Intern Closet: Spring Style

Since the weather in Michigan has reached temperatures warm enough to bare legs, spring skirts have been filing into my closet. I bought my first maxi skirt this spring and now I can’t stop buying them. Three maxis hang in my closet now and I plan on buying more because of their versatility. They go with anything and still look like you put some effort into your outfit. I consider them the leggings of warm weather.

For Easter Sunday, I wore what  I call the “mullet” form of the classic maxi. The hi-low skirt is shorter in the front and goes long in the back. The skirt give you the breathability that jeans just don’t in the warmer temperatures and gives off a  ”classy” vibe.

I paired my coral colored skirt with a button up white blouse to contrast the bright color with something more neutral. Then I accessorized with a pastel colored necklace, a rose gold watch, a couple of my favorite bracelets and brown leather flip flops.

Take a look at the final outcome!

Both my top and skirt are from Kohl’s. The skirt is from the LC Lauren Conrad collection and the blouse is by Apt. 9.

I wear this Forever 21 necklace with everything. Although it is a blueish color, I like to pair it with coral, peach, gold and even magenta.

My rose gold watch is always on my wrist. If it’s not, I usually feel naked without it and I will be late to everything. I put on a couple bracelets I’ve had for years to give my outfit a more casual look.

I hear a lot of people say that they don’t wear maxi skirts because they don’t think they can pull them off. I was once like that until I realized they are universally flattering.  At any height, they make a person look taller. This trend is hot right now and perfect for mild temperatures, so don’t be afraid to go for it with confidence!

Want a Japanese Inspired Look? Try Tokidoki!

Remember when Gwen Stefani made the Harajuki look the hottest style back in the “Hollaback Girl” video? Well today you can achieve an everyday look with Tokidoki products. I reviewed three of their products and I guarantee you if you like vibrant colors and convenience, Tokidoki is the brand for you!

Perfetto Eyeliner: Who knew your eyeliner could let you become an artist? Tokidoki’s Perfetto Eyeliners ($16) create a perfect liquid line every time. I tried the Carina (Eggplant) and Captain Banana (Rich Chocolate) colors. What I loved about the eyeliners is that you can create a thin or thick line is a snap. Your makeup won’t smudge, dries fast, and is easy for a beginner to use. The colors are bright, which is wonderful for the spring and summer!

Perfetto Eyeliner

Roulette Gloss Trio: Lip-gloss has never gotten easier to use. A lot of times I find myself switching my lip color throughout the day and carrying more products in my purse. Not anymore! The Roulette Gloss Trio ($18) has three different mini glosses in one a cute innovative case. Best of all the glosses are made without Parabens. If you want the baby pink look for the day or the more sophisticated darker look for night, you can find it with the Roulette Gloss Trio. I especially liked how the glosses were not sticky and had just the right amount of shimmer.

Roulette Gloss Trio

Rollerball Fragrance: Tokidoki is such a cute brand because they have characters with their own unique stories. I tried the Adieu Rollerball and Ciao Ciao Rollerball ($18 each). Trust me you can’t lose these fragrances. With their unique character head as the top and awesome scents, they will be your new favorite accessories. I found the Ciao Ciao scent sweet and floral. The Adieu scent was more spicy and fresh. I would definitely recommend both.

Rollerball Collection

My Super Quick School Look: Glide the Carina Perfetto Eyeliner on your upper eyelids twice and follow up with black mascara on your upper/lower lashes.  Put two coats of the Arlecchino color Roulette Gloss on your lips. Next roll the Ciao Ciao fragrance on your wrists and neck and you’re good to go!

Disclosure: A special thanks to Sephora for sending College Lifestyles the Tokidoki products to conduct this review.

Love It: College Lifestyles Reviews Elizabeth Grant’s The Socializer

Late nights are a known part of the college experience.  Conversations with friends till the wee hours the beginning of the semester turns into late night coffee trips while putting the final touches on a end of semester project.  With the final weeks of semester approaching, we may notice we look a bit ‘tired.’  Our fresh face, bright eyes has been replaced with tired, sleepy eyes.  How can one look refreshed without a day long facial or full night sleep?

Elizabeth Grant's The Socializer Under Eye Treatments

Elizabeth Grant’s The Socializer ($40) Late Nights and Bright Lights Under Eye Treatment promises to have one look as if they ‘slept like a baby.’  We tried this product and must say, we LOVE it!  While I personally am not in school, I do have my share of late nights (as the editor of College Lifestyles and Mommy to Meems), and I still need to look refreshed and awake for meetings and networking events.

Unlike other under eye treatments, the ‘marker-like’ applicator easy to use and simply brushes the product under ones eyes.  No need to deal with a messy bottle or spillage of product; simply ‘brush’ Late Nights under eyes before going to bed AND brush Bright Lights under eyes when waking.

What we really loved The Socializer is the neutral smell (some under eye treatments have strong smells) and the soothing factor (as a redhead, all products have to work with my sensitive skin).

