Play Something Country- Part 2
February 28, 2010 by Deirdre

In my first post in this series (Play Something Country!), I told you that country music isn’t just about lost dogs or cheating husbands- there are some fabulous artists out there. As a country music fan, I want to make sure that the College Lifestyles co-eds know all of the best acts in country music today, and the songs that make them so good. Here are some of my personal favorites!
Toby Keith
I have already admitted that I am completely biased in relation to Toby Keith, but in my opinion you can’t talk about country music without mentioning the Big Dog Daddy. Toby is one of the biggest selling artists in country music, and he ranked as the fourth best selling artist (in any genre) for the decade- even beating out Bruce Springsteen! Toby has produced almost 20 albums and his songs are regularly rated fan favorites in the country music scene. What I admire about Toby is that he writes his songs about what he believes in, and he isn’t looking to compromise his beliefs for anyone. You might have heard the upbeat singles from his albums, but I happen to think that his slower songs are fantastic, too (Your Smile, Gypsy Drifitin’).
Listen to This: American Ride, I Wanna Talk About Me, Knock Yourself Out.
Kellie Pickler
Kellie Pickler is another American Idol alum who rose to fame and found her spot in country music. Her music is inspired and heart-felt, and if you happened to see her tear-filled performance at the 2007 CMA Awards you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. Kellie counts Taylor Swift as a best friend, and their friendship resulted in the hit song Best Days of Your Life. Kellie has received many nominations for and won awards in the short time that she has been on the scene, and I am sure that many more will follow.
Listen to This: Red High Heels, I Wonder, One Last Time.
Tim McGraw
You might have heard of Tim McGraw through Taylor Swift’s hit single, Tim McGraw, and that’s okay- there’s a reason she wrote the song! If you’re wondering just what song by Mr. McGraw Taylor refers to, word is it is Can’t Tell Me Nothing from his 2004 album Live Like You Were Dying. Tim McGraw has earned his status as one of the hottest men in country music after producing hit songs for years. His music is deeply personal, and his father’s untimely death (Tug McGraw was a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets) is featured prominently in the music video for Tim’s song Live Like You Were Dying. In addition, his wife Faith Hill has added her vocal talent to various songs of Tim’s, which are worth checking out.
Listen to This: Red Ragtop, If You’re Reading This, Don’t Take the Girl.
Keith Urban
Don’t let the Tennessee-inspired tunes of this country singer fool you- he’s really Australian! Keith Urban has amassed a huge following in the nearly twenty years that he has been in the country music scene. He has won awards for his lively and seriously catchy music. Plus, he isn’t too hard on the eyes…
Listen to This: Somebody Like You, You Look Good In My Shirt, Sweet Thing.
Rascal Flatts
Each of this band’s six albums have been certified platinum and beyond, and there is good reason for it. Rascal Flatts is the country music group that defies the statistics by being a favorite among the 18-25 age demographic, which isn’t usually reached by country music acts. I am a huge fan- some of their songs make me bawl my eyes out, but I love them for that. Check out the music video to What Hurts the Most, if you haven’t already!
Listen to This: Fast Cars and Freedom, Here Comes Goodbye, Take Me There.

