A Classy Sunglass Warehouse Intern: Krista Weber dishes the secrets to finding the perfect pair of sunglasses

After what may have seemed like a long winter for some classy co-eds, spring has finally arrived and bringing tons of new spring trends! With the sun glaring down and temperatures rising, every classy co-ed should own a pair of trendy sunglasses. Don’t waste your time looking through magazines or spending hours at a department store looking for the right pair, but instead take advice from Krista Weber, an intern at Sunglass Warehouse. Krista is a fashionista who attends Butler University where she is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.

CL: What is your definition of a classy co-ed?

KW:  I would define classy co-eds as college students who stay true to who they are and enjoy keeping up with the latest fashion trends

CL: How do you stay classy?

KW: I stay classy by wearing cat eye sunglasses because they have a classic look but also help me keep up with my retro style.

CL: How does Sunglass Warehouse fit or cater to the needs of classy co-eds?

KW: Sunglass Warehouse caters to the needs of classy co-eds by staying on top of the latest trends and providing multiple sunglass styles to fit anyone’s personality and taste.

CL: What are the top trends for sunglasses this spring?

KW: Top sunglass trends this spring would definitely be cat eyes, brights, and round oversized sunglasses.

CL: What are some tips to finding the perfect pair of sunglasses?

KW: To find the perfect pair of sunglasses, it is important to keep your face shape in mind as well as the color of your hair and skin. Sunglass Warehouse, has a free widget called The Sun Authority. The widget provides ways of identifying your face shape using images for comparison and then provides sunglasses suggestions accordingly. For example, I have a heart-shaped face, just like Reece Witherspoon, and cat-eye styles, which feature wide angles at the top of the frames, help to balance the jaw line. Generally, shapes that are wider on the top than the bottom work well as they minimize the forehead’s width and help balance the face. Frames with rimless bottoms or a straight top line will have this effect, such as aviators.

CL: How do you wear your sunglasses?

KW: I wear my cat eye sunglasses with a classy animal print spring scarf, jean button down, red jeans, a colorful cross body and a Fedora Hat. This is a very trendy look for spring!

My personal favorite are the aviators! What’s yours? Be sure to leave a comment and let us know!

Six Tips For a Balanced Lifestyle

Balancing work, school, internships and just life in general can become a struggle especially when it’s all winding down to finals week.  With only three or four weeks left in the school semester, it is what some people call “crunch time.” Right now is the time to end on a good note with all things you are involved in.

As a student who took on a campus job, a reporting position, an internship and four classes all at the same time, I can speak from experience that it is chaotic. Long days turned into long nights and there was nothing I could do about it but keep working. Not only did it take a toll on my sleeping habits, I officially became burned out.

But throughout the past two semesters of juggling all of those responsibilities, I learned a few tricks of the trade to keep going when all I wanted to do was crawl into bed and hide from everything.

1.) Make your agenda your best friend

Buying a planner sounds like a standard plan of action for organizing your life, but you have to actually use it. Keep your organizer organized by ranking most important events or tasks by importance with different highlighter colors.

2.) Block out hours for working

Balancing more than one responsibility can get confusing. Writing for two different publications and writing for classes made deadlines for me extremely important. The best way I balanced this was to put everything in order of what had to be done and basically “schedule” times I would sit down and do it.

3.) Buy a smart phone

It may be out of your budget, but it is the best investment for a busy college student. Being able to merge my school and work emails into the same group and accessing the internet at any moment has definitely increased my productivity. It may not necessarily help you “balance” life but it does make it easier.

4.) Ask for help

When life gets chaotic, don’t be shy to let your friends step in. It’s okay to say you need help or can’t do something.  Especially when you need advice, friends or parents can give you an outside view on your chaotic life. Remember: “It’s okay to not be okay.”

5.) Don’t sweat the small stuff

Taking on more duties means there’s that much more to possibly mess up. Don’t worry about every little mistake or problem that doesn’t REALLY matter.  Mistakes will happen and usually they will help you improve in all areas of life.

6.) Schedule time for fun

Remember that life shouldn’t always be about working. Take time to enjoy your college days and go to fun events with friends. One of my favorite quotes to live by: “Taking time to live your life will only inspire your work.”

Some more of my inspirational “keep on moving” quotes:

“Worrying will never change the outcome.”

“Eventually everything falls into place. Until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moment and know that everything happens for a reason.”

“Don’t make a bad day make you feel like you have a bad life.”

“Everything in life is temporary. So if things are going good, enjoy them while they last. If things are going bad, don’t worry. It can’t last forever either.”