The Socializer works by using Ulva Lactuca, an unique algae that helps improve the skin’s elasticity and support fibers.   Other ingredients include matrixyl which increases collagen synthesis, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and regenerates skin;  Allantoin relieves irritated skin; and Chamomile soothes and calms the skin.

Will we continue to use The Socializer?  You bet!

Disclaimer:  We’d like to thank the PR team of Elizabeth Grant’s The Socializer for providing product for this review.

Guess What’s In This Interns’ Closet

I will always have room in my heart (and closet) for warm, natural hues. I hardly noticed the obsession I have with browns, clay colors, and greens until glancing at my wardrobe and realizing most of it is an assortment of earthy tones–nothing wrong with that! Without further ado, take a look at some items I can’t do without.

Boots: Charlotte Russe, Jacket: Goodwill

Being 5’9, it took a lot of convincing for me to buy these leather stunners, even after parading around the store going on and on about how much I wanted them. This was my first time purchasing 5-inch heels! I feel so confident with them on, which is what fashion is all about They look fabulous with any wash of jean and look particularly vibrant with my white, ripped jeans, which you will see in the picture below.

There comes a time when you can’t pass up on a certain item because you’ll never see it again. This cropped jacket was one of those items! I was shopping with a friend at Goodwill when we came across this piece. I especially love the buttons, which are made of some sort of wooden material. It has a very Native American feel to it and there’s no label on it of any sort, so I’ve always assumed it to be handmade. Who knows, maybe it was crafted in a colony (which would be awesome!).

Jeans: Strawberry, Blouse: Charlotte Russe, Sandals: Steve Madden

The jeans were really inexpensive ($20), so I was skeptical about the fit, but desperate for a pair of white jeans. I tried them on (which I hardly do), and my mind was instantly changed–they looked perfect! These are my miracle jeans, as every time anything spills on them, the stains magically wash out (even after letting the stain sit for two weeks–I don’t like laundry!).

I always wear this sheer blouse with a black bandeau underneath. It has drawstrings along either side, but I usually connect them to the back and tie a bow.

These Steve Madden sandals have lasted me the past two years. There are chains and really shiny imposter diamonds along the denim fabric they’re made out of. They’re always an attention-getter! Check out an up-close view of them below:

Very rocker-esque!

Ballet slippers: Bloch

I take a dance class every semester. This semester, I took ballet, requiring me to buy these Bloch slippers at a quaint dance store in Pennsylvania called The Dance Shop. I didn’t take a beginner level course because I enjoy a challenge. I’ve loved every minute of it!  The studio is the only place I get to wear my white, thigh-high American Apparel socks which are always a class favorite. They look very feminine with tights and a leotard for all of my tall dancers! You can roll them down, or keep them at full-length.

Bathing suit: Victoria’s Secret (the top is from the PINK collection)

Summer is soon approaching, so let’s end this list with my favorite bathing suit! I’m looking to buy a bandeau or halter style top in black which will give a ton of contrast to the very vibrant bottoms. I hardly go to the beach or pool (hopefully that changes this season), but I always throw this on when I do!

Looks for Less: Lourdes Leon

Madonna may have been the style icon of the 80s, but her 15-year-old daughter, Lourdes Leon, is well on her way to being a style icon in her own right. Since we poor college students don’t have access to Madonna’s fortune, College Lifestyles helps you look just as fashionable as Lourdes for way, way less money.

Looks for Less: Lourdes Leon
Tank, Skirt, Watch, Bracelet, Bag, Boots, Photo Credit

To get this look, start with a cropped lace tank (1), $19.90, and pair with a high-waisted assymetrical black skirt (2), $45. This outfit has a lot of impact, so keep the accessories simple with a thick watch (3), $15.85, and a braided bracelet (4), $5.99. Complete the monochromatic palette with a gray satchel (5), $49.50, and a pair of sturdy, easy-to-walk-in combat boots (6), $42.

Looks for Less: Lourdes Leon

Ever the fashionable gal, Lourdes transforms a black strapless minidress (7), $22.38, with some well-chosen accessories. Steal a guy friend’s oversized plaid shirt (5), $19.95, and layer it under a faux leather jacket (1), $59.95. Ours doesn’t have studs, but we keep the rocker vibe with a chain (6), $22, and ripped stockings (3), $8. Buy a pair with a simple pattern and rip them with a key. A pair of ankle booties (4), $17.99, and leg warmers (8), $15,  keep you warm in case it gets chilly. Finish the outfit with a black wristlet (2), $22. Not on Lourdes’ list, but not all of us can have  an entourage to hold our stuff.

You may not be heading to any movie premieres, but you can always look like you are. Start with a simple mod light blue dress (1), $54.99. To stay warm in the theater, add a biker-chick jacket (2), $39.99, and a pair of black tights (3), $6.99. A thick black-and-gold chain (4), $7.80 and a pair of black pumps (5), $19.99, dress up the look and make it perfect for a movie date. The British-inspired clutch (6) might seem steep at $60, but there’s a $7 beaded version available on Etsy (not pictured). Finish off the look with a corded bracelet (7), $8.11, and a black-and-white scarf (8), $12, that sweetens this rocker-chick look.

