Day 23: CL’s Guide on Meeting New People Before Orientation!

One way to make the transition from high school to college a little easier is by already knowing someone at your school. If you already know someone going to the same college as you that’s great! But if you’re flying solo there are a few things you can do to meet some new people before orientation even starts!

Check out Facebook for any class groups (i.e. DeSales University Class of 2015!) or search through your school’s network. Most colleges have a freshman/class group that you can join and socialize through. This is a great way to meet people who will be going to your school or even to find a roommate!

If you are already on campus or moved into your apartment before orientation, try hitting all the local hotspots that students from your school seem to frequent. These places are a great way to get used to campus and student life at your school as well as great places to meet new people!

Another way to meet new people would be to research your college’s clubs and organizations on campus. Check your school’s website for a list of the clubs and contact the people in charge of the clubs you’re interested in. Once you touch base with the head of the club it could lead to introductions of other club members!

If you are playing a sport or interested in playing one for your school, try reaching out to current team members through Facebook. Teammates become quick and lasting friends! The same idea goes for rushing a sorority. If you know what sororities you are thinking of rushing, try reaching out to current sisters! Social media is a great tool for meeting new people before school starts!

Orientation and Move-In days are always a little nerve-racking. Knowing someone before even stepping foot on campus or heading to orientation sessions is a great way to ease some nerves! With the help of social media and a little outgoing actions, you’ll be on your way to meeting some new people that could later become some of your best friends at college!

CL’s Guide on Planning to Stay Healthy

The wonderful thing about summer is having whatever kind of food you want. The options are almost limitless. Summer is also an easier time to stay healthy. Sometimes being away at school can limit the healthy food option available. So if you’re planning on staying healthy through the school year here are a few tips to help you prepare!

1. Know Your Options

If you’re an in-coming freshman, talk to upperclassmen about the food options available on campus. Find out what is considered healthy and what needs to be avoided. If you’re a returning upperclassman then review what you already know about your campus’ food options. Plan out what you know you need to avoid and what your healthy options are.

Some schools (like mine!) provide nutrition information about the food they serve on the school website. This is a great tool to use if you are trying to stay healthy. It lets you know what are your best options are for staying healthy! Some schools also have a nutritionist on staff. Talking to him/her (or even a friend majoring in the field!) is also another good idea when planning to stay healthy on campus.

2. Plan

Now that you know your options you can plan out different meals. sometimes it’s easier to stay healthy if you have a game plan. If you aren’t into making meal plans, try making lists of the best food options or a list of things that definitely have to be avoided. If you are trying to lose weight, try keeping a food journal. Recording what you eat will let you see if you are staying healthy or over-eating on late night snacks.

It might also be a good idea to plan out what extra food you are going to bring with you (check out Maggie’s article on food essentials for your fridge!). This is also a good idea if you live off campus. Gather your roommates together and figure out who likes what and who is allergic to what so that you can make a better grocery list (this might be a fun skype chat or pre-school meet up over coffee!). Also planning meals while you live off campus is also a good way to stay healthy and reduce any excess stress (school works gives you enough of that as it is!). It might also be fun to create a cookbook of everyone’s favorite recipes (see Debra’s article on this idea!).

3. Be Creative!

One of the hardest things about staying healthy is avoiding all the unhealthy temptations (which usually surrounds you in the campus cafeteria. yikes!). The second hardest thing about eating healthy is food boredom. If your healthy options are few, then you might have to get creative to mix up your meals. Try different combinations like eating fruit in your cereal or salad instead of by itself.  Maybe think about different recipes you could try if you have your own kitchen off campus (or microwave meals!). Even different salad recipes would be good to change up your usual. Most salad bars have a variety of add-on options. Lastly, try something new! New foods can open the doors to even more healthy options and combinations!

4. Don’t Stress!

Staying healthy is about eating right and exercising. Don’t over plan or over limit yourself with food. If you break away from your plan or grab some fries instead of a salad than don’t stress or get upset about it! Eat what you want to eat, just keep everything in moderation (good portions!). If you go a little overboard just shake it off and start over (maybe even tell yourself that you’ll work out longer to make it up!). College is about having fun and you’ll be stressed enough with school work, so try and  stay lighthearted and focuses on what you know about eating healthy at your school. Don’t worry if you don’t follow the plan or pick the healthiest option! Remember you have plenty of opportunities to stay healthy!

