Registering to vote seems like such a difficult task, but luckily it has been made simpler. As college students one of the biggest questions we face is, “can I vote even though I go to school in a different state?” The answer is yes!

For out of state students there are two ways you can register and vote. You can have your vote affliated with the state of your permanent residence or you are able to vote in the state you attend school. This gives you the opportunity to vote for your party in the state that needs your help the most.

Residential Vote

For students attending school in the same state as their permanent residence, registering to vote will be a breeze. You simply go online, fill out the application, and send it in. Once registered you are able to vote at your districts polls.

Student College Vote

If you are a student attending school in a different state than your permanent residence and wish to vote in the state you attend school in, you must fill out a registration form indicating your school is your residence. That registration will be treated as any other registration. This new form will cancel out the registration you previously had in your home state. After registering you will be able to vote in the state you attend school.

Absentee Vote

If you are attending school in a state other than your permanent residence but want to your vote to be affliated with your home state, you will need to send in an absentee ballot application. Once you have applied for an absentee ballot, you will need to fill it out to officially vote. You can send the ballot in and have it postmarked by your state’s specific due date or you can hand deliver it to a designated location. Either way your vote will count towards the state of your permanent residence.

After you register to vote, make sure you stay informed. Really understand which party you are voting for. Make sure you agree with its ideals and policies before casting your ballot. Your vote affects who will be the President of the United States, so be sure you choose a candidate that properly represents your views and who you believe will help move the United States of America forward.

Don’t forgot to stay informed!