Sunny’s Sanctuary: 3 Ways to Wear Animal Printed Tights

Hello Classy Co-eds! It’s about time that you all got to know me a little better so I’m going to bring you into one of the places that defines me most–my closet. Sunny’s Sanctuary is going to be a weekly blog, so feel free to pop in anytime!

This week, we’re going into my box full of tights. As a co-ed, leggings and tights are embedded into my wardrobe, and for good reasons. One, they are super easy to put on when you’re in a hurry. Classy co-eds are always on-the-go and leggings/tights just make life that much easier. Two, they are extremely comfortable. CL readers don’t you agree?! Three, you can dress tights and leggings up or down for all occasions, depending on how you style the rest of your outfit.
One of my dearest obsessions (people who know me and my style best would totally agree) is animal print. For a few years, it went underground, but it’s back and I love it! Recently, I invested in cheetah printed tights from Forever 21. At the time I bought them, they were only $3.50 and I can say with confidence that it was the best $3.50 spent. From fashion show fabulous to rockstar ready to 21st birthday classy, I was able to take the printed tights and fir them to three different occasions.
First, I dressed them chic and edgy for a College Lifestyle sponsored fashion show at U of M, which raised over $1,500 for the Southeast Women’s Center. I paired the tights with an olive high-low dress, a cream boyfriend blazer, and olive laced wedges.

The second look is rockstar ready! I wore it to an Air Guitar championship that I planned for the Center for Campus Involvement. This look is much more casual, and everyday appropriate. I paired the animal print tights with shorts, a black blouse, a faux fur vest, and cream block heels. To accessorize I added a gold necklace and one of my favorite watches.
Last, but not least, I dressed up the tights underneath a lace skirt for a friend’s 21st birthday dinner. The outfit was paired with some black beads, a cream collared shirt, and a watch from Francesca’s. This look is a lot dressier and very classy, so the tights add a bit of sass. For accessories, I wore black aldo block heels, gold bracelets, and China Gate pastel blue nail polish.
Next time you think you’ve already wore your printed tights all possible ways, try something new! Your closet has a lot of outfits just waiting to be discovered! Come back next week to see what’s new in Sunny’s Sanctuary.
XOXO Sunny

CL Interviews Miss America 2012, Laura Kaeppeler, Part I

Laura Kaeppeler, 24, is a graduate of Carthage College, where she studied Music and Vocal Performance.  Two years ago her friend Caitlin Gomez, who was Miss Kenosha at the time, suggested she give pageants a try. Kaeppeler the advice to heart and went on to win the Miss Kenosha title. She then placed second-runner up Miss Wisconsin, a title she eventually won and competed with in the Miss America Pageant. She was crowned Miss America 2012.

Courtesy of Miss America

It’s no doubt that Kaeppeler’s singing talent gets her noticed at competitions - Gomez encourged Kaeppeler to enter because of it.

“She (Gomez) attended Carthage College with me and was in the music department with me and said, ‘You have a talent, you’re involved in your community, this seems like it would be a great fit for you,’” Kaeppeler said in her email interview. “I had no idea what I was doing or what the Miss America organization stood for. I just threw myself into the competition, but figured if I did well for not having much preparation time, I could perhaps compete the following year and win my state. That was just this past year, and here I am.”

If it was her talent that got her started, it is her philanthropy that keeps her going. Kaeppeler works with Circles of Support: Mentoring and Advocating for Children of Incarcerated Parents, a very personal cause.

“My father committed a white collar crime and was sentenced to one year in federal prison,” Kaeppeler said. “Having walked in the shoes of the children of incarcerated parents, I have first-hand experienced the emotions of pain, isolation, fear and guilt that are accompanied with having a parent in prison. As Miss America, I have a very large platform to discuss this topic at a national level, to raise awareness for the millions of children in our country who have a parent in prison, and to also encourage children who have a parent in prison to dream larger than life, and to believe those dreams can become a reality.”

Courtesy of Carthage.edu

As Miss America, Kaeppeler gets to speak about this issue around the country, attend charity events, and sing.

“I travel 20,000 miles per month and am in a different state almost every 72 hours” she said. “I can be found in a variety of different appearance venues such as speaking on my platform, visiting a Children’s Hospital as The National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network, working with our corporate sponsors, or singing in a performance venue.”

And when she’s not practicing her music or heading off to a new state?

“I am also a huge baseball fan and enjoy rooting for and attending Chicago Cubs’ games,” she said.

Check back next week for Part II, a Q&A that every college co-ed should read!

Debra Schreiber is a senior Journalism and Spanish major at Duquesne University, and a Senior Writing Intern for College Lifetyles. She is excited to see the Miss Duquesne pageant this Friday, sponsored by the sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau and the Duquesne Program Council.