College Lifestyles has created a board full of inspirational quotes on Pinterest for when you’re feeling stressed or sad. I even printed out some
of my favorite quotes and photos and have them on my bedroom wall for whenever I need to turn to something for reassurance.

10 Valuable Networking Tips

If you clicked on this article, you might be learning how to become more of a professional and trying to find a job to enter the professional world. It is never too late or too early to network. Networking is not always about establishing relationships will help you get a job. Networking helps you establish meaningful relationships you will be able to take with you for years to come.

As you connect with others, remember these tips I will outline. These tips were acquired through good and bad experiences I had when making connections with others.

Tip #1: If you do not have a business card, get one.Your business card can list your name, contact, school and major. This card is for people to remember you by and to contact you.

Tip #2: Do not ask for business cards unless you plan to follow up with them. The follow up is the most important step when making connections at a networking event.

Tip #3:  Brainstorm the qualities that set you a part from thousands of other students and professionals going for the same job. This is great for you to think about since that is a main question in an interview.

Tip #4: Do some research on various companies, industries and organizations. Use this to keep up to date on business, local and international news. This will set you apart and impress people as you show you have an interest.

Tip #5: Focus your networking efforts on how you can help others. By building relationships around helping others you help show your character and that you are not just seeking something from them. This simple gesture creates good value in your relationship going beyond looking for a job. You can achieve this by asking if there is anything you can do to help them, or what is the perfect customer or target market for them so that you can use your other contacts to connect people who might mutually benefit. Do not worry about landing the perfect job because networking has a way of coming back around.

Tip #6: Try to keep the conversation simple when meeting someone new. Introduce yourself and then follow up with a question that is about them.

Tip #7: Have a brief about yourself ready to be said. Most of the time people like to include who they are and what they study. I like to gear towards my individuality as a person. Feel the conversation out and base your introduction of yourself based off of what is asked or what is said. Here is a classic line of mine, “My name is Jane Doe. I am pursuing a major in mass communications broadcasting with a double minor in criminology and international relations. I am the public relations director for my university PRSSA. A student with many names, I am not defined by the titles I hold but instead by the characters I posses.”

Tip #8: Continue to ask questions.

Tip #9: When you are out networking, never meet someone and ask for a job or ask if they are hiring.Instead, it is important to seek information, learn from the person, and come up with ways to help them. If you are really looking for something, ask something like, “Do you know who I should talk to in order to learn opportunities with your company?”

Tip #10: Network with everyone. This includes other students and all levels of professionals. Even if a professional is not in the industry that you are interested in, you never know where you will be, or where they will be five years from now or who they know or are related to.

Networking provides great opportunities to connect with professionals all around. Be proactive in getting to different events, ask questions and be sure to follow up. The more you network, the more opportunities will come your way, and the more people you would know to help you and connect you with others in the future. There are never a lot of students at networking event, which already sets you a part. Expand on your opportunities!

Intern Kitchen – Caramel Apple & White Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Bars

Intern Kitchen goes gluten free! I became gluten free almost 2 years ago. I have a wheat intolerance – not celiacs and for a while, it was very hard for me to give up certain foods and learn how to eat better for my health. In October, I decided to create a blog TwentyOne No Gluten, for those looking for gluten free recipes, reviews of different restaurants that have gluten free menus and tips on how to live and travel gluten free. I want to share one of my favorite recipes that is delicious, sweet and gluten free all at the same time. A lot of people think gluten free means taste free and TwentyOne No Gluten is here to tell you that’s not true at all!

Caramel Apple & White Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Bars. A mouthful yes. A mouthful of tasty!! (See what I did there). You’ll enjoy these. Peanut butter and apples go so well together. So does caramel and apples. White chocolate is delicious, well…with a LOT of things! With the edition of oats, these bars are sure to be a hit!

Caramel Apple & White Chocolate Peanut Butter Oat Bars

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup vegan butter, softened (Earth Balance)
  • 2 cup gluten free rolled oats (not the quick cook ones)
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 tablespoon ginger
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup apples, diced & peeled
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips (or regular dark/semisweet chocolate chips, peanut butter chips if you don’t like white chocolate…but I REALLY suggest using white chocolate)
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  1. Preheat your oven to 350ºF. Line a 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 pan with foil and then spray foil with non-stick vegetable baking spray. Set aside.
  2. Combine applesauce, peanut butter, vegan butter in a large mixing bowl and stir to combine them.
  3. Then add oats, sugars, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, and vanilla extract and stir.
  4. Then fold in diced apples and white chocolate chips.
  5. Spread batter (it will be pretty moist) into a foil-lined and spayed 8 x 8 or 9 x 9 pan.
  6. Bake at 350ºF for 30 minutes.  The bars may still look underdone, but that’s ok because they will continue to set up as they cool.
  7. They will be bubbling rapidly upon removing them from the oven.  Let the bubbling stop (about 5 minutes) and then carefully drizzle the caramel sauce over the top of the bars.  Allow bars to to cool very well before slicing. (if you are in a hurry to bite into the deliciousness, pop in the freezer for 15-30 minutes)
  8. Store extras in the freezer for long term storage.