I think the smile on my face says it all!
Sorry, I’m back to reality. My little sister recorded the Country Music Awards for me this week (it originally aired in the USA in NOVEMBER) and it made me think: country music isn’t only about a lost dog/broken heart/cheating husband/green tractor/Wal-Mart parking lots/ girlfriend who shouldn’t drink tequila because her clothes fall off. Okay, some of it is, but recently there are new acts which knock that stereotype out of the park (or Tennessee… Too much?) Here are my recommendations to you that will surely get you “countrified”.
Lady Antebellum
Considering this band was only formed in 2006, they surely have taken off in a few short years. Nominated for and winning Grammy Awards, Country Music Association Awards and CMT Awards for their songs, it is safe to say that their music isn’t falling into any lost dog stereotypes. Their latest single, Need You Now? Number 2 on the US iTunes charts. I’ve been playing it on repeat.
Listen to This: Lookin’ For a Good Time, Need You Now, I Run To You.
Sugarland
You have probably heard of Sugarland already, but if you haven’t, you need to listen to this country duo. They have won Grammy Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, the list goes on. Lead singer Jennifer Nettles teamed up with Bon Jovi for a remake of the song Who Says You Can’t Go Home, which was big on the radio a few years ago. Their songs are upbeat, empowering and highly addictive. Trust me!
Listen to This: Baby Girl, It Happens, Stay (check out this music video- fantastic!).
Carrie Underwood
She doesn’t really need much explanation, does she? After winning the fourth season of American Idol, Carrie Underwood has become a staple on the country music charts. She has won awards, sung a duet with her hero, Randy Travis, hosted music awards shows… What more does a girl need?
Listen to This: Just a Dream, Cowboy Casanova, I Told You So (feat. Randy Travis).
Brad Paisley
Brad Paisley- I love him! Brad has been a major part of country music for years now. His music is often laced with humor and pop culture references, and he can make a music video like no other. And the songs that he has written about his wife, Kimberly Williams-Paisley (from Father of the Bride), are the type that you only wish someone would write for you. Check him out!
Listen to This: Online, She’s Everything, Whiskey Lullaby (feat. Allison Krauss).
Kenny Chesney
Kenny Chesney’s album No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems was one of the first CDs that I bought, ever. I had fallen in love with the song Big Star, about a girl who is discovered while singing karaoke and fulfils her dream of being a, well, big star. (“She said if you work hard to get where you are it feels good in the hot spotlight”- I love that line!) Kenny Chesney has produced 13 albums, won Entertainer of the Year 8 times, and his concerts are supposed to be an experience you will never forget.
Listen to This: Big Star, Don’t Blink, I Go Back.
Are you a country music fan, or do you have a favorite country song? Let me know in the comments- I’m sure I have heard it! J

Why Deirdre Loves February: Her 13 Reasons!

‘What I love about February!’

Me at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg on Tuesday
1. Name: Deirdre
2. Be honest, did you watch the Superbowl? Sort of! I was in Dublin Airport and it was on in the background on some TVs around Starbucks. I was trying to sleep but I kept waking up to check the score!
3. Romantic comedy or love story? Ooh, that is a tough one. I like both, but sometimes a romantic comedy is a great way to relax.
4. Favorite ‘love’ movie(s): The Notebook, (500) Days of Summer, He’s Just Not That Into You.
5. Love getting or giving Valentine’s cards? Giving is the most fun because I love seeing people’s faces when they read the little message that you’ve written for them. But of course getting isn’t too bad either!
6. My Valentine’s cards have to have the following cartoon characters? I’m going to go the Charlie Brown route for this question. I’m not picky though!
7. Chocolate or flowers? Flowers. I’m definitely a flowers type of girl.
8. Favorite flower: I like all kinds, but I always have a soft spot for calla lilies. They’re so beautiful!

Burgundy calla lilies, credit to a2ad.com
9. A great Valentine date would be: Johnny Depp! Realistically, maybe a drive-in movie theatre (I’ve always wanted to go to one!) and a simple dinner. Lovely.
10. My favorite love quote: “Promise me you’ll never forget me because if I thought you would, I’d never leave.” A.A. Milne
11. Things that ‘make my world go round and I love’: My friends and family, Starbucks, General Hospital, my dog, College Lifestyles, snow days, Toby Keith, red nail polish (I bet you’re sooo surprised!), vanilla scented candles, my iPod and laughing so hard that you end up crying.
12. Favorite Winter Olympic sport: Ice skating, though it always makes me super nervous that the skaters may fall on the ice. I get so worried!
13. Anything else you love about February: SNOW! It rarely snows in Ireland but luckily this February I got to see some snow while I was in The Netherlands. Also, the February sweeps with American soap operas is always good. Plus it is the last month of super cold weather, and I love winter, so I try to make the most of it!
Deirdre is a College Lifestyles (TM) intern and a second year law student in University College Cork, Ireland. She just got back from a trip to the European Union institutions with her EU Law class, where she learned a lot but also saw SNOW!
Valentine’s Day: Your Not-So-Typical Movies!
February 6, 2010 by Deirdre
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, The Intern Dish
With Valentine’s Day rapidly approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to pick out some movies that are perfect to watch on the big day. Whether you’re preparing for a night in with a special someone or hanging out with your girls who are always there for you, these movies are a sure way to put a different spin on Cupid’s Day. Be forewarned: these movies aren’t your typical soppy romantic flicks!
10 Things I Hate About You
If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of seeing this movie, watch it! An adaption of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, the film’s romantic leads, Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, are outcasts at their high school. When a plot is hatched to set the pair up, the two struggle to stay true to themselves instead of conforming.

