Your Perfect Summer Dress

Screen shot 2013-05-09 at 7.27.09 PM

Summer is the absolute best season for dresses. No matter what the occasion, a dress is always the answer! They are comfortable, versatile and the different trends and styles will always have you looking the classiest in the room. College Lifestyles™ gives you some tips on how to find your perfect summer dress!

The LWD

We’ve all heard of the style staple, the little black dress. But summer is no time for dark colors! CL has a new staple that every classy co-ed needs in her closet – the little white dress! This dress is perfect for nearly every occasion in the warmer months. Wear it out on a summer date with a light sweater and some bright jewelry for a pretty look. Rock a light style over your bikini at the beach. Choose a cotton option for a day window-shopping outside. No matter what style you choose – halter, strapless, maxi, a-line – the LWD is the perfect summer dress. The only time not to rock this style is a wedding. Leave the white dress to the bride. Otherwise, wear your crisp, clean, white style with confidence and a smile!

The Shirtdress

Shirtdress

The classic shirtdress is a romantic option for your summer wardrobe. The buttons down the front usually characterize a shirtdress, as well as its shirt-like collar. However, you don’t have to choose a dull option for this dress. Summer shirtdresses come in different materials like lace and all kinds of adorable prints. Also, try to choose a style with a tie belt around the middle. This will cinch your waist and give you a beautiful hourglass figure. Have fun with your shirtdress – it is a pretty and sophisticated style that is sure to turn heads.

The High-Low Dress

High Low

This is a new trend that has been sweeping storefronts and runways everywhere. The high-low dress is exactly as it sounds. It has a short hemline in the front, and a longer hemline in the back. This style of dress is a great way to show off some leg, while still staying somewhat conservative. Similar to a maxi dress, the high-low dress gives off a beachy, somewhat bohemian vibe that is perfect for the free-spirited summer months. This is the perfect dress for a breezy night out on the boardwalk or a summer dinner party.

The Classic Sundress

No matter what your style is, this is an article of clothing that needs to be in every fashionista’s closet. There is a sundress for every size and shape. Pick a style that hits midway down your thigh and choose a bustline that you feel comfortable in. Classically, the sundress is a more casual option, so opt for a light cotton material to stay breezy on a sticky, summer day. Dress up your sundress with a pair of adorable wedges or dress it down with some strappy flat sandals. Whatever the occasion, always keep a sundress at hand for an easy and chic look!

Get the Trend Five Ways: Boho

Screen shot 2013-05-07 at 11.18.21 PM

Bohemian style dates all the way back to the late 1960s and has grown and revolutionized into a timeless fashion trend. This fresh style of clothing is perfect for summer. It’s casual and comfortable, making it the ideal choice for a breezy summer day or night. Embrace the hippie-inspired, natural bohemian look with these tips.

1. Maxi Dress

The maxi dress epitomizes easy breezy style. Choose a lengthy dress in a fun tribal print or pattern and pair it with a pair of flat sandals. Maxi dresses come in all different kinds of shapes, vibrant colors and patterns, so choose one that is right for you. Bohemian style is all about wild nature-inspired prints in flowing casual shapes.

2. Fringed Accessories

Boho 3

Fringe is a great way to get the casual bohemian style. Go for a pair of awesome sandals with fringe around the ankle strap or a great slouchy over-the-shoulder fringed bag. It’s easy to play up this trend with your accessories.

3. Cinched Fabric Headbands

You’ve probably seen the fashionable headbands that go over the hair and across the forehead. This is also inspired by the boho style. Another new trend are the cinched fabric headbands that keep all your hair out of your face. This is a great choice for a hot day on the beach or out on a boat. Look for a headband in a neutral tie-dye print or bold color to spice up your look.

4. Boho Jewelry

Boho 1

Boho jewelry is inspired by gypsy fashion. It is about stacking many different chains and beads over one another and layering on different textures. When choosing earrings, pick ones that dangle. Go for tribal-inspired necklaces and load on the bracelets. Less is definitely not more with this trend, so don’t be shy and pile on the costume jewelry for your bohemian look.

5. Babydoll Top

When you wear a babydoll top it’ll look classy and sexy when paired with a great pair of jeans. Pick a blouse top in a neutral, light color with simple embroidery. You’re going to want to go a little simpler with your babydoll top and go for a style that is looser fitting. You can always spice it up with your accessories to accomplish that full bohemian look.

Now that you have the tips, embrace your new breezy style! You’re sure to get loads of compliments on this wardrobe update. Tweet us pics of your bohemian outfits @collegelifestyl.

Weekend Trip to NYC: Our Favorite Stops

There is nothing more beautiful than New York City in the summertime. If you’re looking to go on an East Coast weekend trip this summer, consider choosing the City That Never Sleeps. There is never a shortage of fun things to do no matter what your interests are. CL gives you some of our favorite places for classy-coeds to visit in NYC!

Central Park

Courtesy of freedigitalphotos.net/Sira Anamwong

Courtesy of freedigitalphotos.net/Sira Anamwong

This is an obvious choice, especially when the weather is lovely. Take a friend and a picnic basket along for a lunch on the Great Lawn or rent bikes to get your exercise while riding around the park. Walk around, enjoy the people of NYC and the small space of nature that New Yorkers love so much.

Rooftop Restaurant or Bar

On a summer night in NYC, it’s hard to see the stars because of the smog. When you’re on a rooftop, though, sometimes it’s a bit clearer. Check out this list of rooftop bars if you’re of age to get a cocktail, or check out restaurants with a rooftop option. Most of the restaurants are themed in different ways and are super chic! You’ll feel less like a tourist and more like a local eating on the deck of a high-rise with the summer breeze blowing through your hair.

Coney Island

Everyone needs to visit Coney Island at least once in their lifetime. Between the rides, the carnival games, the shows and the beach there is literally something for everyone. Take the N or Q train straight to Coney Island for a day of fun in the sun!

