Brace yourself, it’s awards season again. It was a great year for music and this year’s Grammy Awards are sure to have a couple surprises. College Lifestyles™ has a couple favorite nominees this year that really knocked it out of the park.
Sam Hunt – Best New Artist
Sam Hunt expanded the borders of country music when he came into the spotlight. Hunt has caused listeners to think of country music in a much different way than usual. Although he’s a strong contender for the title, Hunt does have some stiff competition. Jody Rosen from Billboard.com agrees that Hunt should win Best New Artist, but has doubts that he will beat Meghan Trainor after her mega-hit “All About That Bass.”
“If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” – Best Rap Album
If you’re reading this, it’s not too late. His dancing might have caused some laughs, but Drake’s album, “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,” brought some big hits. It has been hard to escape Drake’s most notable song from the album, “Hotline Bling,” which has been all over social media for the past couple of months. RollingStone.com also ranks Drake among the top 20 most anticipated rap albums of 2016, so be on the lookout for new music later this year.
“1989” – Album of the Year
Since Taylor Swift’s album released in October 2014, it has been hard not to jam to her songs in the car. Daniel Montgomery talked with experts for his article on GoldDerby.com who confirmed that Swift has a chance to claim the title. From “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” to “Wildest Dreams” and “Out of the Woods,” we’ve been singing along to the catchy sounds of “1989” for a while now. An album that produced so many hits deserves to be awarded Album of the Year.
“Heartbeat Song” – Best Pop Solo Performance
Your inner 90’s child is probably squealing – Kelly Clarkson is back. “Heartbeat Song” brought her hazel eyes back into the spotlight. Everyone loves a comeback and this one definitely stirs up some nostalgia. Clarkson released a catchy song that is definitely worthy of the title of Best Pop Solo Performance with this one.
“Where are Ü Now” – Best Dance Recording
What do you mean you don’t love Justin Bieber? Bieber has had us singing along to the radio a couple of times this year, but nothing got us dancing quite like “Where Are Ü Now.” Carl Wilson of Billboard.com thinks that Bieber has a chance to finally hold a Grammy thanks to his collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo. Wilson predicts that “Where Are Ü Now” could have the dance slots tied up.
With so many awesome Grammy nominees this year, it was hard to choose just a few of our favorites. This year’s Grammy Awards will definitely be something you won’t want to miss. Be sure to tune in Monday night to see who comes out on top.
