships, and hook-ups with our friends. However, a big trend we often ignore in college is dating violence.
Statistics about dating violence in college are much higher than one would expect. More than 1/5 of college women have reported physical abuse, sexual abuse, or threats of physical violence from a significant other. Sadly, the dating violence is not only affecting college girls, but also those in high school. Nearly 1.5 million high school students experience physical abuse from a dating partner every year.
In order to raise awareness on abuse in teen and 20-something relationships, February has been declared Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Schools, students, community organizations and government leaders are coming together this month to educate young people on relationships and dating abuse.
The Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month website (www.teendvmonth.org) has a wealth of information on both how to spot signs of violence and how to get help. The website identifies the following as the top ten warning signs of dating abuse:
- Checking your cell phone and email without permission
- Constantly putting you down
- Extreme jealousy or insecurity
- Explosive temper
- Isolating you from family or friends
- Making false accusations
- Mood swings
- Physically hurting you in any way
- Possessiveness
- Telling you what to do
As college and high school women, it is important we take care of each other and ourselves. There are many ways to get help If you or a friend is experiencing dating violence. Here are a few suggestions:
- Many colleges and high schools offer counseling services for students. Talk to a counselor or another trusted adult.
- Another great resource is www.loveisrespect.org, a website that offers information about all aspects of dating violence featuring a 24/7 chat, phone and text service for those wishing to get help.
As classy, intelligent co-eds, remember dating violence is never acceptable. It is essential we work together to stop this epidemic and keep everyone safe. If you wish to learn more about dating violence and how to prevent it, visit www.teendvmonth.org or www.loveisrespect.org.

CL’s Guide to Finding an Internship!
January 27, 2012 by RachelO
Filed under Ask the Intern, Career Tips, Careers, CL ExCLusives!, Indiana University, Internship Tips, Professionalism, What We Love
As a classy co-ed, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the internship speech a hundred times over. Parents and professors are constantly telling us the importance of finding an internship in college. While these speeches can get repetitive, they do have a point. Internships are the best way to get experience in a field you are interested in. And while they look great on a resume, they also teach you how to be a good employee, manage your time, and be a go-getter. The process of internship hunting can be a daunting task, but fear not, co-eds! CL is here to help you every step of the way!
To help you begin your search, here are CL’s suggestions on where to look for internships:
1. Your school’s career center: This suggestion may be obvious, but you’d be surprised how many co-eds never set foot in their school’s career center! Career centers exist for the sole purpose of helping students find internships and jobs, so take advantage! Meet with a career counselor and discuss your future plans. In addition to helping you find an internship, a counselor can help you with resume and cover letter writing and even set up mock-interviews for you to practice before you do the real thing! Many career centers also have online job boards where they post internship opportunities for students. Be sure to see if your school has one!
2. Internqueen.com- Intern Queen Lauren Berger had 15(!) internships in college. She now runs her own website that helps college students find internships. Her website features internship postings from all over the country and a variety of fields. She also wrote a book that gives advice on everything related to internships. Check out CL’s review of her book “All Work, No Pay”.
3. Internships.com- This website features internships from all geographic areas and disciplines. You can type in fields that interest you and your location and the site will give you internships that match your criteria.
4. SimplyHired.com-This awesome site also allows you to search by geographic area, field, or even company. You can also get daily e-mail alerts when internships that match your criteria are posted.
5. Career Fairs- Does your school have any career fairs this semester? If so, go to them! Put on your best professional outfit, print copies of your resume and go impress those company representatives!
6. Networking- As a classy co-ed, you are sure to learn the importance of networking if you haven’t already! Network with your professors, friends, family, and anyone else you can think of! Does your dad have a friend who works at a company you are interested in? Ask him to introduce you! Another great group of people to network with is your school alumni! Seek out alumni who work in your chosen field and ask them for advice. They went to your school, so you already have something in common! Also, most alums love to help kind, ambitious students in any way they can.
7. The CL Internship and Job Bank- That’s right, College Lifestyles is now also a great place to look for internships and jobs! The CL Job Bank will be up and running by the end of February. It will contain positions for all disciplines. Be sure to check back next month to see if there are any positions you are interested in!
I hope these resources help you in your internship hunt! Find opportunities that catch your eye, then go wow those potential employers! Don’t be afraid to apply for positions that are known to be competitive. Put your best foot forward and always remember, you are amazing!