Staying Classy on Vacation: A CL Guide!

Summer’s not over yet and there’s plenty of time for some vacations. If you’re heading off to the beach or traveling across seas, every CL girl should know her vacation etiquette! Here are some tips for when you’re traveling with a friend’s family instead of your own.

1. Be helpful!

Whether it’s packing up the car or carrying bags into the hotel, make sure you offer to help! Extra hands can go a long way during a vacation, especially when trying to save some time for more relaxing and fun activities!

2. Be Polite!

Minding your manners and saying please and thank-you are always good gestures. Your friend’s parents will also be impressed with the added gesture. Being polite can be the deciding factor between being invited to go on vacation again next year or not. Being polite also keeps the mood light and happy. Rudeness tends to add tension to the environment. Plus, being polite is just the classy thing to do!

3. Be Yourself!

If you’re not familiar with your friend’s family, you might feel a little bit uncomfortable or awkward when you first arrive. Being yourself is a great way to ease your own discomforts as well as allow the family to get to know you (I’m sure they’re just as nervous meeting you too!). Talking with your friend’s parents and siblings will also diminish some of the beginning awkwardness. Getting to know them and showing interest in them will allow you to fall into a routine with them. Once you feel comfortable around them, they’ll feel comfortable around you and you’ll be able to enjoy the vacation better!

Me and my friend's sister at the beach!

4. Be Gracious!

At the end of the vacation thank your friend’s parents for taking you with them. Also it’s always nice to send them a thank-you card in the mail after the vacation. If you feel comfortable enough or know the family well, giving a thank you gift at the end of the vacation is also a nice gesture!

Following these few tips will surely help you have a fun care-free vacation with your friend and his/her family! Plus you’ll be classy and every CL girl wants to stay classy!

Ask A CLIntern Responds: Getting Involved in Student Safety

Recently a  CL reader asked:

How can co-eds get involved in student safety on their campuses?

College is a time for fun, independence, making friends, and studying. To make sure you have the best time during college, every co-ed should know how to stay safe while on campus. Student safety on campuses is an important part of college life.

Co-eds can get involved in student safety in a variety of ways depending on your school’s safety program. Before getting into how to get more involved, make sure you know the safety basics of the school.

Most school’s have Emergency call buttons located around campus. It would be a good idea to know where they all are in case you come across trouble. Also some campuses have a text  and/or e-mail alert program. Signing up for the program can help you stay up to date with every kind of emergency (Last year our school sent out texts to let us know about rough weather like tornadoes in thearea). Get familiar with safety policies and procedures as well so you’re well informed before getting more involved!

If you want to get more involved with student safety, try meeting and talking to your head of campus security or resident life. If you feel students need to be more informed about campus procedures, policies, and safety options, try setting up a presentation with campus security, resident life, and student activities to show to fellow students. In my experience a lot of the safety polices are  covered during orientation, but things can easily be forgotten or missed during all the excitement of the first few days of college and a refresher might do some good!

Organizing a campus awareness or student safety club is another way to get involved. The club could organize fun and informative meetings and events to get students more involved. Or if you are more of a “hands-on” kind of co-ed then try getting involved with your college’s student EMS squad. The student-run EMS squad do a lot of the first responding to situations alongside campus security before outside help arrives. Also, at my school, there was a Rape Defense course that was free for students to take during each semester. See if your school offers anything similar and then spread all your new learned moves and tips to stay safe to fellow friends!

DeSales University's EMS squad

A great way to get involved with student safety is to talk! Talk to friends, classmates, teachers, workers, and administrators about staying safe and tips on how to do it! Word of mouth goes a long way!

Hopefully these suggestions answered your question and co-eds will go out and try being more involved with student safety on their campuses!

CL’s Fresh Summertime Flavors for the Healthy Co-ed!

