CL’s Guide to College Graduation

Graduation has come for so many of us! Having just gone through, I can tell you it is an experience you will never forget. If you’re considering not walking, I highly encourage you to do so. You’ve worked so hard and come so far, so celebrate it! Here are some tips on how to prepare for the big day, and what comes next!
Make sure everything is in order. Moving out? Double check that you have EVERYTHING. Still have some library books? Make sure to return them. Parking ticket? Pay it off!
Send out invitations. Invite family and friends! This is a time to celebrate! Send out invites to commencement, diploma ceremonies, graduation parties, etc. with the dates, times and locations clearly written.
Spend time with college friends. You may not see them for a while (but not ever again!). Have fun, relax, and figure out how you would like to stay in touch, whether it is through letters, email, texting, annual reunions, LinkedIn or Facebook.
Plan your outfit. You want to look your best for the occasion, so dress in style – it’s your day! With warmer months coming (and the amount of people likely to be filling the room at your graduation) wear something light and summery, but formal. Also, plan to wear comfy shoes, as you could be standing for quite a while.
CL Quick Tip: Consider decorating your mortar board so your folks can find you in the crowd.
Plan your make-up and hair. Again, with the summer months upon us, too much make-up will look fussy and could melt down your face. Try a lighter look. For hair, wear it down under you cap, but put it up when you can to keep cool. If your hair tends to frizz, be prepared with product.
Charge your camera. And make sure you have extra batteries! Take as many pictures as you, and have you family take pictures, too, can so you can add them to a scrapbook later.
Mingle and network. Colleges sometimes have receptions after graduation, so use it as an opportunity to speak with professors and advisors, thanking them for their guidance and support and asking them to remember you when career opportunities in your field pop up.
Send thank you emails or cards. We all have favorite professors, mentors, advisors and supervisors. Let them know how much they mean to you and the impact they have had on your college life.
Look for a job. If you haven’t started looking, or haven’t found one yet, search, search, search! Make sure your resume is up to date and apply like crazy, and keep track of when and where you apply. Some good places to start are the College Lifestyles job bank, careerbuilder.com and LinkedIn.
Be proud! You’ve earned this. Congratulations! This is a big step, but you can do it!

The Royal Wedding: One Year Later
May 3, 2012 by DebraS
Filed under Celebs & Entertainment, CL ExCLusives!, CL on your Campus, Duquesne University, Lifestyle
It’s hard to believe that just last year on April 29 Prince William and Kate Middleton became man and wife. Immediately after their engagement the couple took the world by storm with their seemingly laid-back and down to earth attitudes. The royal wedding went beautifully, and Kate has since settled into her role as Duchess of Cambridge with a simple elegance, friendly smile, and killer wardrobe. So CL wanted to know, what were your fond memories of this superstar event, and what’s next?
What was your favorite moment of William and Kate’s royal nuptials?
“The one thing I will always remember is the first screen shot of her stepping out of the palace and into the car in her dress. I think that was the moment me and my sleepless friends started crying.” – Jessica Fecteau, Central Michigan University, Journalism.
“When he looked at her and whispered ‘You look beautiful’” – Shelly Marie Redmond, Founder/CEO College Lifestyles
“Didn’t watch the wedding.” – Devin Rigot, Saint Vincent College, Elementary Education
“My favorite moment is when William whispers to Kate that she looks beautiful. I immediately began to cry!” – Alycia Washington, Duquesne University, Advertising and Public Relations.
What do you think the newlyweds are up to for their first anniversary?
“I think they are spending it in solitude! And hopefully planning a baby prince!” – Jessica Fecteau, Central Michigan University, Journalism.
“Hopefully enjoying time together outside of the spotlight.” – Devin Rigot, Saint Vincent College, Elementary Education
“I think for the first year of being married, they are still just getting to know each other and having fun. They are still newlywed to me.” – Alycia Washington, Duquesne University, Advertising and Public Relations.
If you could send a card to William and Kate for their anniversary, what would it say?
“You are a beautiful couple! Please stay together forever!” – Jessica Fecteau, Central Michigan University, Journalism.
“No idea, I would probably wish them luck trying to make a relationship survive under so much pressure… it has got to be hard!” – Devin Rigot, Saint Vincent College, Elementary Education
“I am not sure what I would say in the card except, ‘have a baby soon!’ and ‘say hi to Pippa and Harry for me.” – Alycia Washington, Duquesne University, Advertising and Public Relations.
Do you think it’s time for a little prince or princess to be on the way? Name ideas?
“OF COURSE! Girl: Isabella Boy:David (after their friend David Beckham).” – Jessica Fecteau, Central Michigan University, Journalism.
“YES! Let the middle name be Diana or Diane if a girl” –Shelly Marie Redmond, Founder/CEO College Lifestyles
“Sure why not!” – Devin Rigot, Saint Vincent College, Elementary Education
“I definitely think it is time for a lil one to appear. The media and their fans would eat that story alive. I think they should name the baby Diana Anastasia Louis, after Princess Diana.” – Alycia Washington, Duquesne University, Advertising and Public Relations.
How do you think Kate’s doing with her royal duties so far?
“I think she is keeping her head up and braving her new world. She seems to handle everything with grace and confidence.” - Jessica Fecteau, Central Michigan University, Journalism.
“She seems classy.” – Devin Rigot, Saint Vincent College, Elementary Education
“I’m sure Kate is doing great! If she wasn’t doing okay with her royal duties, I’m sure we’d hear about it from the queen.” – Alycia Washington, Duquesne University, Advertising and Public Relations.
What do you think of Kate’s fashion?
“Classy!” – Jessica Fecteau, Central Michigan University, Journalism.
“I think it is sophisticated and timeless.” – Devin Rigot, Saint Vincent College, Elementary Education
“Kate’s fashion is very approximate for the role that she is in; Prince William’s wife. She never wears revealing clothes but she stills looks great and I like that. I do think that people are hyping her fashion up just a little but she is royalty now.” – Alycia Washington, Duquesne University, Advertising and Public Relations.