Soho

This is a lovely little part of the city full of ritzy stores and cute cafes. Wander around the cobblestone streets, check out some street vendors, and gaze into the windows of all the beautiful designer stores. While Soho’s stores might not be fit for a co-ed’s budget, it’s still fun to people-watch and step into another world for awhile.

Go on a Harbor Boat Tour

Courtesy of freedigitalphotos.net/thephotoholic

Courtesy of freedigitalphotos.net/thephotoholic

When in NYC you have to take part in at least a little tourism. Get tickets on a harbor boat tour and head out around sunset to see the city from a different angle. The pictures you’ll take will help you remember your fun trip and you might also learn a lot about the history of the city from your tour guide. Do some research – some trips have live bands and entertainment, especially night cruises.

These are some great spots to hit up on your weekend trip to NYC. If you have other favorite NYC spots, tweet us at @collegelifestyl!

What to Wear: Sand Bar Party

It’s nearly summer! The invitations for bonfires, beach parties, pool parties and barbeques are already starting to roll in. You might have an outfit for each of these occasions, but there is a new kind of party that is becoming popular – the sand bar party.

If you live on a lake or the coast, you may have experienced this kind of fun in the sun. Boat owners hook up their boats to other during this classy beach event, and everyone wades around in the shallow water and has a great time. CL has some classy ideas for looking your best on the boat!

Bathing Suits

Sand Bar Look 1

Since you’ll likely be in and out of the water, you’re going to want to pick a cute bathing suit to wear. Choose a trendy fringe suit or a suit with pretty embellishments. If you’re not comfortable parading around in a tiny bikini, don’t worry – there are a ton of cute one-piece options with interesting cutout shapes and designs.

Cover-Ups

Sand Bar Look 2

When you’re laying out on the bow of the boat, you might want to cover up a bit. Pick a unique tunic dress to throw on over your suit when you aren’t in the water. Find a chic cover-up that is slightly transparent to allow your bathing suit to peak through. This leaves you with a slightly modest yet very fashionable look.

Accessories

Don’t shy away from accessories. Since you aren’t doing a lot of actual swimming, you can wear some simple jewelry to accentuate your look. Pick a fun cowgirl or floppy hat to keep your face shaded from the bright sun. Pair your hat with a trendy pair of sunglasses. Bring a waterproof tote you can throw your sunscreen, magazines and towel into.

How to Whiten your Teeth

It’s almost summer and finals are just about over, which means there is lots of smiling in your future. Classy co-eds shouldn’t be afraid to smile because of the color of their teeth! There are so many different ways that you can whiten your teeth on different budgets. College Lifestyles™ has some tips for you and your pearly whites.

Choose whitening toothpaste.

This is perhaps the cheapest way to whiten your teeth on a tight budget! Choose a toothpaste at your local grocery/drugstore that is ADA (American Dental Association) approved. These toothpastes use abrasive particles to remove stains on your teeth, while not harming your enamel. Make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day and you should start seeing positive effects. Follow up with whitening mouthwash for double treatment. A great whitening toothpaste to try is Crest 3D White Vivid Toothpaste.

Choose whitening strips.

This method is slightly more expensive than simply buying a new toothpaste, but it still is college-budget friendly. Head to the local drugstore and pick up a box of whitening strips. Crest White Strips have many different options that are great for different budgets and “levels of whiteness.” Most white strips you only have to use once or twice a day for about a half an hour. The best part? You can have them on when you’re doing every day activities like cleaning, showering or watching TV. By the end of your pack of white strips, you are almost sure to see a difference!

Have your teeth bleached professionally.

This is the most expensive option, but is guaranteed to produce results. If you are someone who has stained teeth due to extended use of cigarettes or coffee, you might want to ask for a professional bleaching as a birthday gift! Make an appointment with your dentist and talk about options. While bleaching is an investment, the results are a beautiful, classy, smile!

Change your every day habits.

Cigarettes are one of the substances that stain the most on teeth, along with coffee, tea and red wine. Don’t smoke, not only to save your smile, but also to save your health! If you have to drink these beverages, try to moderate them or drink through a straw. This will stain your teeth less. Try to brush your teeth after as many meals as you can and never forget to floss!

Bonus trick…

Another secret trick that makes teeth appear whiter is to find the perfect lip shade for your skin type! For most ladies, a bright red will do the trick. Test out different shades of red on the back of your hand at the store before purchasing one.

What to Wear: Wedding Shower

Courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net/fotographic1980

Courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net/fotographic1980

It’s nearly wedding season, which is not only fun because of the parties and people in love, but also for the pretty fashions and dresses. But before you can get to the ceremony and reception, there is the wedding shower to dress for. College Lifestyles™ has the do’s and don’ts for dressing to go to a bridal shower!

Do choose a dressier option.

Wedding Shower 1

You don’t want to be the most underdressed guest at the party. It can be difficult to determine the formality of the event (unless otherwise specified on the invitation) so it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. Also, it is a celebration after all! When in doubt, choose an above-the-knee A-line dress.

Don’t wear white.
No matter how age-old the tradition may seem, do NOT wear white to anything wedding-related. That color is reserved for the bride, and it will always be a fashion and social faux pas to try and upstage the bride. This doesn’t mean you have to choose something dark and depressing for such a happy event. Opt for a pastel or floral option instead.

Do choose a feminine skirt or dress.

Wedding Shower 2

Dresses are your best bet because you will be comfortable for the long day ahead, but high-waist skirts are a great idea as well. Avoid anything too tight. Take advantage of some of the beautiful daytime dresses that are in stores right now with interesting back cutouts. Follow the skin rule – choose one major area to show off some skin. A classy and trendy way to do this is with a backless design!

Don’t wear Jeans.
This is too casual, even if they are your dressiest pair. Unless you are specifically told to wear jeans or very casual clothing, avoid denim by all means. The bride will not be wearing them, and neither should you!