Summertime is full of different flavors. Many delicious flavors of summertime dishes come from fruits and vegetables. After browsing through Tumblr, I came across a list of tasty fruits and vegetables that are low in calories and high in fiber. Plus they’re all summer favorites! So if you want to add some new flavors to your summer nights (or days!) then try some of these ways to mix-in these tasty treats!

Fruits!

Blackberries. Try blackberries in salads, smoothies, tea (hot or cold), jams, salad dressings, and pies!
I found a recipe for Blackberry-Basil Vinaigrette to add to a fresh and crisp salad!  It only takes 5 minutes and will add a delightful change to your summertime salad!

Raspberries. Raspberries are mostly known to be found in desserts and ice tea. However, to mix it up a bit, try them in a cereal like Cheerios or Special K. Add them to salads or choose a Raspberry-Vinaigrette salad dressing. Raspberry is also a common flavor in yogurts (a delicious and cool snack or addition to a lunch!). I found an interesting recipe for Raspberries. This recipe calls for Raspberries as ice cubes to add to a delicious Honey Lemonade! This will definitely be a great change to the normal summertime drink!

Blueberries. Blueberries are usually mixed in cereal, salads, jams, and in pies. The flavor is commonly found in yogurt as well. Why not try blueberries in a frozen fruit bar, in cream-cheese on a bagel (blueberry or not!), and in a smoothie. If you’re over 21, try a blueberry margarita. I found a recipe for Sweet Lime and Blueberry Pomegranate Chicken. It only takes 55 minutes and would be a fresh twist on a chicken dinner!

Peaches. Peaches are usually found in jams, pies, and teas. Peach is also another common yogurt flavor. Try adding peaches in salads. Grab some peach sorbet. Or try this delicious recipe I found for a Peach Smoothie!  It’s a different and refreshing treat for the summer!

Nectarine. Nectarines are usually eating alone or in a pie filling. However, nectarines would be great in a salad, smoothies, or sorbet dessert. Try this unique recipe for Nectarine and Radish Salsa! A different, but delicious and zesty topping for dinner or lunch!

Vegetables!

I know vegetables are not the most favorite food choices, but give them a try in these different ways to add some spontaneity to your summertime meals!

Broccoli. Broccoli is usually served cold and fresh with a dip or cooked as a side dish. It can be cooked with a creamy cheese sauce or mixed with carrots and cauliflower. Broccoli is also found in soups, salads, cooked with eggs (omelets and quiches), and in casseroles . I found a recipe for Broccoli Salad, a cool and fresh side dish that’s great for summertime parties!

Carrots. Again carrots are a favorite as a cooked side dish for dinner or as a raw snack with dip. They are usually mixed with other vegetables or eaten alone raw. To get a change with this vegetable you’re going to have to mix-up what you pair it with. I found a recipe for Herbed Carrots and Zucchini that looks so delicious! This vegetable mash-up is sure to be a hit summer flavor!

Sweet Yellow Corn. Who doesn’t love corn on the cob? It’s an essential summertime vegetable for any barbecue or  dinner. Corn is also a favorite side dish, usually paired with mash potatoes. Corn is also found in soups and burritos. I found a recipe for Mexican Yellow Squash With Cubed Pork Steaks that uses corn. This meal will definitely be a spicy treat for your summer!

Snap Green Beans. Snap green beans are also another side dish for dinner and is usually eaten cooked or raw. I’ve noticed that green beans are used in casseroles a lot as well. Try this Green Bean and Cherry Tomato recipe for a delicious summery side dish!

Sugar Snap Peas. Like green beans, these are also used as a side (both cooked and raw). When eaten raw, they definitely satisfy a crunchy craving and are deliciously fresh. They are used in different salads and found in a lot of Chinese dished . Try this recipe I found for Spring Rice Salad with Lemon-Dill Dressing that uses sugar snap peas as a mix-in vegetable. This will be a great summer side!

Try these fruit and vegetable filled recipes for healthy, refreshing, and tasty meals for summer! You’re sure to mix up your summer flavors with these selections! Go ahead and try something new!

CL’s Guide to Healthy Eating at the Movies!