These are one of the many perfect taste combinations. The bars are like the perfect brownie: chewy edges with soft middles, and dense (not cakey, airy, orlight). Plus brown sugar makes everything more caramely and chewier and gives baked goods that sink-your-teeth-into-it texture,  which is always a bonus.

ENJOY!

5 Must Have Smartphone Applications for School

You might recognize the feeling of being overwhelmed as class begins to pick up while you are still finding ways to study. Unfortunately when busy, our body does the natural act of cutting out what we need the most in order to complete the tasks: Sleep.

Through the help of friends and market exploring on my smartphone, I have found five free applications that will allow one to perform effectively with the help of time management.

  • My Homework Application: This application does a great job at keeping school responsibilities organized from the smartphone. This application allows you to keep track of assignments by adding due dates, upcoming test assignments, and listing all of your classes, times, and days. This application comes with an alarm that you can set, letting you know when an assignment should be completed. The notification feature on this application is the best part. Allow your phone to do the work for you. Do not allow your brain to be more crowded with due dates than what it already is.
  • Sparky Application Review: The Sparky application allows you to look up literature in SparkNotes. With the help of SparkNotes, obtain detailed descriptions on motifs, character analysis, and plot summaries.
  •  Merriam Webster Dictionary Application: Use this application to improve your vocabulary and challenge yourself on what you thought you knew. With this application take a look at the daily word which is also given with a detailed description on the history of the word.
  •  Dictionary Application: Although this application serves the same purpose of the above application, together they complement one another. The Dictionary application also has words of the day but includes “The Hot Word” and “Question of the day.”
  • Voice Recorder: Use this to record lectures or notes that you might not want to waist a whole paper on. With this application you are able to transfer recorded date to and from your computer.

Use these applications to enhance the way you obtain knowledge

Alex and the City: Introducing CL’s New York City Intern Guide

When I was nine years old my grandparents took me to the place where they grew up, New York City. I instantly fell in love with the contagious energy you can feel throughout the hustle and bustle on the streets and made it my goal to live there some day. A lot has changed in my life since that trip. I’m seven years older and my career aspirations have changed from whale trainer to Broadway singer to journalist. One thing has stayed the same. I am still absolutely in love with the Empire State.

This past summer affirmed my career path decision and post-graduation living plans. I scored an Editorial Internship with Martha Stewart Weddings. I worked and lived in the city for three months. I fell in love with magazine editing and gained an amazing amount of experience, both in and outside the office. I learned what it was like to be a real New Yorker.

Taking a boat ride on the Lake in Central Park.

This wasn’t my first time living in the city. Two summers before I spent a month in New York, taking a summer intensive course at Parsons The New School for Design with a close friend who is also named Alex. She, coincidentally, also interned at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia with me this summer! AJ and I are New York buddies. We’ve shared the most incredible adventures in the city together. We’ve watched Fourth of July fireworks by rooftop, mastered the Subway, watched Anne Hathaway perform at Shakespeare in the Park and even spent a day off of work at the beach!

AJ and I on the roof of the building we worked in for the Martha Stewart Fourth of July party. We were right on the water and had a perfect view of the fireworks!

I want to share my insider tips with classy co-eds who are interning in New York City so their internship experience can be as much fun and rewarding as mine was. If you’re living, visiting or interning in New York City, be on the look out for more Alex and The City posts soon! I’ll share helpful tips, like how to do NYC grocery shopping on a budget or how to commute around town efficiently, as well as fun tips, like how to fine free and must-attend events or how to work a sample sale (yes, they really do exist!)

The mantra of New York City summer internship experience was work hard, play harder. Life is what you make it. No matter where your summer internship is, it is important to remember that this is the time to embrace every moment. Life has the potential to be an adventure if you let it, so don’t be afraid to try something new or step out of your comfort zone. Your internship will get you there, but it’s up to you to make the most of it.