Not Another Teen Movie
A spoof of all of those stereotypical romantic comedies that we have all seen (and maybe loved, but that is beside the point). The main plot is based around 10 Things I Hate About You and She’s All That, with lots of other movie references thrown in. This movie will have you laughing and realising that maybe love isn’t always as corny as it is shown in the movies.
Legally Blonde
Besides having serious nail-envy for Reese Witherspoon’s character in the film, Legally Blonde is one of my all-time favorites, so I had to include it in the list. This movie follows Elle Woods as she embarks on a mission to win her love back, while learning along the way that maybe she is worth a lot more than she gave herself credit for.

(500) Days of Summer
As the tagline warns, this is not a love story. This is a story about love. Called the anti-romantic comedy, this movie follows a man’s search for the woman of his dreams. Could his co-worker Summer be “the one” he has been searching for? In addition, this movie boasts a fabulous soundtrack, funny quips and a seriously enviable wardrobe in the form of Zooey Deschanel (Summer Finn).
The Notebook
Okay, I realise that I said that these movies aren’t your typical romantic films, but this one is more than just a romantic film. Noah and Allie (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) are people from different walks of life who fall for each other. When life interferes with their plans, it seems impossible for them to be together. Plus, Ryan Gosling’s Noah is a dreamboat. Yep, I just said dreamboat!

Forgetting Sarah Marshall
One of many hilarious films by Judd Apatow, Kristen Bell and Jason Segal star together as Sarah Marshall and the man who is trying desperately to get over her, despite their proximity on an island get-away. This movie will keep you laughing, with Jonah Hill, Russell Brand and Mila Kunis thrown into the mix!

How to Create the Perfect Manicure
January 24, 2010 by Deirdre
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, Fashion, What We Love
One of the perfect accessories to the fabulous college student is beautifully manicured nails. Maybe I’m a little biased in this area. I am a nail-aholic! For as long as I can remember I have been growing my nails long, and lusting after different nail polishes. I always love learning new nail polish tips and tricks. Here are some tips that I have accumulated over the years!
Moisturise!
The first thing that I would recommend is to keep your hands well-moisturised. If you don’t, start! My fellow intern Kayla wrote a fabulous post on moisturising your hands, so I will let her lead in this area.
Begin Bare
Always start a manicure with your nails completely bare of all nail polish. Any old nail polish residue left on your nails will create bumps and bubbles in your new nail polish layer. I stick to a simple nail-polish-remover-and-tissue job, and it does the trick!
Shape Your Nails
Filing your nails can be tricky- there have been many times when I end up filing my nails way too short, leaving me mad and in pain! First, get a nail file from any beauty store. Pick the shape that you want your nails to be – short and rounded, long and square- anything goes! Always file your nails in one direction. This may take some getting used to, but if you file your nails like a see-saw they will become brittle and much more breakable. To see if your nail shape is even, look at your hands with your palm facing you. You can look at the tips of your nails and see if they’re even! Scrub your hands after this step.
Don’t Forget the Base-ics!
Okay, that was lame, but using a base coat is important! Without a base coat your nails can become tinted from the nail polish color. There are lots of base coat options (most of which also double as a top coat!) which have benefits ranging from strengthening to lengthening to super shine. Check out any beauty store for a range of these options, and you can pick which one you prefer!
To apply the base coat, I would recommend sitting down somewhere comfortable with a surface in front of you. Kitchen table, your desk, anywhere like that. Take the base coat brush and wipe it on the rim of the bottle once, and then apply it to your nail. You should be able to get your nail in three strokes- once down the middle and then on each side of the nail. Do this for each nail to ensure that you have your nails completely covered. One coat on each nail is all you need!
The Fun Part
Picking a nail polish is all about what YOU like. My advice is not to worry about matching your color to what you wear most often- find a color that you really love and expand from that. Your manicure should last at least a week, so you should enjoy the color while you wear it! My personal favorite is red, and I am always wearing a shade of it on my nails. Some of my friends rock deep purple, blue, even yellow nail polish! Head on down to a beauty store, even your local drugstore, to find an array of choices.