With summer blockbusters like Harry Potter 7 part 2 just around the corner, many classy co-eds will be crowding the movie theaters this summer. (Check out CL’s Top 5 Summer Must Sees!) Every good movie needs some tasty snacks to complete the experience! But before you reach for the jumbo bowl of popcorn and large coke, read on to find out some healthier options to satisfy those movie-watching cravings!

1. Popcorn!
I love munching on some popcorn while watching a great movie. At the movie theater, it’s practically a rule to get some. Luckily popcorn’s considered to be a healthy snack if you eat it in the right sized portion. One way to do this would be to order a small popcorn and share it with a friend. You’ll end up eating less than you probably would. If none of your friends are takers, then try bringing some plastic snack bags to put the popcorn into–an easy way to portion out the popcorn. Also, when they ask if you want butter on the popcorn, (be strong!) say no. The popcorn will be a healthier snack without the added butter.

2. Drinks!
Movie theaters are prime places to fall into the soda craving trap. If you’re craving something sugary try ice-tea instead of the soda. However, for a few cents more, opt for the bottled water! Water is always the best option for drinking. No calories, No sugar, No worry!

3. Candy!
The candy at movie theaters is usually filled with sugar and unwanted calories. However, how can you say no to all that delicious candy? My suggestion if you want to stay healthy would be to pick either candy or popcorn and not both. Also another suggestion would be to pick a candy that’s chewy like Gummi Bears, Twizzlers, or Sour Patch Kids. Since these candies have you chewing, you’ll be eating more slowly. Eating slower will help you get full quicker because your brain will have time to register that your stomach is full. Check out the list of calories on all the movie theatre snacks here if you’re interested.

4. Bring Your Own!
A great way to stay healthy and quench those snack cravings would be to bring your own healthy snacks. Craving something crunchy? Try carrots or celery with dip. Not feeling vegetables? Try dry cereal for satisfying your crunchy craving or even your sugar cravings. Want something sweet? Bring some strawberries. Craving something salty? Pack some peanuts. You could even bring your own healthier popcorn popped at home. Just remember portion sizes with whatever snack you choose! Oh and enjoy the movie!

CL’s Guide to Orientation Etiquette!

It might be the beginning of summer, but college orientation is just around the corner! The first day on campus can be nerve racking. You’re suddenly thrust in a crowd of unfamiliar faces and are expected to “bond” and make friends. However, if you’re prepared with these few etiquette tips, you’re sure to shine and have a smoother, less-stressful orientation experience!.

1. Dress Appropriately.

There’s nothing I love more than fashion and using it to express myself. It’s a great way to communicate who you are in first impressions. However, orientation day might require sturdier clothing than what you’d rather wear. Keep in mind that you’ll be moving in and maybe be moving around a lot. Try wearing clothing that is fashionable to your particular tastes, but also functional. If you’ll be walking outside a lot, don’t wear your 4-inch wedges (unless, that is, if your feet won’t yell at you for it!). Don’t over-dress or under-dress. Remember that first impressions are lasting and you might be meeting future professors or administration workers that you might have to deal with later on in your college experience. Lastly, just be who you are in your clothing choice. You’ll feel more comfortable and more confident.

2. Smile!

Orientation might seem tedious when all you want to do is start having fun now that you’re out from under your parents’ watchful eyes. Don’t let this seep into your attitude. Yes, sometimes orientation is a bit much and you’d rather not be there, but everyone has been in your shoes. Plus, orientation is one of the first times you’re meeting your class. You’ll probably meet some of your greatest friends on orientation and over the first couple of days. Keeping a light-hearted air and a smile on your face can go a long way when meeting new people. Don’t let the minor down points of orientation keep you from staying happy, positive, and excited during the first few days of college. Just smile and have fun!

My friends Heather and Ally (they're roommates!) on Orientation Day! Beautiful Smiles :)

3. Be a Lady.

Excitement is definitely brewing in the air during orientation. But don’t get overexcited and display unladylike behavior. Have fun and be outgoing, but orientation isn’t the time to show everyone your the risk-taker or class clown. College is a time to be more mature and to let your high school self slowly stay behind. You should let loose around your friends and on the weekend, but during orientation you’re making your first impression. Staying classy and a lady will definitely keep you from the rumor mills on the first day. Don’t forget that professors, upperclassmen, and administrators might be there as well and staying a lady will definitely be just as remembered as if you were displaying other unladylike qualities.