While I am not actually Italian, my stomach thinks it is. I absolutely love the Olive Garden. Currently, my favorite dish there is the chicken flatbread. So, improvising, I attempted to recreate it. The results were delicious.

- 1 container Alfredo sauce
- Grilled chicken, thinly sliced
- Basil, thinly chopped
- Red pepper, thinly sliced
Procedure:
- Grill chicken, but not too crispy.
- Heat Alfredo sauce until warm.
- Pour over Pillsbury pizza crust.
- Put chicken, basil and red pepper on top.
- Heat in oven according to Pillsbury pizza crust instructions.
- Enjoy!

CL Interviews Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler, Part II
April 13, 2012 by DebraS
Filed under Celebs & Entertainment, CL ExCLusives!, CL on your Campus, Duquesne University, Interviews, Lifestyle, Lifestyle Interviews, What We Love
Wrapping up her email interview with College Lifestyles, Miss America 2012 Laura Kaeppeler participated in a Q&A with questions of importance to classy co-eds like you, questions about the College Lifestyles Beauty by Confidence Campaign, and about where she sees herself next.
College Lifestyles: Time management is so important – how do you do it? Any tips?
Laura Kaeppeler: “The best way to conquer time management is to prioritize. Every day I make a list of the top 5 things I must get done in one day and as I complete a task, I cross it off my list.”
CL: College Lifestyles believes in classiness – how would you describe a classy lady?
LK: “When I think of classy women, I think of confidence, charm and elegance. I believe classy women are always aware of their surroundings and will portray themselves in the most positive way possible.”
CL: CL wants to help prepare girls for intern and job interviews. What are your do’s and dont’s?
LK: “I don’t believe there are any right “do’s” or “don’t” for a job interview. First and foremost it is important to academically prepare to the best of your ability but once the preparations have been completed, I believe the second most important aspect is to be yourself. Allow your true personality to shine through. Most people remember presentation, eye contact, presence and poise more than the actual words that come from your mouth. Don’t be afraid to crack a joke, either. After all, even an interviewer is human and likes to laugh every once in a while. J”
CL: College Lifestyles LOVES beauty and fashion. What are your must-haves for this season?
LK: “My fashion models the expression “less is more.” I like to emulate women like Grace Kelly or Kate Middleton who represent timeless and effortless beauty. This season you will see me wearing beautiful colors and patterns paired with classic staples that remain in style no matter the season.”
College Lifestyles started a movement called the Beauty By Confidence Campaign, which, “not only promotes good health, nutrition and lifestyle practices but also the power of confidence and positive thinking in today’s college lady.”
Finish this quote – I love my …. “Family, and dog, Smokey J”
CL: What do you love the most about yourself?
LK: “I have learned to love being vulnerable. Being open to both criticism and praise allows me to continuously grow as a young woman and rather than loving only one thing about myself, I am learning to love all that I have to offer and give in this life.”
CL: What makes you feel most confident?
LK: “Being prepared, and making a killer entrance. The best feeling is giving an incredible speech or presentation and receiving compliments afterwards. Positive feedback is what motivates me to continuously work harder to make the next speech, presentation or performance better than the last which in turn constantly provokes confidence.”
CL: Describe yourself in three words.
LK: “Empowered, compassionate and genuine.”
CL: What advice do you have for girls struggling with confidence and body image issues?