The Bachelor (Week 6)

In Week 6 of The Bachelor, the contestants continue to bash Courtney, undoubtedly the villainess of the season. Most girls are more concerned with sending her home without a rose than furthering their relationships with Ben Flajnik, a winemaker from Sonoma. Courtney has adopted the attitude of the front-runner. She believes her relationship with Ben is the strongest, and it very well may be considering her and Ben’s “intimate moment” of skinny-dipping in Puerto Rico last week. Their relationship continues to grow this week as Ben’s group date with the girls turns more into a one-on-one date with Courtney. The two spend the majority of the date, in which the group dresses up with an Embera Tribe, dancing together. This infuriates many of the girls, who, instead of attempting to form their own connections with Ben, criticize Courtney for being “aggressive” and scheme to send her home.

Ben also shares a romantic one-on-one date with Kacie B., unquestionably a viewer favorite. Ben takes the 24 year old from Tennessee to their own private island. She is told to bring three things with her on the date. Her choices—a stuffed monkey, a corkscrew, and a bag of candy—reveal her young age and careless attitude. Kacie, who is the first contestant to have a second one-on-one date with Ben, opens up to him about her eating disorder in high school. This brings the two closer together, forming a bond Courtney and the other girls should definitely be concerned about.

Lastly, Ben takes Rachel and Blakely on the dreaded two-on-one date. In this situation, “there are two girls and one rose—one stays and one goes.” After receiving the date card, Rachel immediately becomes nervous and dreads the date while Blakely is overly confident and excited about it. Maybe that is her downfall. Blakely, although opening up to Ben in a way she claims she never has before, is tragically sent home.

Week 6 wraps up with the dramatic exit of Casey B., who admits to being in love with her ex boyfriend from home after questioned by Chris Harrison, and the dismissal of Jamie in the rose ceremony. As always, week 6 is a very eventful episode—perhaps “the most dramatic in Bachelor history.”

Classic RockStar: Winter Date Look for Under $100!

Winter is a time to love to fall in love. Everyone wants to spend the holidays with that special someone. Once the holiday’s pass that feeling doesn’t go away it lasts all winter

The look I put together is just under $100 for the whole ensemble! That’s less than one pair of designer jeans. All of the pieces are classics so you won’t have to worry about them going out of style.

When I was looking for inspiration for the date night look I thought well about how you want to present yourself. On a date you want to show you have a sweet side, but also have a little edge. I picked colors that would portray just that. I picked nude/tan color for the soft neutral and the obvious staple and edgy color, black.

The main purpose of this article for me is to show you don’t have to spend a million dollars to look like a million bucks. I set the budget under $100, and though it came close at $97.76 I can assure you for the classic pieces you’re getting would be a steal. The key is to not get the exact pieces it’s to take the ideas I’ve styled and make them your own. Individuality is important for a classy co-ed.

For my look I selected all my pieces from two stores, H&M and Forever 21. These two stores as most money-saving fashion-lovers know are the best for getting designer inspired looks for much less.

First, I started with the tank from H&M, it flows and in the tan/nude color I chose. I also love the saying I think it shows you have a fun side with cute sayings on a shirt, and best of all, it’s $13 for H&M!

Second, I found the perfect skirt to match with the edgy thick stripes. The skirt is $5.26 from H&M as well. I found leggings to go underneath for $6.50 from Forever 21, a little less than the H&M price of $13 dollars.

Next I added a faux-leather jacket because it’s leather and I think it gives the outfit a little less soft and prevents it from being too girly.

To me a date night essential is accessories. Heels are always a nice touch for a date; the elongate your legs and make you stand straighter with more confidence. If heels aren’t your style, nude flats or booties work well for winter too. My must have accessory for this winter is a scarf I found this great nude-toned knit scarf for $8 from Forever 21. Scarves are great investment pieces, especially if you live in a cold climate, they are a must. My last essential for a date is a clutch. The one I chose is nude and black with a flower detail. It is also important to bring a clutch as you’re emergency kit with all your must have items. Also, Just because it’s winter that doesn’t mean you can’t still embrace floral prints and details.

Have fun in the winter season. Let yourself not be afraid to try new things and look great in the process.

CL’s Guide to Finding an Internship!

As a classy co-ed, there’s a good chance you’ve heard the internship speech a hundred times over. Parents and professors are constantly telling us the importance of finding an internship in college. While these speeches can get repetitive, they do have a point. Internships are the best way to get experience in a field you are interested in. And while they look great on a resume, they also teach you how to be a good employee, manage your time, and be a go-getter. The process of internship hunting can be a daunting task, but fear not, co-eds! CL is here to help you every step of the way!

To help you begin your search, here are CL’s suggestions on where to look for internships:

1. Your school’s career center: This suggestion may be obvious, but you’d be surprised how many co-eds never set foot in their school’s career center! Career centers exist for the sole purpose of helping students find internships and jobs, so take advantage! Meet with a career counselor and discuss your future plans. In addition to helping you find an internship, a counselor can help you with resume and cover letter writing and even set up mock-interviews for you to practice before you do the real thing! Many career centers also have online job boards where they post internship opportunities for students. Be sure to see if your school has one!