Do pick out some fun accessories.
This is a fun event, so pick chic accessories to go with your outfit! If you’re wearing a pastel dress or one with ruffles, pearls are always a classy touch, whether in earring, bracelet or necklace form. Otherwise, pick pretty dangly earrings or a fun cocktail ring. And don’t shy away from colors. Summer wedding showers are basically begging you to bring out all of your fun colors!

Don’t wear a “blah” hairstyle.
If you wear your hair pin-straight every day, switch it up a bit. Try curls or an updo, especially if you know that you’ll be outside in the hot sun.

With these tips, you’re sure to be the best-dressed (minus the bride, of course!) one at a wedding shower. Have fun with it, and tweet your wedding shower styles to us @collegelifestyl!

Style by the City: Miami

Courtesy of freedigitalphotos.net/Ikuni

Courtesy of freedigitalphotos.net/Ikuni

Dreaming of beaches, palm trees, attractive lifeguards, hot weather and a great nightlife scene? Sounds like you’re thinking about the beautiful city of Miami, Florida! Miami is a beautiful city on the southeastern Atlantic coast of sunny Florida and is a very popular destination for classy co-eds to visit for vacation! Not only does Miami boast some of the most exciting beach and nightlife, the fashion has its own unique flair as well. College Lifestyles™ has some style tips to accomplish the breezy fashions of Miami.

Bright Colors

No matter what the season is, the sunny weather in Miami brings out bright, fun colors! Whether you’re on the beach amongst loads of bikinis or on the boardwalk shopping, pastels and bright colors can be spotted on everyone.

Bohemian Maxi Skirts/Dresses

Miami Style 1

This style can be spotted during the day in Miami. Chic dresses and skirts are all over the scene in a breezy, casual style. Pull off the pretty bohemian look by choosing a high-waist, white maxi skirt with a trendy, fitted crop top. You’ll show just the perfect amount of tanned summer skin. Pair the outfit with a stylish hat and a pair of sandals, and you’ve got a perfect Miami shopping outfit!

Floral Blazer

Miami Style 2

Going out on the town and looking for an outfit inspired by Miami fashion? Sport a tighter-fitting dress, layered with a floral blazer. When choosing a dress that hugs your curves, make sure to pick a longer hemline, hitting right above the knee. If you pick a dress in a solid color, play up the blazer in a bright floral print to cover up a bit when walking to your nighttime destination in the breezy Florida air. Don’t shy away from colors! Miami style is less edgy and more pretty and fun.

Cute Cover-Ups

Miami Style 3

One of the best parts of Miami is the beach packed with gorgeous people! Fit in perfectly with the native Miami residents in a peek-a-boo cover-up over a cute bathing suit. Whether you choose a bikini or a trendy one-piece suit, put a brightly covered tunic over it so that your cute suit shows through. Another trendy style is tying a button down over your suit and pairing it with a Latin-inspired skirt/dress called a “pareo,” Top it off with a floppy hat and a cute beach tote!

CL’s Guide to Bandeau Tops

Are you a fashion risk-taker like Rihanna or Nikki Minaj? The bandeau trend is perfect for you this summer! When some people think of bandeau tops, their first thought might be that these can only be worn as bathing suits. But the trend of sporting a bandeau as a clothing staple – either layered underneath an outfit or by itself – is super chic. College Lifestyles™ has tips for how you can rock a bandeau top this summer.

WIth Something Sheer

When getting ready for a big night out, you want to pick an outfit that is show stopping, yet classy. Sheer is a great way to go, and there are so many blouses and tops in stores right now that come in different colors and prints. Pick a top that suits you, and wear a contrasting colored bandeau underneath. This is a way to show off some skin without being too revealing.

With Something High-Waisted

Bandeau Style 1

High-waist shorts, pants and skirts are totally edgy right now. Rock a high-waist a-line skirt with a fun bandeau top. If your skirt is a solid color, choose a bandeau in lace or a floral print. This is a fun outfit for a day at the beach, since it is rather revealing. If you want to wear it somewhere a bit more conservative, layer a blazer over the bandeau for a cool, sophisticated and very fashionable style.

With a Fun Graphic Tank

 Bandeau Style 2

I’m sure you’ve seen “bro-tanks” all over campus as the weather has warmed up. These are baggier tank tops that could be racerback or with regular straps. Stores are picking up on this frat trend and turning it more feminine with flouncy, graphic tanks. The problem with these tanks is that it’s hard to find a bra that doesn’t show. This is where the bandeau comes in! Layer a bandeau underneath a baggier tank top in a contrasting color for a casual, summer look.

With Something Backless

Bandeau Style 3

Do you have an awesome backless dress or top that you can’t seem to find any way to wear without showing off the strap of your bra? Wear a bandeau top in a matching color to show off some skin, without looking tacky with your bra sticking out. Also, bandeaus come in all different styles now, and some are even padded, so you don’t have to worry about wearing anything underneath it. Now go ahead and wear all your backless outfits!

Summer 2013 Trend Alert: Tassels

Style Icon: Beyonce Knowles

Summer 2013 Trend Alert: Tassels

It is that time of the year again to clean out your closet to make room for fun, new summer clothes! It’s always fun to check out new trends when shopping for the next season and College Lifestyles™ is loving a trend that found its way onto the runways: tassels! Check out these tips to put together a chic outfit using the new trend.

Tops

Shirts/Dresses w/ Tassels

Tank tops and crop tops everywhere are sporting this new trend! Look for a shirt that fits your personal style whether it be classy twenties-inspired or more of a casual, western look. A fringed crop top looks great paired with high-waist denim shorts. Just make sure the shorts are fitted enough. Since there will be a lot going on up top, you’re going to want to avoid excessive volume on the bottom. Hint- tassels look super cool and stylish at a summer music festival or concert.

Bottoms

It is more difficult to find bottoms with the tassels trend without looking too “disco-seventies”. However, some shorts have a frayed, fringe look at the bottom hemline, while select maxi skirts might have some tassel detail. Explore online stores to see what you can find!