4. Don’t be shy!

Orientation is the time to start making connections. Open up a little and mingle. Say “hi” to other classmates and anyone else who is there. Talk to the cafeteria staff (don’t forget please and thank-you!), the residence staff, and other administrators. One greeting can go along way in the future and might be a stepping stone for  great relationship that can open doors with work-study or a few extra fries at lunch time! Plus, you never know when you might meet your new best-friend or even future dating potentials! Stay friendly and you never know what could happen!

Through Classy Co-eds’ Eyes: Today’s Modern Classy Women

Every generation of classy co-eds has their inspiration for staying classy. Certain women throughout each decade have been a leading example for staying classy. Women such as Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O, Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Oprah have inspired women for years by their ability to stay true to themselves and their outward classy actions. Some have been an inspiration through their fashion, some through their words, and others through their philanthropy. It is clear they have inspired many classy co-eds.

Today’s generation, like others before it, has its own collection of classy women that inspire today’s fabulous co-eds. I decided to ask a few co-eds about who their classy modern-day women inspirations were and I received a fabulous list of classy women! Here are 10 of today’s modern classy women through the eyes of classy co-eds!

10. Ingrid Michaelson

Lauren Kline (DeSales University): “For me, artists like Ingrid Michaelson and Norah Jones inspire me because of their rich and unique sound. They dare to be different, and combine pop, rock, and jazz together to create something wonderful to listen to. Because of this, they automatically appear classy and down to earth.”

Nicole Cesarini (DeSales University): “I’d have to agree with Ingrid Michaelson. She’s definitely one of the classiest girls I know.”

Ingrid Michealson is a singer-songwriter from New York City who currently has four albums. Her latest song “Parachute” is now available on iTunes. (http://www.ingridmichaelson.com/)

9. Emily Deschanel

Meghan Kelly (DeSales University): “I think Emily Deschanel, from Bones, just exudes classiness, and I think anyone that is famous for their talents and not being in the tabloids are good examples.”

Emily Deschanel is currently the lead actress on FOX’s TV show: Bones. She is a supporter of PETA and the Adrienne Shelly Foundation. (http://emily-deschanel.org/)

8. Taylor Swift

Julia Hennessey (Gwynedd Mercy College): “I’m inspired by Taylor Swift. She’s one of the only female singers who hasn’t let the fame get to her head. She’s one of very few to write her own music. She’s dedicated to her fans. I read about one time where she was driving around Tennessee and saw a little girl wearing a Taylor Swift T-shirt. She followed the girl to the mall and tapped on her shoulder and when the girl turned around she said “I just wanted to meet you”. She always gives back to her fans. At award shows she’s just about the only one to thank her fans right away. And she’s a very good role model. A reporter once asked her why she doesn’t drink and do drugs to rebel and she said she takes her rebelling out through her music. She’s a great musician and great role model for fans of all ages.”

Taylor Swift is a country/pop singer-songwriter who currently has 3 albums. She just recently won video of the year award for the CMT awards. (http://www.taylorswift.com/)

7. Ali Fedotowsky

Chloe Palma (DeSales University): “I’m inspired by Carrie Underwood and Ali Fedotowsky (former bachelorette) they both are outspoken about supporting admirable causes like cancer research. And they are both committed to being healthy. I’ve read magazine interviews with Carrie and I relate to how she approaches her lifestyle. She doesn’t try to compare herself to others. She just wants to be the best her. She also talked about dieting, not being necessary,  just watching what you eat and doing something every day to be active. Not to sound creepy, but I follow Ali’s page on Facebook and she is always posting about different ways to get healthy and shows what she’s doing to stay healthy too. She now works as a news correspondent in San Diego and does a lot of great pieces on inspirational figures. I think she is inspirational herself.”

Ali  Fedotowsky was the former Bachelorette on ABC.