Apply the nail color just like you did the base coat- wipe the brush off of the rim of the bottle once, and you should cover the nail in three strokes. Don’t worry about streaks for your first coat- with the main color two coats is best, and for paler colors three coats should take care of any streaks! If you get any nail color on your skin, use the edge of something (a ruler will do!) to take it off. My own advice? A shower the next day will get rid of any residue left on your skin! Wait for at least twenty minutes before picking up anything with your newly manicured nails, and once the polish is dried to the touch, run your nails under cold water to further set the color.
Don’t Forget a Top Coat
Top coats are fantastic- think of it like a seal on your nail. Protecting the nail polish from chipping while also allowing the shine to last for longer, it is an essential part of a manicure. I would recommend putting on your top coat a few hours after painting your nails- otherwise the color can turn out streaky. Again, you have lots of choice in top coats, so find which one works best for you!
Enjoy your manicure! Do you have any favorite nail polishes? Please let me know in the comments, and I will feature them in an upcoming post! J

Ideas for the Crafty Co-Ed!
January 16, 2010 by Deirdre
Filed under CL ExCLusives!, The Intern Dish
Going back to college after a long break for the holidays, you might find yourself running ragged. Though we love being back in college, isn’t it a bit of a shock to be doing so much after a period of relaxation? Attending classes, studying, completing assignments, and any extra-curricular activities on top of that- it’s a lot! That’s why we need to find a way to unwind that’s just for us.
Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing!
Knitting
I can remember being a preteen and watching Judging Amy with my mother. Boy, could Maxine Gray (Tyne Daly) knit! If your only experience with knitting is the holiday sweaters that your grandmother knit for you in Christmases past, you should get acquainted with this re-emerging trend. Thanks to inexpensive yarn at crafts stores such as Michaels and A.C. Moore and helpful tutorials on YouTube, you can jump on the knitting bandwagon for little more than the cost of a pair of knitting needles. Celebs such as Julia Roberts, Dakota Fanning and Cameron Diaz are knitting- you can, too!
Check out a fantastic tutorial on how to knit here. Did you love Bella’s mittens in Twilight? This free pattern teaches you how to knit them! The creator of the pattern has a blog- check out the eye candy (of the knitted variety, of course)!

Crochet
Similar to knitting, crochet is when yarn is pulled through a loop by a crochet hook. Since you only have one hook to worry about, it may be a slightly easier alternative than knitting when you’re just starting out. Plus, crochet is the ideal choice if you’re looking to embellish a scarf or other piece- crochet is the best way to join fabric together! A helpful tutorial for crocheting can be found here. Again, an array of yarn and crocheting hooks can be found in your local craft store. In addition, specialty stores have gorgeous choices of yarn and wool!

My younger sister crocheted these pillows when she was just beginning.
Scrapbooking
Simply one of the best ways to remember your time in college, scrapbooking is great for bonding with your friends and for letting your creativity run wild! All you need are a few pictures and a scrapbook, which can be as easy as “insert picture here” or completely empty so that you can decorate it any way you want. So many stickers, types of paper and even funky pens for “journaling” your memories are available at local craft stores. Here is a wonderful scrapbooking site, where you can check out new products, discuss scrapbooking in message boards and even read a how-to for scrapbooking!

An ode to my cat, taken from my very first scrapbook. I was eight years old, so stop laughing!
Beading
Beadwork is a huge trend right now. It’s the art of attaching a bead to a wire, which can be used to make jewellery or can be added as embellishment to purses or to a knitted or crocheted piece. A how-to for this craft can be found here. Talk about a fantastic gift for friends’ birthdays, and a great way to jazz up your wardrobe!

Five Ways to be Fit and Fabulous in 2010!
January 8, 2010 by Deirdre
Filed under Body Image, CL ExCLusives!, Lifestyle
Happy New Year everybody! Now that we’re officially into January, into a new decade, you might have a resolution to get fit or to stay healthy. If you’re anything like me, these resolutions may be hard to fulfill without some tips in the right direction. Last year was my big “get fit” year, and I would love to share some of the things that helped me on my journey.
Here are some simple tips for how you can truly be fit and healthy (and fabulous!) in 2010.
1. Go Skim!