Dresses

Tassels are showing up on dresses everywhere right now! You can find them on everything from casual maxi dresses to short, fitted dresses for a night out. Look for fringe detail on necklines and backs of dresses. If you’re really feeling rebellious, check out fringed 1920s-inspired dresses for a formal evening out. You are sure to get compliments on your unique style.

Bathing Suits

Bathing suits sporting the tassels trend seem to be the hottest item right now. One-piece suits with fringe along the deep-V neckline are great for a modest beach bum while bikinis with tassels are also popular. Keep in mind that if you are going to be playing in the waves, the fringe could get tangled, so consider saving this style for a relaxing day on the sand.

Accessories

Accessories w/ Tassels

Fringe has even made its way onto accessory racks! Fringed necklaces and earrings are a great way to test out the trend, and there are so many cute, cheap options. Bags and purses are sporting fringe this season in big and little amounts. Try a large tote with a small fringe at the zipper for an understated style or a cross-over bag with large tassels on the side. Also, check out shoe stores for flats and heels with tassels right on the front of the shoes for a super sophisticated look.

Prom Styles for Short Hair

If you recently decided to go short with your hair, and prom is getting near, don’t panic! There are tons of chic ways to wear your short hair to a formal event. College Lifestyles™ has a few ideas for wearing your short hair up and down!

The Sleek Bob

Is your hair slightly above shoulder-length? Go for a classy, glamorous look with a sleek bob. Apply smoothing pomade and shine serum to your hair while it is still damp from the shower and then blow dry. (For a really great blowout, go to a salon. Sometimes they charge less, if you have less hair!) After your hair is dry, use a flat iron to give your tresses a sleek finish.

It’s a big night for you and one that you’ll want to remember. Feel like taking a risk? Cut blunt bangs for your big night, and surprise all your friends! Just make sure it is something that you really want to do, and talk to your stylist about finding a style of bangs that is right for your face shape. Another cool idea is to try faux-bangs – no commitment!

The Jeweled Look

If you feel like your short hair is holding you back from making a statement, then stop those negative thoughts! You can spruce up your cute, short pixie cut with loads of jeweled clips and pins. Try making a sleek, deep part and then hold the hair back with multiple pins with different embellishments. You will look trés chic!

The Messy Updo

Photo courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net via Rosen Georgiev

Photo courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos.net via Rosen Georgiev

An updo is possible with shoulder-length hair, despite what you may think. Have a friend or stylist curl your freshly showered and blown out hair with a 1-2 inch curling iron. Pick bobby pins in a shade that matches your hair color, and then randomly pin back curls to create a messy, piecey updo. Also, don’t shy away from a low chignon! This is possible at the nape of your neck with a few pins and some hairspray. Leave pieces out around your face for a romantic look.

Pick a beauty routine that is less everyday and more high fashion runway. College Lifestyles™ has some tips for co-eds looking to make a bold statement!

Face

With high fashion makeup looks, it’s still a good idea to keep the face simple. You will most likely choose to go drastic with your eyes and lips, so start with a fresh palette. Choose a concealer and foundation that suit your skin tone. Apply blush on the apples of your cheeks for a flushed look. Looking to add just a bit more drama? Choose a little bit of powder bronzer instead of blush for your cheekbones.

Eyes

High Fashion Makeup

This is where it’s fun to play! Makeup is an art, and that is definitely proven during Fashion Week. One look seen all over the runways this year was all different kinds of smoky eyes. Smoky eyes work on everyone, but you should still cater them to your eye shape. If you have small eyes, use shadow only on your lids up to the crease and subtle shading underneath the eye. The more dark colors you add to the look, the more overwhelming it will be for small eyes. A great tip for making your eyes look larger is to add a metallic or silver on the inside of your eyes.

Don’t be afraid of adding a little more mascara than usual or some winged eyeliner. It’s all about the drama with high-fashion makeup. Another fun trend seen on the runway was adding jewels to your makeup look. Try a tiny jewel in the inner corners of your eyes in a metallic color with a smoky eye. Your eyes will literally sparkle!

Another tip when applying a high fashion makeup look – don’t be afraid of color. Try an unconventional eyeliner shade or even some colored mascara. While you’re going to want to give these a test run before the big night, they can really make you pop and stand out in a crowd.

Lips

The best way to do high fashion lips? Go dark! Try a matte lipstick in a deep burgundy, wine or plum for a dramatic look. Keep it from looking too vampy by adding subtle color to your cheeks with blush. The contrast between pale skin and dark lips will not be as strong if you add a bit of color to your cheeks.

Retro Prom Dresses

Retro Dress 1

What is a great way to stand out at your prom? Vintage! While most classy co-eds will be sporting similar dresses in pastel colors and loads of tulle, stand out in the crowd with a classic style inspired by a different era. Real vintage pieces are usually a bit pricey, but there are excellent ways to find retro-inspired dresses for co-eds on a budget! Check out College Lifestyles™ ideas for unique, retro prom dresses.

1. Tea-Length Dresses

Prom Dress Collage 3

Tea-length dresses are chic and timeless. Tall girls like Taylor Swift have been known to wear this length on multiple red carpets. Classy ladies from the ‘50s inspire the tea-length. They used to wear this style while having an afternoon cup of tea with friends, but it has been translated over the years to a fit a more formal occasion. The style is usually an A-line skirt with a fitted bodice. The sleeves can vary, but if you really want to go for a vintage look, the slightly off-the-shoulder tank top sleeve is a beautiful way to show off some skin in a classic way.

If you’re feeling really inspired by the era, match your dress with some short black gloves and a hairpiece. This will instantly make the look more formal and you will be one of the classiest girls at the dance.