LK: “Having competed in the pageant world, I completely understand the pressure and stress to have the ‘perfect body.’ However, I will be the first to say, I in no way, shape or form have the perfect body. I am not a size 0, nor do I want to be. I have learned to be comfortable and confident in own skin, and comfortable and confident can come in all different shapes and sizes. The media portrays a negative view of what the ideal woman should look, walk and talk like, and I hope young women realize every person is made beautifully different and rather than all fit the mold of what the media portrays, we should embrace our unique body types. I believe true beauty shines from within.”
CL: How do you stay healthy?
LK: “Traveling 20,000 miles per month and living out of hotel rooms it is extremely difficult to maintain a workout regime or routine so I have to focus on nutrition. I look at food as fuel for my body. With an incredibly rigorous work schedule I know that I must fuel my body with the proper nutrients to maintain the stamina it needs to perform day in and day out. “
CL: Looking, ahead, where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years? Twenty years?
LK: “In five, ten and twenty years I hope to be happy, in whatever I find myself doing. My career ambition is to become an attorney so in the next five years I hope to be finishing law school. One day I hope to have children and a family of my own but I am one to not put a time limit on expectations for life because ‘life’ happens and plans will most likely change along the way. I believe God will steer my life in the direction He wants it to go and I will be most happy doing what I believe He has called me to do.”

CL Interviews Miss America 2012, Laura Kaeppeler, Part I
March 15, 2012 by DebraS

Laura Kaeppeler, 24, is a graduate of Carthage College, where she studied Music and Vocal Performance. Two years ago her friend Caitlin Gomez, who was Miss Kenosha at the time, suggested she give pageants a try. Kaeppeler the advice to heart and went on to win the Miss Kenosha title. She then placed second-runner up Miss Wisconsin, a title she eventually won and competed with in the Miss America Pageant. She was crowned Miss America 2012.
It’s no doubt that Kaeppeler’s singing talent gets her noticed at competitions - Gomez encourged Kaeppeler to enter because of it.
“She (Gomez) attended Carthage College with me and was in the music department with me and said, ‘You have a talent, you’re involved in your community, this seems like it would be a great fit for you,’” Kaeppeler said in her email interview. “I had no idea what I was doing or what the Miss America organization stood for. I just threw myself into the competition, but figured if I did well for not having much preparation time, I could perhaps compete the following year and win my state. That was just this past year, and here I am.”
If it was her talent that got her started, it is her philanthropy that keeps her going. Kaeppeler works with Circles of Support: Mentoring and Advocating for Children of Incarcerated Parents, a very personal cause.
“My father committed a white collar crime and was sentenced to one year in federal prison,” Kaeppeler said. “Having walked in the shoes of the children of incarcerated parents, I have first-hand experienced the emotions of pain, isolation, fear and guilt that are accompanied with having a parent in prison. As Miss America, I have a very large platform to discuss this topic at a national level, to raise awareness for the millions of children in our country who have a parent in prison, and to also encourage children who have a parent in prison to dream larger than life, and to believe those dreams can become a reality.”
As Miss America, Kaeppeler gets to speak about this issue around the country, attend charity events, and sing.
“I travel 20,000 miles per month and am in a different state almost every 72 hours” she said. “I can be found in a variety of different appearance venues such as speaking on my platform, visiting a Children’s Hospital as The National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network, working with our corporate sponsors, or singing in a performance venue.”
And when she’s not practicing her music or heading off to a new state?
“I am also a huge baseball fan and enjoy rooting for and attending Chicago Cubs’ games,” she said.
Check back next week for Part II, a Q&A that every college co-ed should read!