It may seem like a small trick, but asking for non-fat milk in your regular latte actually makes a big difference. I’ll use the example of my go-to drink, a Starbucks caramel macchiato. One grand caramel macchiato, with 2% milk, has 240 calories and 4.5 grams of fat. A non-fat grand caramel macchiato? 190 calories and 0.5 grams of fat. If you’re like me and are a frequent flavoured-coffee drinker, why wouldn’t you go skim?
2. Plan Ahead!
Ever heard of the 5 Ps? This useful saying is that Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Taking just five extra minutes in the morning to pack yourself a lunch before heading to campus avoids what I call “the urge”- getting so hungry that you lose all of your willpower to choose healthy options! In 2009 I was all about packing salads for lunch, but 2010 is looking like it will be my year for sandwiches, or “sarnies”, as my family calls them. If you’re running late, throw a snack bar into your bag to keep you sane as you assess your lunch options. Whatever your preference, don’t be afraid of Tupperware!
3. Track your Eats!

Keeping track of what you’re eating is a sure way to keep on top of your health and fitness. For this, I recommend a great website: www.sparkpeople.com. Spark People is a completely free service where you can keep an online diary of what you eat and of your exercise. If Spark People doesn’t tickle your fancy, keeping a trusty ol’ food diary is another way to go!
4. Water, Water, Water!
It has been talked about for ages- drinking water is good for you. Very, very good for you! It helps to keep your skin clear, prevents bloating and also helps keep you feeling full for longer. If you’re like me and you enjoy a nice cold soda every now and then, try to balance the sodium in your soda with a glass of water. If you prefer an extra zing in your drinks, try adding some Crystal Light packets to your water bottle. My personal favourite is Crystal Light Pink Lemonade- with 5 calories and 0 grams of fat, it’s delicious!
5. Get Moving!
When you think of exercise, you’re probably thinking of a hot and sweaty gym, complete with judgemental fitness buffs ready to critique your every move (or at least I did!). In reality, exercise never has to be that way. There are so many ways to get your exercise in- check out Stephie’s Shape Up! Series for an in-depth look at the options! From joining a fitness group such as Curves or Take Thirty (I’m a Take Thirty alum), to buying a great workout DVD, to grabbing your iPod and taking a walk, you can find the exercise option that works for you.
I hope that you find these tips useful. Let’s all make 2010 the healthiest and most fabulous yet! I’m in if you are! To borrow President Barack Obama’s phrase: “Yes We Can!”

The Dish on a CL Intern: Deirdre’s 15

Name: Deirdre Cunnane
Dream job: I hope to be an international business lawyer in the States. I’m still deciding on a city… Maybe Boston or Washington DC!
One word to describe me: Dramatic. I have to be honest here!
Favorite movie(s): The Hot Chick, Legally Blonde, Twilight, Walk the Line, The Wind That Shakes the Barley.
Favorite TV Show(s): Criminal Minds, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, Veronica Mars, General Hospital, Glee, Everwood (I’ll stop now!)
Favorite Color: Bright red. As I type I have my red laptop, my red cell phone and my red nails in front of me!
Coke or Pepsi: Diet Coke for sure. A nice cold can of “DC” is the best!
I can’t live without: My family, my best friends (I call them my besties!), caramel macchiatos, music and the Internet. And to include the previous question, Diet Coke!
Pet peeve(s): I hate when people push past you on the street without saying “excuse me”. Actually, bad manners in general bother me.
This makes me smile: Seeing my American family in the summertime, lazy Saturdays when I can wear my pj bottoms all day, movie nights with friends and free gifts with your purchase!
If I had 1 million dollars I would: I would try to save most of it until I finish college, so that I could buy an apartment in a new city and decorate it! I would buy my family a house in Salem, MA or in Georgia (this one is actually selfish because I want to visit those places!), donate some to charity and try to resist the urge to buy a ton of clothes and make-up with the rest!
Cats or dogs: I like both, but my little Cavalier, Duffer, sways me over to the dog side…
When I feel blue I: Turn all of my Toby Keith songs onto shuffle on my iPod and chill out.
My friends say I am: A little crazy (in a good way!), but easy to talk to and fun to be around. Thanks, guys!
Anything else to add: I am so excited to be a new intern for College Lifestyles! I have lots of ideas that I want to share with you all! Look out for some posts on being fit and fabulous in 2010, how to rock the latest fashion trends and… Wait. I’ve got to keep some secrets! ;-)