2. Long Gowns

PicMonkey Collage

Most of today’s longer style gowns have actually been inspired by some other time period! Try rocking an updated Victorian look by picking a Cinderella-inspired princess gown with an embellished bodice. Embellishments often times make a dress look more vintage. For a fitted look, mermaid dresses have been worn throughout history by classy ladies all over the world! If you would rather go for a slightly beachy vibe, choose a long flowy a-line tank dress with pale colors to look as carefree as Sandy from the ‘50s movie, “Grease!”

3. Short Flapper Dress

Retro Prom Dress 2

This is a look for a girl who isn’t afraid to really stand out! Go for a 1920s inspired flapper dress. Pick a short dress with fringe, sequins, and a hemline hitting right above the knee. To keep the look from being too costume-y, pick a simple black or white dress and don’t go overboard on the accessories or “bling.” Pearls are elegant with this style of dress and a simple black heel will accompany it perfectly.

CL Interviews: Kara McGrath of Seventeen Magazine Part Two

73023b8e672f11e2a3e422000a1fbe39_7

Let’s face it, we’ve all dreamt about a job working for a major magazine in New York City. If the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” hadn’t sparked some inspiration, thoughts of spending hours in the fashion closet or testing new beauty products for an article certainly would interest any girl!

Kara McGrath, 2012 Print Journalism graduate from Hofstra University, has made that dream a reality. She told College Lifestyles™ all about her start as a classy co-ed interning for “Seventeen Magazine” and how she turned that experience into a full-time job.

College Lifestyles™: What are some of your responsibilities as Assistant Editor for Seventeen.com?

sev-new-years-resolutions-kara-write-de

Kara McGrath: I produce a large portion of all the fashion and beauty content for the website. I pitch stories to our site Director and Editor and work with the print editors on stories that complement pieces in book. I also help out with social media, managing our interns, and celeb interviews whenever needed!

CL: What does a typical day in the office look like for you?

KM: We have a meeting on Monday mornings to discuss the stories everyone has due for the week. After that, I spend the rest of the day doing photo and product research for the pieces I’m working on. The largest portion of my workload is spent producing slideshows for the site, which involves reaching out to publicists for images and, of course, writing copy for each slide. I also manage the style blog, so I’ll assign pieces to our interns and stringers throughout the day. Occasionally I’ll be in and out of meetings about big new franchises or stories, but most of my day is spent writing! I usually attend at least one beauty or fashion preview a day as well, which is where I get to learn about all the cool new collections coming out.

CL: A lot of us at CL are preparing to join the magazine industry in a few years. How did you manage to hook a job at “Seventeen” following graduation?

KM: Usually interns at magazines only stay for one semester, so I guess I must have impressed somebody if they let me hang around for a whole year! Right after I graduated there weren’t any jobs opening up at the magazine, so I just freelanced and worked at a restaurant for the summer. However, I stayed in touch with my direct editor and one day in August I got an e-mail from her saying “Hi! We just got the budget to hire a new assistant editor—can you start tomorrow morning?”

A lot of it definitely had to do with luck and timing, but I think the best advice I can give is just be the best intern your editor has ever had. That way, if a job does open up they won’t even consider anyone else for the position because you’ll be such an obvious choice.

CL: What would you say are the major differences between working in the online field of a magazine vs. the print version?

Photo taken from Kara's Instagram, @diosmioitskara!

Photo taken from Kara’s Instagram, @diosmioitskara!

KM: I’ve only worked online, but the major difference I think is the lead-time for stories. While the print editors are working months in advance, we usually only think about two weeks out, a month tops. Web lends itself to being immediate, especially for our entertainment section. Who knows when Taylor and her latest BF are going to break up? But we have to be ready to cover it within 5 minutes of it happening.

Another reason I LOVE working online is that we get to see immediate reactions from our readers. Teen girls are so opinionated and they will be more than happy to comment on a story right away and put in their own two cents. I love interacting with the girls on a daily basis via social media! Plus, if a story isn’t getting page views, we know right away and can tweak it to make it better, whereas print has to wait a few months to find out how stories ranked.

CL: Any other advice for current journalism students or students that aspire to work in magazines?

KM: Start a blog if you haven’t already! Be active on social media—it’s weird when we get an applicant and can’t find them on Twitter or Facebook. Plus, it’s one of the best ways to stay on top of breaking news!

CL Interviews: Kara McGrath, Assistant Web Editor of Seventeen Magazine

sev-kara-mcgrath-headshot-smn

Let’s face it, we’ve all dreamt about a job working for a major magazine in New York City. If the movie “The Devil Wears Prada” hadn’t sparked some inspiration, thoughts of spending hours in the fashion closet or testing new beauty products for an article certainly would interest any girl!

Kara McGrath, 2012 Print Journalism graduate from Hofstra University, has made that dream a reality. She told College Lifestyles™ all about her start as a classy co-ed interning for “Seventeen Magazine” and how she turned that experience into a full-time job.

College Lifestyles™: How did you get started in the magazine industry? Where did you intern?

Kara McGrath: My first internship was at “Teen Vogue” in the fashion closet. It was a super intense learning experience, which made me realize I loved the fast pace of magazines, but probably didn’t want to work on the editorial fashion side. My only other internship was at “Seventeen.” I was a web intern from June 2011 right up until I graduated, and they brought me on 2 months later as an Assistant Web Editor!

CL: Did you always know you wanted to work at a lifestyle magazine like “Seventeen”?

cbf8efd4707c11e2a95722000a9f09e9_7

KM: According to my best friend from high school, in our senior year I told her I was going to move to NYC and work for “Seventeen.” I have absolutely no recollection of this, but she’s probably right! While I was at school, however, I knew I wanted to write for a magazine but wasn’t sure exactly what type. I sort of fell into the teen girl niche by accident.

CL: How would you suggest someone who is looking to get into an editorial position make his or her resume stand out in an interview? How competitive is the magazine industry?

