Best of: MTV Video Music Awards Fashion
September 13, 2012 | by

MTV kicked off the awards show season with its annual Video Music Awards. Hosted by actor-comedian Kevin Hart, the VMAs spotlighted some of the biggest names in music such as Beyoncé and One Direction. While the focus of the night was the best music videos of the year, we here at College Lifestyles kept one eye on red carpet fashions. From funky prints to crazy catsuits, here are a few stars that shined and a few who dressed to depress.

Best Dressed

The Perks of Wearing Peter: Emma Watson

“Harry Potter” actress Emma Watson left her Hermoine days far behind her in this fun and edgy Peter Pilotto dress. The funky pattern and texture of the dress and the cute braids in her hair created a bohemian chic ensemble.

Stellar in Stella: Pink

Musician Pink exuded ‘punk-rock goddess’ in her body-hugging Stella McCartney gown. Pink had one of the most memorable looks of the night topping off the dress with her famous mile-high mohawk and statement-making earrings.

White After Labor Day: Taylor Swift

Country singer Taylor Swift kept her look simple and sophisticated in her all-white J. Mendel pant suit. She paired her outfit with a silky straight blowout and red lips.

Baby on Board: Amber Rose

Amber Rose looked stunning a fitted gown with black lace accents for the night. Along with her nude-colored lips and sleek platinum blonde hairdo, she also accessorized with a baby bump!

Worst Dressed

Jess of the Jungle: Jessica Szohr

Gossip Girl” actress Jessica Szohr missed the mark in her black two-piece ensemble. Her cheetah print head scarf looked out of place on the red carpet and with her outfit.

The Crazy Catsuit: Nicki Minaj

Musician Nicki Minaj has always been notorious for her outrageous fashion statements, but this skin-tight Versace catsuit takes the cake. She completed the look with outrageous neon yellow hair.

Girl in Metallic: Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys brought down the house performing her newest single “Girl on Fire” during the show, but her dress of choice for the red carpet was a bit of a flop. The awkward one shoulder and the flashy metallic finish of the dress worked against this usually well-dressed musician.

Flowers and Feathers: Ke$ha

While we do applaud Ke$ha for trading her usual grunge look for a cleaner one, her custom-made daisy dress was quite unflattering. The ends of the dress hung off of her body as if they were tattered and the feathery bag she accessorized with completely clashed with the rest of the outfit.
