Valentine’s Day is coming up, and no matter what you are doing for the holiday, you need a pretty and classy make up look! College Lifestyles ™ had the opportunity to interview University of Southern Mississippi student and beauty blogger, Katie Chamel about casual Valentine’s Day looks. Katie is a self-taught, freelance make up artist and an up-and-coming force to be reckoned with in the beauty world! For more beauty tips from Katie, check out her blog.
What kind of make up would you choose for a casual Valentine’s Day look?
Since we’re going for casual, just something to wear during the school day, go for a really clean eye look and bold red or pink lips! Think shimmery white eye shadow all over your eyelid, a light brown eye shadow swept into your crease, a thin line of eyeliner, and mascara! To keep the rest of your features subtle, stick with a light touch of bronzer or a very neutral blush for your cheeks. With subtle makeup, all of the focus will be on your bold lips!
Would you focus more on the lips, eyes or cheeks for color?
This really depends on preference and what you’re most comfortable with! I personally love to jazz up eyes because there are so many different looks you can accomplish using fun eye shadows. For eyes you could do smoky purples, chocolate browns, or even golden eye shadows. If you don’t have the patience for eye makeup, go with a bold lip especially since it’s Valentines Day!
What are some of your favorite make up products for your skin?
Benefit’s POREfessional Face Primer – It’s great for even application of foundation and minimizing the appearance of pores. I have combo/oily skin and my foundation never starts to look slick when I apply this first! MAC’s Face & Body has a gorgeous satin finish and photographs beautifully, but is very light coverage. However, it can be built up. Mary Kay’s TimeWise Matte-wear foundation has amazing medium-to-full coverage and there’s an amazing color selection! Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder is high-end quality for a drug store price. For bronzer – N.Y.C. Bronzer in Sunny is the cheapest, most amazing bronzer I’ve found yet. It is light, so it might not work as well on darker skin. You can mix in NARS Illuminator in Copacabana with your foundation for a beautiful, luminous look!
What are some of your favorite make up products for your eyes?
Definitely my Urban Decay primer potion! Maybelline Color Tattoo’s work is also a great base for eye shadow. I never experience any creasing or fading when I wear these products! My Urban Decay Naked palettes are my most used eye shadows. The original Naked palette is great for warmer looks, whereas the Naked 2 palette is more cool (very appropriate for winter). My favorite eyeliner is Maybelline’s Eye Studio gel eyeliner, it’s up to par and even better quality than some high-end eyeliners I have. Maybelline’s Falsies is definitely my favorite mascara. So much Maybelline, but I think their “Eye Studio” line is phenomenal for the drugstore!
What are some of your favorite make up products for your lips?
Baby Lips balm by Maybelline is great. My go-to drugstore brand for lipsticks is Revlon. They have an amazing color selection! “Cherries in the Snow,” a gorgeous pink-red lipstick, is my favorite drugstore lipstick. MAC has those holy-grail type lipstick shades and quality to match. Have you ever seen pictures of Dita Von Teese and wondered how she gets such fabulous red lips? Check out MAC’s Ruby Woo or Russian Red for a true, blue-red lip. MAC’s “Love Forever!” and “Impassioned” are great pinks. I’m not too big on nude lips, so if I’m going for a neutral lip I’ll normally stick with a light lip-gloss, such as NARS Orgasm (gloss, not the blush).
Would you choose to match the make up to the outfit that you were wearing for V-day, or use contrasting shades?
I would definitely match. Although blue eyeliner with a bright top can be fun, Valentines Day is meant to be romantic and classic. A subtle, smoky eye will go with anything you decide to wear!
To go along with the make up, what kind of hairstyle would be a good choice for a casual Valentine’s Day date?
Romantic, loose curls! Try YouTube-ing tutorials for accomplishing 1940’s inspired curls. They’re soft and classic, and only require you twisting your hair around a curling iron barrel for a few seconds.