KM: The magazine industry is definitely competitive! “Seventeen” gets hundreds of internship applications every semester. The best way, honestly, to make your resume stand out is to first and foremost make sure it’s easy to read. If I get a resume that looks unorganized, it usually goes in the trash. If you can make yours in InDesign instead of Word that definitely helps, since it will usually be cleaner and you can be more creative with the design (plus, it shows you’re familiar with the Adobe Creative Suite, which is always a huge plus!).

Make sure you show you’ve read the magazine! Nothing turns us off more than someone who pitches an idea in an interview or edit test that already exists on the site—especially if it’s new or on the homepage! Also, familiarize yourself with the language and culture of the brand, especially for one with such a specific voice like “Seventeen’s” (my cover letter was filled with exclamation points!). Chances are you’ll be asked a question like “Which celebrity would you want to see on the cover of our magazine next month?” Be sure to do your research.

CL: What is the best part of your job? What is the coolest thing that you’ve ever had the opportunity to do while at “Seventeen”?

KM: Trying all the new beauty products is definitely the most fun part! I mentioned this before and it sounds a little cheesy, but I seriously do love interacting with the girls and giving them advice on social media. I love when they ask me questions and do my best to respond to everyone! Of course, I also love that this job lets me write basically every single day.

Photo taken from Kara's Instagram, @diosmioitskara!

Photo taken from Kara’s Instagram, @diosmioitskara!

In terms of traditional levels of cool, getting to meet some of my favorite celebrities has been pretty rad. I’ve gotten to interview three of the four Little Liars (Lucy Hale, I’m ready whenever you are), and they’ve all been so sweet and totally cool with my mild fangirling. Also, Buzz Aldrin was at a recent event I attended and I practically cried because he’s so amazing and adorable. Oh, and my first interview while I was interning was with Jesse Eisenberg and he shared his pretzel with me which at the time was the best thing that had ever happened to me. My favorite interviews, though, are with rising music artists! They’re always the coolest and most passionate about what they’re doing. Plus, they usually invite us to hang out with them at their shows afterwards, which is always a fun experience!

Girly Prom Makeup

Prom-makeup-4

With prom season just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about what classy look you’re going to rock on your big night! There is so much more to your prom look than just picking out an amazing dress (although that is important)! After your dress is picked out, start thinking about makeup options for your night out. While some girls love a retro look and others like something a bit edgier, girly makeup is always a chic choice to accompany a pretty dress. College Lifestyles™ gives you tips on how to rock a gorgeous, girly makeup look to your prom!

Skin

Untitled #44

When trying out a makeup look, it’s important to start with a clean palette. Apply a moisturizer to your freshly washed face. Choose one with at least SPF 15 so that you don’t burn while out in the sun taking photos with friends!

After you moisturize, it’s time to create your fresh palette. First, use concealer on any imperfections that you want to hide on your big night. Next, choose a foundation that is right for you. If you’re using a powder foundation, make sure it is properly rubbed in so that you don’t have a cakey-look. If you’re using a liquid makeup (my personal favorite), use a makeup sponge to rub it in. Liquid primer can be great for creating a dewy glow.

Another tip- if your dress is one that you have to pull over your head to get on, get dressed before you do your makeup! This will avoid any disastrous stains on a light colored dress.

Cheeks

Next, it’s time to give you a rosy glow that’ll make you look adorable! Go for a light pink or peach blush, and apply it on the apples of your cheeks. It helps to make an “o” shape with your mouth to find out where your cheekbones are. Don’t go too overboard – you want a just-pinched look.

Eyes

Girly Prom Makeup

When going for a girly look, you don’t want to go too heavy on the eyes. You want to bring out the beautiful color of your irises, and you can do this with eyeliner. Start by lining just your upper lids with a thin layer of brown or black eyeliner. Brown is a great color for fair complexions. After this, use a bit of shimmery gold, silver, or beige shadow on your lids. Try to stick below your creases for an understated and pretty look. Finally, add a few swipes of mascara to enhance your lashes. This is where you can add a little more. There is nothing more girly than long, perfectly curled eyelashes!

Lips

Finish off the look with your lips. Try a peach or light pink lipstick in a similar shade to your blush. Choose a long lasting brand so that it’ll survive a night of endless smiles. Top it off with a tiny bit of clear gloss.

With this look you are sure to get your date’s attention. Tell us what you think about girly prom makeup by tweeting us @collegelifestyl!

CL’s Guide To: The Ten-Year Bucket List

Australia

There is nothing more inspiring than sitting down and writing a bucket list of things that you want to do in your lifetime. However, it’s also important to have dreams for the near future. Sometimes all it takes is writing it down and realizing that it’s something you’ve always wanted to do. Personally, I have always dreamt of learning how to play guitar. So this summer, I’m planning on buying one, taking lessons, and hopefully fulfilling that lifelong dream! Some of the College Lifestyles™ interns shared their goals. Here are some ideas and tips for how to accomplish your dream!

1. The Wanderlust Dream

This is a very typical dream of classy co-eds. There is something about those four years in college that bring out the wanderlust in all of us! Traveling is something that is very accessible to college students and could provide a life-changing experience.

First, write down all of the places that you’d absolutely love to see in the world. It can be anywhere from the next town over, to across the ocean. Then, check out study/intern abroad programs at your school. Also, check out websites like Contiki and EF College Break, which are traveling companies specifically for twenty-something year olds. The best part is that prices are very reasonable!