6.  Maura Tierney

Jenna Minetola (DeSales University): “One woman that I find incredibly inspiring is actress Maura Tierney. I am a huge ER fan! Maura played the humorous, strong willed, honest, and empathetic Dr. Abby Lockhart. But the reason I am so drawn to Maura is because she is all of these things in *reality*. In addition to her charismatic personality, Maura has dealt with serious medical issues of her own; Maura was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery in 2009 to remove a tumor. Since then, Maura has been has been battling her fight successfully. What makes her so amazing is that she has shared her story through many outlets bringing awareness to the deadly disease with grace.”

Maura Tierney is best known for her role in ER. She has been an actress for many years and has shown strength, courage, and class through her current battle with breast cancer. (http://mauratierney.com/)

5. Kate Middleton

Veronica Gabrielle Ropplet (DeSales University): “I’m a big fan of classy girls and Kate Middleton is a perfect example!”

Kate Middleton recently married Prince William of England. She  is known for her fashion sense and classiness in public! (http://www.katemiddleton.com/)

4. Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway has always been my celebrity inspiration. Her class emanates through her fashion, acting, and manner. She is one of my favorite actresses and I’ve been following her career since Princess Diaries. She is truly inspiring to me.

Anne Hathaway got her first break in a TV-show “Get Real” and has been developing her career since then. She supports the Clinton Foundation, Human Rights Campaign, The Lollipop Theatre Network, and The  Hollywood Cookbook. (http://www.annehathawayweb.com/)

3. Reese Witherspoon

Veronica Gabrielle Ropplet (DeSales University): “A good example is Reese Witherspoon’s speech from the MTV movie awards last night. She basically talked about how it was good to be classy.”

Reese Witherspoon has been successful actress for many years. She just recently won MTV’s Generation award. She is quoted as saying “for all the girls out there, it’s totally possible to be a good girl, I’m going to try to make it cool” in her speech accepting the award. (http://www.r-witherspoon.com/)

2. Sandra Bullock

Meghan Kelly (DeSales University): “Also Sandra Bullock, after everything she went through, she was able to stay classy.”

Sandra Bullock has also been a successful actress for many years. Her class shines through her action, both on and off screen. Her fashion is one of elegance and sophistication. She handles every situation with class, specifically the difficult situation with her recent ex-husband last year. She has also won MTV’s Generation award (2010).  (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000113/)

1. Our Everyday Classy Women

My Mother, Grandmother, and I. These women are my best inspiration for staying classy!

Kressa Dowling (DeSales University): “I know a lot of people have answered saying that famous women have be inspirational to them, but I would have to say that my grandmother is the most inspirational woman I know. She was raised in a large family during the Great Depression, which left her with very little money and life experiences. Her family couldn’t afford to send her to nursing school so she had to get a job right out of high school. She then worked from the age of 18 to 69, raised four children, and made sure they all had a strong educational background that allowed them to attend a quality college and have all the things my grandmother never had. She also helped raise me by being both my babysitter and best friend while growing up. My grandmother is a strong woman who worked very hard throughout her whole life to give her children opportunities that she never had herself. She also made sure both her children and grandchildren know that in order to receive great things in life you must work hard to get them.”

Gina Ascola (DeSales University): “While it’s odd because I only met her just recently, my clinical instructor is a huge inspiration to me. She is always running all over the place without ever giving herself a break and she always has her heart in everything she does which anyone who knows her can see. She is her own kind of classy and I only hope that one day I can be half of the classy lady she is both as a nurse and a person.”

Every classy co-ed has a special woman close at home that inspires them. My mother and grandmother are my two classy inspirations. There are many amazing women among us who exhibit classiness.  One of the everyday women who shine with classiness is CL’s very own Shelly Redmond. See Abby’s article on Shelly! Hopefully these fabulous women will inspire you to stay classy through any situation!

The Classy Co-Ed’s Guide to a Healthy Work Break!

Summertime is a busy period of catching up with friends, working to save up some cash, and taking vacations to keep you relaxed. Balancing can leave a busy co-ed feeling stressed, especially at work.  When you’re stressed or tired (maybe even bored) at work it can lead to unhealthy choices come break time. Here are few tips to help you choose healthier meals during your lunch (or dinner) hour at work—keeping you fit, fabulous, and fresh!

