First day of college classes are filled with many important decisions. Outfit choices, hairstyles, what time to leave for class, and what cute book bag to sport are among the many things we have to decide on before entering our college campuses for the first time. However, as the day draws closer to lunchtime, we have many more decisions to make.
A college cafeteria can be an intimidating place for the new kid on campus, but have no fear because we’re here to help you map out the dining hall and make healthy choices at the same time. The night before classes, get online and scope out the cafeteria to familiarize yourself with the food choices your school has to offer. If you’re craving…
Pizza: choose a personal sized portion of a cheese, veggie or grilled chicken pizza. You may also add a side salad instead of choosing greasy garlic bread.
McDonald’s: if your craving a burger, opt for a regular sized hamburger or cheeseburger and scratch those fries! A Grilled Chicken Snack Wrap would also be a good choice. If you’re longing for a salad, choose one with low-fat dressing. The Premium Caesar and Southwest Grilled Chicken salad would be great decisions.
Subway: although it claims to be completely healthy, you have to watch out for their complex sandwiches that load on high-calorie sauces. The best choices would be Turkey, Oven Roasted Chicken, Ham, or Veggie sandwiches all on delicious and fresh wheat bread. Add your favorite veggies to your Subway creation and steer clear of those heavy sauces. Try honey mustard, light mayonnaise or regular mustard to finish off your sandwich. Go for Sun Chips or Baked chips instead of the Doritos.
Chinese: it may be hard, but steer clear of the fried rice and lo mien. Choose steamed rice instead. Load up your plate with their mixed veggies and any chicken or beef that isn’t breaded. Choose a veggie spring roll instead of a fried egg roll.
Grab a friend and explore your campus’ cafeteria for lunch. Use these tips to help you and your classmates eat healthy and delicious!