“I want to travel to Ireland and Italy with my mom!” –Stephanie Coppola, 23, Quinnipiac University Alum

“I’d love to go to Iceland and see the Northern Lights!”-Kristen Tomkowid, 19, Ithaca College

“I want to travel to Ireland with my family and closest friends!” -Kaleigh Dickson 21, Louisiana State University

“I’ve always had the desire to drive from New Jersey (where I live) to Florida. I never really thought I’d have the chance since there are seven people in my family, and it’s tough to fit everyone (plus luggage) in the car. But I’m getting the chance to do it this year because my friends and I are road tripping there over spring break!” – Nicole Veenstra, 21, Rider University

“I want to finish traveling to every continent. I have South America, Asia, Antarctica and Australia left, but it might take more than ten years for me to accomplish, even though I have Australia planned.” Marisa DiNovis, 19, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

“It’s my goal to travel all around the UK with my closest friends!” -Alexis Hallinin, 20, Duquesne University

2. The Career Dream

opportunity

This is an excellent short-term bucket list item, and the most important thing when brainstorming for this one is to never think too small. Always dream big! Start by listing all the dream companies that you would love to work for. Then, research those companies a little bit and see if they have any internship opportunities. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the HR department, even if they don’t have a specific internship posted. If you could score an internship with your dream company, it could potentially lead to a career. Take that first step!

“I recently discovered my love of travel, so I want to find a great job that lets me travel and meet people from different cultures!” – Kelly Glasson, 19, Clemson University

“A big aspiration of mine is to be a successful health/fitness/lifestyle blogger!”- Skylar Starbuck, 20, New Mexico State University

“On my career bucket list, writing or editing for a major fashion or food magazine ranks #1. Mallory Hatten, 21, University of Southern Mississippi

3. The Quirky Dream

images

Everyone has something quirky and unique that they’d love to do at some point in his/her life. Your college years and twenties are the time to try something new! Whether you’d love to do something adventurous like try zip lining, or something unique like learn a new language, just go for it! You’ve got nothing to lose!

“I want to skydive and go on an African safari with my mom.”-Ivy Deane, 20 Penn State

“I want to be the proud mommy of a capybara.” -Natalie Raymond, 22, TCU

“Attend Tomorrowland Music Festival (one of the largest in the world).” -Jessica Quintanilha, 20, UMass Amherst

“Go to the World Cup, hopefully the one in Brazil!” -Kelly Sloan, 20, University of Hawaii at Manoa

I hope these tips and CL interns’ dreams have inspired you to think about your own goals. Share your ten-year bucket list plans with us by tweeting us @collegelifestyl!

Glam Prom Dresses

Glam Dress CollageTis’ the season for prom-dress shopping! Everyone dreams about picking out the perfect dress for that big night out. Why not look as glamorous as possible for that special night? With awards season recently finishing up, I suggest checking out some red carpet fashion for chic ideas. College Lifestyles™ brings you a few ideas, so you can pick out the most glamorous prom dress!

The Princess Gown

478268e190fbd613_princess_prom_dresses_2011

This dress is the one that we’ve dreamt of wearing since watching the original Disney princesses on our VHS tapes. There are very few opportunities to dress up in something so extravagant. (Unless you find out you’re a princess. Hey, Mia Thermopolis did!) So allow prom to be your chance to really sparkle. Pick as much tulle as you’d like, but keep the bodice fitted for a proportional look. Just make sure it is something that you’ll be able to dance and have fun in.

The Mermaid Gown

Strapless Empire Beaded Waistline Empire Black Mermaid Evening Gown

This is a dress style that has always been very popular on the red carpet. This style of dress usually has a fitted bodice and center. It tends to flair out around the middle of the leg in the knee area. This is an extremely flattering style, especially for a tall girl. There are tons of different colors, designs and materials in this dress. Go for a really glam look in an all black mermaid gown with pearl jewelry. You’ll look 1960s glamorous just like the classy Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”.

The Short Dress

7BAD589E

If your school’s prom is typically not as formal, don’t worry! There are still a ton of glamorous options for cocktail dresses. Choose an a-line lace cocktail dress or one with embellishments. The more glitz and glamour, the better! Accent the ensemble with faux-diamond jewelry and a formal up-do to dress it up a little more. If you really want to add a little something extra, choose to wear gloves with your dress for some old-fashioned, vintage glamour. Black gloves look chic with a cocktail ring layered over it. Also, the best part about rocking a short dress – you can show off the coolest shoes!

We’d love to see your glam prom looks. Tag us in your prom pictures on Instagram @collegelifestyl!

Look for Less: Julianne Hough

CL’s Guide To: Cobalt

Look for Less: Julianne Hough

 Julianne Hough Looks for Less

This Hollywood “it-girl” seems to have it all: she’s got the leading role in the new romantic film, Safe Haven, the hot awards-show host, Ryan Seacrest, and incredible style. College Lifestyles™ gives you tips on how to get her chic looks for less!

Julianne Hough Look 1

Julianne Hough wore an adorable pair of floral shorts for an appearance at New Music Live in Toronto. She paired the shorts with a white, Peter Pan collared blouse and a black blazer. The star showed off her incredible legs in the short shorts and black, open-toed heels. You can easily get these staple pieces inexpensively from stores like Forever 21. Hough’s top was more conservative, which allowed her to pick a fun print and a shorter hemline for the shorts. This is a great balance proportionally and a classy outfit for a day out!

Julianne Hough Look 2

In Julianne Hough’s second look, she rocks a leather skirt with an off-the-shoulder white graphic tee. Again, she chose to show off skin in an appropriate way – this time with her shoulders being left bare. Find fun graphic tee’s from Delia’s and pair them with the fun 2013 trend – leather. If you’re going to choose to wear the outfit with cute pumps like Hough did, just make sure that your skirt isn’t too short or tight!

Julianne Hough Look 3

The third look that Hough wore on the red carpet was a beautiful sequined A-line dress, meant to look like the galaxy. This look is beautiful for a formal night out, and you can get a similar look by picking a dress or skirt in different shades of blue, with sequins to give it a starry effect. Show off some skin with a semi-sheer back like Hough did and you’ll definitely catch the wandering stares from onlookers.

Beautiful You: Spring Plaits

0303-braids-hairstyles_bd

One of the best lazy-day hairstyles is the braid, and nowadays there are so many pretty and unique ways to rock it! Some of the College Lifestyles™ ladies share the classy ways that they are planning on wearing braids this Spring.

