What I Wish I Would Have Known: Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone to Meet New People
October 13, 2012 | by

I’ll admit it- I spent my first week of freshman year homesick and convinced I would never make new friends. Starting any new life chapter can be challenging and intimidating, but branching out and broadening your horizons is incredibly rewarding. The Girl Scouts were on to something when they told us to “make new friends, but keep the old”; as soon as I spent a little less time writing letters to friends from home in my dorm room, I was able to meet fabulous new individuals and take advantage of the full college experience. Here are some ways other well-rounded co-eds expanded their social circle.

“Keep your door open; it shows that you’re inviting and ready to make new friends. Also, make sure you introduce yourself to everyone on your floor.” – Leslie, Pace University

“The easiest people to meet were the folks you sat next to in your major classes. You will be spending 4 years with these individuals – meet them and become friends!” – Shelly, College Lifestyles CEO

“I lived right outside the laundry room. The first week of school there was a lot of traffic there and one day there was a line of people waiting for machines. I went outside, introduced myself, and got a great game of Uno going to make the waiting more bearable. After that we had a weekly game night all throughout the year.” – Kristen, Ithaca College

“My first week of freshman year I left my suite’s door open every time my roommates and I were home. Our neighbors stopped by to introduce themselves and our hall grew really close! It was like a built-in little family, right in our building.” – Rachel, Hofstra University

Try out for at least two on-campus organizations. You’ll meet tons of people through the tryout process and you may even find your best friend! ” -Mallory, University of Southern Mississippi

“Get involved! Freshmen year I went to meetings for organizations by myself. At first it was a little intimidating, but it ultimately allowed me to meet some of my best friends.”- Emily, Duquesne University
