MTV VMA’s 2012: Noteworthy Moments
September 11, 2012 | by

Co-eds across the nation tuned in September 6th to catch what may be music’s most famed night of the year. Read on for CL’s review of the most memorable moments.

Kevin Hart’s Defense of Kristen Stewart

Host Kevin Hart discussed the recent report of Kristen Stewart’s cheating on boyfriend Robert Pattinson with the director of her new movie, “Snow White and the Huntsman.” He reprimanded the media and fans for the abundance of criticism Stewart’s received, claiming disapproval from VMA producers for his remarks.

“Everybody’s mad at Kristen Stewart for making a mistake… If she did, so what? It’s over. Move on. Look on the bride side, they’re now a part of the seven dwarfs,” he joked. “ You’ve got sleepy, grumpy, adultery, cheating…”

One Direction

If anyone came out on top at this year’s VMA’s, it’s the five boys of British pop band, One Direction. The band jumped up and down and hugged each other in excitement after winning two Moonmen for Best Pop Video and Best New Artist. Later, they gave a performance so crowd-pumping even the classy Katy Perry and the women’s Olympic gymnastics team couldn’t help but swoon and sing along. “To win one Moonman is amazing. To win two is incredible. To perform is absolutely ridiculous,” said front man Harry Styles.

Justin Bieber’s Strange Absence

Admittedly, Justin Bieber would have been hard-pressed to compete with British heartthrobs One Direction (both were nominated for Best Pop Video). However, he was strangely absent from the entire show- no Moonmen and no appearances. This is a big shock given his recent popularity and presence at last years’ awards where he won Best Male Video and displayed memorable PDA with girlfriend Selena Gomez.

Katy Perry and Rihanna: Best Friends Forever?

Forget the stage, Katy Perry and Rihanna put on quite the show seated in the audience! They seemed to have found the time to upgrade their relationship to BFF status—whispering, giggling, dancing and all! Katy even rested her head on Rihanna’s shoulder and the two clapped hands together several times—maybe a secret BFF handshake? Katy showed her support for Rihanna by announcing, “How sexy was my girl Rihanna tonight?!” on stage before present the award for Best Pop Video. The pair clutched hands before the Video of the Year winner was announced– a category they were both nominated in. Rihanna’s “We Found Love” beat out Katy’s “Wide Awake,” but as a great BFF, we know Katy isn’t holding any hard feelings.

Gabby Douglas’ Appearance with Alicia Keys

Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas shined on stage during Alicia Keys’ performance of her new song “Girl on Fire.” Gabby looked stunning in a sparkly black vest and a big smile as she gracefully tumbled and flipped on the stage after Nicki Minaj rapped the line “’cause I win the gold like Gabby.” Such a timely performance by America’s Golden Girl sparked U.S.A. pride in the audience and most likely a new hit song for Alicia.

Taylor Swift’s Closing Performance

Taylor Swift’s closing performance of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” showed off her feisty side and acting chops. She performed the empowring single wholeheartedly with experessive facials and spunky dance moves. Whatever ex-boyfriend she was singing to this night, she sure showed him! Taylor Swift’s performance style is certainly evolving from that Southern sweetheart we used to know.