“Unfortunately, I’m terrible at being creative with my hair. But I really love the way a long fishtail-braided ponytail looks! Maybe I’ll attempt to try it soon.” -Mallory Hatten, 21, University of Southern Mississippi

Fishtail-Braid

“I learned how to do this braid last summer that’s called a five-strand braid! It’s really difficult to learn at first, but once you learn how to do it, it becomes super easy and it looks awesome!” -Nicole Zientek, 19, Duquesne University

“I used to French braid my hair in college. It stayed in all day and through all weather, so I didn’t have to worry about it.” -Alli Heitzenrater, 22, Penn State Behrend alum

images

“Whenever I need to get my hair out of my face, I put parts of my hair into two separate braids and pin it as a headband. It gets the job done, but it’s also simple and cute when you’re running late for class!” -Alexis Hallinin, 20, Duquesne University

“Since my hair is growing out and a little short for a ‘sock bun’, I can braid and wrap in a top bun!” –Shelly Marie Redmond, CL Editor-in-Chief

There are tons of different types of complicated braids like fishtails and inside out braids, but others are much easier like a simple French braid. Try practicing on a friend first, and then - when you have some free time - sit in front of a mirror and try it out on yourself. While it may be frustrating at first, you’ll get the hang of it! Also, keep in mind that there are YouTube video tutorials for everything- just look it up for a how-to!

While intricate braids are trickier to learn, there are other chic ways to wear plaits without spending loads of time on your hair. The side braid was a definite favorite amongst the CL ladies. It’s especially a good choice when you have bangs growing out or want to keep your hair out of your face.

Cute_Hairstyle_For_Straight_Long_Hair_14

“Well mine isn’t as fancy as these ladies’, but I’m a big fan of the side braid. It’s quick and easy and great for “second day” hair. Plus the underside part of my hair has purple in it, so it looks really cool weaves through a braid!” -Natalie Raymond, 22, Texas Christian University

“I French braid one side of my head and pull that into a ponytail with the rest of my hair. It takes about 2 minutes.” –Sarah Steinmetz, 20, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

“I also am a fan of the side braid on bad hair days. I’m pretty stuck on fishtail braids though, as they are a little simpler and faster to do.”-Kristen Tomkowid, 19, Ithaca College

“I just like to take a piece of hair, braid it, and pin it to the side. It’s a nice casual look especially in the summer!” -Jessica Quintanilha, 20, UMass

“I usually start a mini-French braid on the side and then pin it back. It’s a quick and easy look if I need to look professional but don’t have much time to get ready.” -Debra Schreiber, 22, Duquesne alum

Chic Style: 5 Ways to Wear Red

Red is one of the sassiest colors to wear in any season. Known as being a romantic and sexy shade, reds can be worn in so many chic ways. With Valentine’s Day coming up, College Lifestyles™ brings you five different ways to wear the color red!

1.    Sailor-Inspired Pop of Red

Nautical w/ Red

This classic sailor-inspired style has proven to be timeless and adorable. Try tucking in a blue and white striped blouse with a crimson skirt or skinny jeans for this look. If that is too much for you, use accessories to your advantage! Wear a red beanie, flats or bag with a navy blue-and-white outfit for just a pop of the trend!

2.    Classic Red Lipstick

There is nothing more timeless than a classic red lip. The best part about it is that it can be worn by day with a peachy-scarlet shade or by night with a deeper red.

3.    Little Red Dress

You’ve heard of the little black dress and maybe even the little white dress. But have you ever considered adding a little red dress to your wardrobe? While red sometimes seems a little too va-va-voom, you can find styles with longer hemlines or higher necklines to make them more understated. When wearing a sexy color like crimson, make sure you don’t show too much skin. For example, if the dress shows off a lot of back, pick a sweetheart neckline in the front. Also, don’t go too tight – a-lines are a great choice for the little red dress!

4.    Red Trench

We’re getting into those soggy, rainy spring days. While the sky may seem dreary, show off how you beat seasonal depression in a bright red trench coat! Trenches are the perfect coat for the Spring season – not too warm and not too cold. Style it with a pair of skinny jeans, some black booties, and big sunglasses, and you’ll look as fierce as Victoria Beckham!

5.    Scarlet Pants

Red Pants

Louis Tomlinson, British boy-band member from One Direction, wore this trend the best. Red pants are an excellent alternative to boring blue jeans. Pick a straight-leg version and pair it with a classic white tee and old-school converse for a casual look, or class it up with a white blazer and heels!

Chic Style: Ocean Colors

Spring is just around the corner, which means it’s time to pull out all of the pretty colors from your wardrobe that have been hibernating all winter! Right now, one of the hottest new colors is the sea foam green you are seeing all over the department stores and boutiques. College Lifestyles™ has investigated further and found that ocean colors are major this spring!

Ocean Colors

As the weather gets warmer, clothing is going to go through its usual shift from neutrals and dark colors to pastels and brights. Step out in a pretty shade of blue or green this season, and you’ll be sure to turn heads! Whether it’s a royal blue, a pastel teal, or a classy turquoise, the colors of the sea are beautiful for all different skin tones.

If you are typically one to sport neutrals like black or white, try testing out the trend by starting off with some chic accessories. Pick up an ombré scarf to tie around your neck to spruce up a simple jeans and tee look, or pick a pair of cute chandelier earrings with a bit of blue or green in them. Even adding just a tiny bit of color will update your look.

If you’re willing to take on the ocean trend full force, then don’t be afraid of teal skinny jeans! They pair wonderfully with a white blouse. Also, don’t be afraid to mix different shades of blue or green. If you have a pale colored turquoise skirt, try pairing it with a shirt that has a print with some royal blue in it. While you don’t want to incorporate too many different shades of the ocean, for fear of looking too matchy-matchy, you can still mix in more than one if it’s in small doses!

What better way to prepare for the summer than sporting the colors that remind us of the beach? Try the trend out and tweet us a picture @collegelifestyl!