Keep the Spring Break Feeling all Semester Long!

If you’re headed off for spring break this week, don’t be disappointed when you come back to finish the semester off! You can still enjoy the rest of the school year even while you’re hitting the books.
Put up photos. No, not on Facebook. Get prints of some of your best photos and put them into frames, especially beach pictures if you have to go back to a cold place.
Incorporate spring themes into your wardrobe. Check out Shanae’s Colorful Jeans article and Morgan’s NY Fashion Week Looks for Less.
Eat fruit. There’s no better way to keep a beachy feeling than biting into an orange or strawberry!
Exercise. Take some time to go to the gym or go for a walk – working out will leave you feeling less stressed.
Get a mani-pedi. Try the colors suggested by CL Intern Sasha.
Stay in touch with friends from home. Make plans to see each other over Easter break, and keep one another updated on your lives while you’re at school. This is also a great time to start planning a spring brunch.
Start planning your summer vacation. Check out a few locations and cruise lines. It will keep your vacation appetite at bay.
Buy a new book. There’s nothing better than reading at the beach, but a dorm room will have to suffice for now. Try some of these CL readers’ recommendations you may have missed last semester and the CL Book Club reading “The Violets of March.”
Take a nap. After a long week of vacation time, your sleep schedule is probably a little bit off, especially if you were in a different time some. So, get your Z’s!
But don’t slack off! Keep up with your work – SUMMER IS ALMOST HERE!

1/4 cup fresh mint, chopped
1/4 cup flat leaf parsley, chopped
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)

Main Course: Roasted Garlic Pesto Cream Pasta by Rachael Ray

1 head garlic
1 tablespoon EVOO – Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Salt
1 pound whole wheat fettuccine
1 cup cream
1 cup basil leaves
1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves
1/4 cup pine nuts, toasted
1/2 cup chicken or vegetable stock
Ground black pepper
1/2 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese
“Yields: Serves 4
“Preparation
“Preheat oven to 400ºF.
“Slice 1/4-inch off the top of the garlic head, exposing the cloves. Place the garlic onto a square of aluminum foil and drizzle with about 1 tablespoon EVOO. Wrap the foil up around the garlic to enclose it and roast it in the oven until golden brown and very tender, about 40 minutes.
“When the garlic is ready, place a large pot of water over high heat for the pasta. When the water is boiling, salt it, drop in the pasta and cook to al dente according to package directions. Heads up: before draining the pasta, reserve a mugful of starchy cooking water, then drain and reserve the pasta.