2. Internqueen.com- Intern Queen Lauren Berger had 15(!) internships in college. She now runs her own website that helps college students find internships. Her website features internship postings from all over the country and a variety of fields. She also wrote a book that gives advice on everything related to internships. Check out CL’s review of her book “All Work, No Pay”.

3. Internships.com- This website features internships from all geographic areas and disciplines. You can type in fields that interest you and your location and the site will give you internships that match your criteria.

4. SimplyHired.com-This awesome site also allows you to search by geographic area, field, or even company. You can also get daily e-mail alerts when internships that match your criteria are posted.

5. Career Fairs- Does your school have any career fairs this semester? If so, go to them! Put on your best professional outfit, print copies of your resume and go impress those company representatives!

6. Networking- As a classy co-ed, you are sure to learn the importance of networking if you haven’t already! Network with your professors, friends, family, and anyone else you can think of! Does your dad have a friend who works at a company you are interested in? Ask him to introduce you! Another great group of people to network with is your school alumni! Seek out alumni who work in your chosen field and ask them for advice. They went to your school, so you already have something in common! Also, most alums love to help kind, ambitious students in any way they can.

7. The CL Internship and Job Bank- That’s right, College Lifestyles is now also a great place to look for internships and jobs! The CL Job Bank will be up and running by the end of February. It will contain positions for all disciplines. Be sure to check back next month to see if there are any positions you are interested in!

I hope these resources help you in your internship hunt! Find opportunities that catch your eye, then go wow those potential employers! Don’t be afraid to apply for positions that are known to be competitive. Put your best foot forward and always remember, you are amazing!

Klassy Kardashian Style For Less: Steal Kim’s Look

Have you ever watched Keep Up With Kardashians? Chances are unless you haven’t turned on a television in years, you have. Kim Kardashian is a starlet known for scandal, beauty, a crazy family, and her STYLE. Recently, she has taken her fashion love to the next level. She has released a clothing line exclusively with Sears alongside her sisters, creatively titled the Kardashian Kollection. If you have wanted to steal Kim’s expensive designer wardrobe, I’m going to show you how. The best part is, both outfits fit within a classy college co-ed’s budget.

The first look is an everyday look with Kim strutting around town. This look will turn heads in any place. It could work for school, lunch with the girls, or a trip to the mall. Kim rocks a striped white and red shirt, an army green skirt, nude heels, and a designer bag. This look had cost Kim’s hundreds, not counting the bag worth thousands! First, the shirt, I found striped top from yesstyle.com for a steal of $22! It is what seems to be an exact replica of Kim’s! Next is the army green skirt. It’s on sale at yesstyle.com for only $24! The one that is featured even has extra flare with button details down the sides. Kim’s doesn’t have this detail, but it is important when getting inspired from a look to make it your own. Lastly, what Kardashian look would be complete without some killer heels and a fabulous bag? When looking for shoes my go-to place is always DSW, and like always they didn’t disappoint. Kim’s strappy heels easily cost hundreds, but these from DSW are a much less budget-breaking $50. Without doubt the hardest to match was the bag. After some research I found a good match from piperlime.gap.com

My second look is an evening look. Kim loves to go out and have a good time, and often she sports a figure-flattering bodycon dress. It has become her signature. I found this photo of Kim taken very recently in a white-jeweled bodycon dress. It was taken after she had gotten her new ‘do, as she is now framing her beautiful face with blunt bangs. Kim’s dress is Gucci, and while all girl would kill for a designer dress, that dress in particular cost more than most people’s entire wardrobe!  I found a very similar party dress from nastygal.com with metal accents for $48! I am a fan of the replica dress because the mesh and the sweetheart neckline and mesh on top make it more age-appropriate and edgy.  Also in Kim’s look she pairs the dress with closed-toe glitter heels. I found similar stilettos at heels.com for $50. The final pieces to the look are the set of bangles and hoop earrings. Ever since I was ten years old my non-stop-shop for accessories for accessories for Claire’s and that hasn’t changed. I found the bracelets for $13, close to the price of this fashionista’s cup of coffee. Joking. But all kidding aside, they are an amazing deal. The earrings I found at American Apparel, a company for both the famous and everyday fabulous co-eds alike.

I hope these looks inspire you to try something new and not be afraid to copy your favorite stars. It’s not as hard to “keep up with the Kardashians” as you may have thought.

For more info on these looks go to http://alexlovesyou92.polyvore.com/