1. Pack Your Food!

Brown-bagging your food for break time is the easiest way to make healthy choices. Planning out your meals before work and then packing the meals with you takes away the stress of choosing later on in the day. Plus, you’ll be less tempted to pick an unhealthy craving you have at the time. If you’re late and rushing out the door or if you are always on the go, then try grabbing some low-fat yogurt, a piece of fruit, and a pre-packaged low-calorie snack (I love the 100 calorie Nabisco® Chips Ahoy thin crisps!). There is no prep-time involved, just a quick grab, pack, and go! (Check out Alli’s article for more on Staying Healthy While on the Go!)

2. Go Grocery Shopping!

Grocery stores may seem like a weird place to go to for food on your lunch break, but they contain multiple healthy choices. If you’re lucky enough to work near a grocery store (or even work at one) then you have an array of options at your grasp. Some grocery stores offer a salad bar for you to create a delicious salad the way you like it. If they don’t have a salad bar, most grocery stores have premade salads that you can buy. Grocery stores also have healthy microwaveable containers of soup, pasta, frozen meals, etc. for a quick and easy to make meal during your break. The best tip for choosing is to look at the nutrition labels on the product (see Nicole Celli’s article on Nutrition 101).

Also, don’t feel weird by acting like a bit of a kid. Some products that grocery stores sell are pre-packaged fruit and vegetable containers made for kids’ lunches, like Disney’s Fresh Foodles (which are in the shape of Mickey’s head!).

3. Portions are Key!

If you like to go to a pizza place, diner, or local food joint near you (like a Subway or Five Guys) keep an eye on your portions! If you are craving a slice of pizza then stay with a plain, white, or tomato pie slice and keep it at only one slice. If you are ordering a sandwich get it on whole wheat and choose the smaller size. If you’re ordering food at a diner then check their menu for low-cal or low-fat meals. I’ve found it’s best to stay away from fried foods; although it’s alright to eat them in moderation. Staying healthy means you can still eat all your favorite foods; you just have to eat them in smaller portions. Less is the way to go!

4. Know Your Facts!

If you are taking your break at a fast food joint then check the calorie chart. Nowadays, fast food joints post a chart of all their products listed with their calories hanging on the wall. Sometimes it’s hard to find, but it’s there. You’d be surprised at what are the healthier options. I’ve found that usually grilled chicken sandwiches and salads with low fat dressing are the healthiest options. The chart lists out everything separate, so if you are getting a value meal (with fries) don’t forget to add up each item for a total calorie count. Looking the chart over before ordering can help you choose a healthier option!

5. H20 is always the way to go!

When work leaves you stressed and tired you might start craving caffeine. This often leads to grabbing soda as your drink of choice during break. However, sometimes you might be feeling tired because you’re dehydrated. The best way to rejuvenate your body is by drinking water. Water rehydrates your body; helping you feel more awake and vibrant. Plus, water is the best drink option for when you’re trying to stay healthy!

After following these few tips, you’re sure to be on your way to having a healthier stress-free lunch break at work! Keeping stress-free and healthy will help you to stay looking good throughout the summer and for back to school come fall semester! What I plan to bring to CL this summer…a fresh and fun spin on staying healthy and classy while in college with tips and advice for any classy co-ed trying to stay fit and eating right!

Why am I excited to be a CL intern: I’m excited because I get to spend the summer writing, which I love to do. Plus, everyone at CL is fabulous! I’m excited to work with such a classy and talented group! CL is definitely a great site for helping co-eds through college and I’m excited to be a part of it all!

Career goals: My dream job would be to write for a magazine like Seventeen; Cosmo; Vogue, etc. I would also love to work for a publishing house like Harper or Penguin. As long as I get to be around writing! I would also love to travel as much as I can (it would be fun to be a travel writer!).

My two good friends and I supporting our Bulldogs!

A classy co-ed is…….someone who can be elegant and poised, but can also let her hair down in a fun and positive way. She is smart, friendly, and has her own unique quirks that she embraces. She is someone that others look up to and she it someone who  will influence the world in a positive way.

A FUN fact about me: I can’t get enough of Philly sports. I watch all my Philly teams whenever I can! I have also played soccer for 13 years; I love playing my guitar late at night; and I own more books than movies.