Study Abroad: Spain
February 23, 2012 by DebraS
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, CL on your Campus, College Prep, College Tips, Duquesne University, Lifestyle, Study Abroad, Travel
Spain is a wonderful study abroad location whether you’re studying languages, architecture, history, or, in the case of this CL intern’s trip, religion. Here, CL Senior Writing Intern Debra takes you on a tour of Spain, via her experiences, with beautiful locations, places to visit, weather tips, and cuisine to taste.
Hello CL readers! I visited Spain my sophomore year with Duquesne University’s Global and Cultural Perspectives class. Our assignment was to learn about the rich history of Spanish religion, which includes Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
We covered a lot of ground in just ten days, visiting Madrid, Córdoba, Granada and Málaga. These last three places, located in Andalucía (Southern Spain), were where we spent the bulk of our time.
For those of you who have studied Don Quijote in your literature classes, you can visit La Mancha, home of the brave (or crazed) knight himself.
We stopped at this beautiful plaza on our road trip from Madrid to Córdoba. The statue is Don Quijote de la Mancha.
Once settled into Córdoba, we visited the Cathedral Mosque, a structure that definitely shows the diversity of religion in Spain. The cathedral was built inside the mosque!
The architecture and decorations have both Islamic and Catholic influences.
Within the next few days, we drove to Granada, home to the seat of the old Moorish kings and queens: La Alhambra, a gorgeous palace, along with the beautiful Generalife gardens.
The Moors loved to incorporate light, beauty and water, and this palace had them all!
My favorite place was Málaga. It is right next to the Mediterranean Sea, and is home to an incredibly diverse population of very friendly people! More often than not, they were tourists, just like us.
It was also home to some unbelievable views!
Unfortunately, I missed a lot of this part of the trip because I was stuck in banks all day. Traveler’s checks may seem like a good idea, but two out of the three banks I went to had trouble converting mine. Best to stick to Euros. Also, if you plan to do any banking abroad, have your passport with you when you go to the banks. As my friend from Honduras told me, and I learned firsthand, the States is the only place where a driver’s license is an acceptable form of I.D.
Luckily, I got out in time to join our group in visiting the Pablo Picasso museum. Picasso is a central figure to Spanish history and culture, and his art, timeless.
Now he even has his own bench!
From the pictures above, you may have been assuming the weather in Spain is absolutely gorgeous all of the time. WARNING: it isn’t. We went during the crossover of February to March. It is winter in Spain then, and trust me; the rain in Spain most definitely does not fall mainly on the plain!
And if you plan to visit ruins like the Medina Azahara on a rainy day, don’t forget to pack your rain boots and your umbrella!
A rain coat is also wise. The best thing you can do when packing to visit a foreign country is to pack layers. The weather can surprise you at any time, so be prepared!
CL Quick Tip: Check out our study abroad packing tips!
Something else that may surprise you is the food – I wasn’t prepared, but we had a tour guide to take us to some fabulous restaurants!
We spent our last day in Spain in the capital city of Madrid. This city is bursting with culture and history!
It is also home to some of the best pickpockets. One student in our group had his phone stolen from his zipped-up jacket pocket. If anything like a phone or credit card is stolen, find a way to cancel your service IMMEDIATELY.
Other amazing places to visit while you’re there are the Prado museum, the bullfighting rings, and the football (soccer) stadiums.
I didn’t get to visit those places, so comment below and let us know about your experiences there!
Debra Schreiber is a senior Spanish and journalism major at Duquesne University. She is a Senior CL Writing Intern. Her experience in Spain was unforgettable, and she hopes to go back and visit all of the places she missed!
How to Own a Job Fair
February 16, 2012 by DebraS
Filed under Careers, CL ExCLusives!, CL on your Campus, College Tips, Duquesne University, Etiquette, Professionalism, Top 10
Job fairs are excellent places to make connections with established companies, garner more information about jobs and internships, and learn about new businesses. How to do this is easy: be professional. But how? You only have a limited amount of time to talk to potential employers, and with all of the noise and other students, you need to find a way to stand out. Career centers are great places to pick up tips on how to do just that. Here are some tips from Duquesne University’s Career Services, this CL intern, and College Lifestyle’s CEO Shelly Marie Redmond on how to make an impression at a job fair.
Know who you want to see ahead of time. Companies making appearances will generally be listed on your school’s career center website. Make a note of who will be there, who you want to speak with, and write their names down.
Know what you’re talking about. After you know who you want to talk to, take some time to learn a little more about what they do. That way, when you talk to company representatives, you will be knowledgeable, able to ask the right questions, possibly able to answer theirs, and ready to show why you would be a good fit for them. It’s very similar to how you would approach writing a cover letter.
CL Quick Tip: Shelly says to know what you like about the company – it’s a question she always asks!
Make a list of questions. If there are companies you are seriously looking into, make sure you know what questions to ask about their specific internship programs and entry-level positions.
Be ready to sell yourself. Hundreds, maybe even thousands or students attend job fairs. It’s interview speed-dating. Make a quick speech about yourself, why you would like to work for the company, and your qualifications for the internship or job.
CL Quick Tip: Shelly says interview practice makes perfect!
Brush up your resume. Make sure it’s up to date and bring plenty of copies.
Make a good first impression. Introduce yourself. Shake the representative’s hand. Make eye contact. Smile. Remember their name.
Dress like a pro. No jeans or t-shirts here, ladies. You want to present yourselves as the classy, sophisticated co-eds you are, so break out the pearls and dress pants!
Pick up information. Most companies will have business cards, job listings, pens and all sorts of paraphernalia on their tables. Pick something up so you remember them and indicate your interest.
CL Quick Tip: Shelly says to make a note about what you and the company’s representative spoke about – that way you remember when you contact them!
Be prepared for disappointment… Some companies you speak to may end up disappointing you, whether it’s because their intern program is already full, or they’re not looking to hire someone so young.
…But expect the unexpected. If you have extra time, check out some tables you were originally skeptical of. You never know – they may have the position of your dreams!