Hello, classy co-eds! For those of you who didn’t know, last night marked the start of awards season as all of the stars from this year’s best television shows and movies walked the red carpet at the Golden Globes! And we all know that one of the best parts of award shows is obsessing about all of the amazing gowns and jewelry! Overall, the attendees look glamorous and stylish, although there were a few that could have looked better. Here are CL’s favorite and least favorite looks from the night!
Reese Witherspoon looked absolutely amazing in her red Zac Posen gown!
Paula Patton shined in her bright yellow Monique Lhuillier mermaid gown!
Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara looked stunning in her dramatic Vera Wang gown. She accessorized with $5 million worth of diamonds!
Golden Globe winner Claire Danes brought a little something different in her black and white J. Mendel gown.
Actress Shailene Woodley, who was nominated for her supporting role in The Descendants, shimmered in a floor-length Marchesa gown.
Golden Globes presenter Jessica Alba looked beautiful in her Gucci gown.
Charlize Theron looked daring in her plunging Dior Haute Couture gown.
Emma Stone looked fashion forward in her belted maroon Lanvin dress.
And now, a few of our least favorites:
Sarah Michelle Gellar let her two-year-old daughter pick out her gown. While the gesture was sweet, she didn’t look her best in this Monique Lhuillier gown.
New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel looked a bit dated in this custom Prada gown that had too much going on, especially around the neckline.
So co-eds, what do you think of our list? Did you have other favorites or least favorites that we didn’t mention? (There were so many good options!) And what were your favorite fashion and beauty trends from the night? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Project Runway All Stars Episode 2 Recap
January 13, 2012 by RachelO
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Entertainment, Fashion, Indiana University, The Dish, TV
Hello, classy co-eds! For those of you who missed last night’s glamorous episode of Project Runway All Stars, here is a rundown of what happened!
The twelve remaining designers were challenged to create a gorgeous evening gown for a night at the opera. While some designers were excited to create a show-stopping gown, others were not as enthused. All of the designers agreed Austin Scarlett was the one to beat because of his incredible talent when it comes to evening wear.
While the designers were given $350 to purchase fabrics for the gowns, they were only given one day to put it together. Because of this time constraint, many designers were forced to alter their original designs so they could finish in time.
In the end, all of the designers finished their gowns and sent their beautiful models down the runway! The judging panel, including guest judges Mark Badgley and James Mischka of Badgley Mischka, were left stunned by a few of the dresses and were not so impressed with others.
Austin Scarlett a.k.a. “King of Couture” lived up to his nickname and won the challenge with this gown:
Michael Costello came in a close second with this black showstopper:
Anthony Williams came in third with this white gown:
The judges were not impressed with this gown made by Kara Janx:
Although the judges praised April for using something besides black, they were not fans of this red number, which put her in the bottom two.
The judges felt this dress, made by Sweet P, was more appropriate for a high school prom than a night at the opera. Sweet P was eliminated for this look.
So, co-eds, what did you think? Did you agree with the judges’ decisions, or would you have made different choices? Let CL know in the comments below! Also, be sure to check out the CL re-cap of One Tree Hill. Finally, if there are any shows that you would like us to re-cap each week, let us know!

Project Runway Returns with All Star Edition!
January 10, 2012 by RachelO
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Entertainment, Fashion, Indiana University, The Dish, TV
For all of you fashion-loving co-eds out there who are Project Runway fans, you are in luck because Project Runway All Stars premiered Thursday on Lifetime! Thirteen talented designers from the first eight seasons of the show returned for their second attempt at the crown.
Because All Stars is a spin-off the original Project Runway, there are new judges, a new host, and a new mentor. The new host is the beautiful supermodel Angela Lindvall. She is joined on the judging panel by designer Isaac Mizrahi and designer Georgina Chapman, one of the co-founders of Marchesa. Finally, Joanna Coles, the Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire, is mentoring the designers.
In the first episode, all of the designers returned with their usual talent and flair. The first challenge required them to make an outfit out of materials purchased from the dollar store. As usual, there were some strong creations and some that were not so good.
Season 4 runner-up Rami Kashou (Shelly’s favorite!) won the challenge with this outfit made from shopping bags and an umbrella.
One of the judges’ favorite looks was this dress made out of scarves and placemats by Season 5’s Jerell Scott.
Another judge favorite was Season 8 runner-up Mondo Guerra. He made this outfit out of binders, trash bags and tape.
The first designer that was sent home was Season 4 contestant Elisa Jimenez, who made this look out of shower curtains and paint.
Judging from the first episode, it is easy to tell that we are in for a season full of drama, creativity, and beautiful clothes. I can’t wait to see what the designers come up with next!
Who are you rooting for this season? And do you like the new judges and mentor, or do you miss Heidi, Nina, Michael, and Tim? Let CL know in the comments below!
