How did you conquer humidified hair, running makeup and wearing clothes with the beautiful HOT summer weather we had this year? CL interviews you to find out how you ‘Beat The Heat’ this summer!
Beat the Heat: Go to summer hairstyle?
I usually let it air dry and leave it down or put it half up. – Kayla, 23
Bangs twisted back, scrunched curls (sometimes up in ponytail) – Kaleigh, 19
Since my hair is naturally straight it’s very manageable, even during the summer months. If it’s not down, my hair is usually slicked into a chic sock bun or swept into a cute braid. – Kirsten, 19
Ponytail. – Mallory, 21
Loose ballerina bun, down, or side ponytail. – Jessica, 21
Pinned back bangs or ponytail. – Stephanie, 24
Side braid. The messier the better. – Natalie, 22
A ponytail or a French braid. I usually leave my hair naturally wavy and let it air dry do I don’t have to use a hairdryer/straightener since it’s so hot and humid! – Debra, 22
Braided Bangs with either a ponytail or messy bun. To beat the heat I really just need to get my hair off of the back of my neck. – Brenna, 24
Messy bun or a braid. – Kaitlin, 19
My go to summer hairstyle I would have to say is, wavy curls or, low ponytail. – Gillian, 24
Never underestimate the power of a headband! Not only does it add great style, it pulls your hair away from your face on sticky days. – Chelse, 21
My hair is naturally curly so I don’t do much to try and tame it during the warmer months…just a little bit of frizz-free serum and I’m good to go! – Rachel, 19
Beat the Heat: How you kept your makeup intact?
Usually in the summer I use a primer and don’t wear too much foundation just because I’m more tanned so I can get away with it. . – Kayla, 23
Water proof mascara! Also put moisturizer on before make up. – Kaleigh, 19
During the summer months I use waterproof eye products for long-lasting wear. Since I spend a lot of time outside during the summer, this keeps my makeup fresh all day long. – Kirsten, 19
Mineral Powder. – Mallory, 21
I don’t usually wear make up, if I do it’s usually when I’m inside places with A/C so it just stays. – Jessica, 21
I wear minimal makeup all summer and do light touch-ups throughout the day. – Stephanie, 24
Model in a bottle spray works miracles. – Natalie, 22
I wear very little makeup in the summer. Since I’m very active and my job requires me to be outside, it’s just easier. When I do it’s usually just a bit of foundation, mascara and gloss. – Debra, 22
Avoid liquid make up. Powders are amazing and you can’t feel them once you put them on. For eyes, putting black eye shadow over my eye pencil stops it from running. I also try my hardest not to touch my face during the day! – Brenna, 24
Moisturize first! And nude powder before bronzer. – Kaitlin, 19
I’m currently obsessed with BB cream. It’s the only thing I need in terms of keeping my make-up intact. Also, to set it I would brush bronzer on my face in areas that the sun would normally hit. Just to keep it natural. – Gillian, 24
Finishing powder is my best friend. After I apply my makeup I dust some mineral powder on my face to set it and make it last longer. – Chelse, 21
I try not to wear any face makeup in the summer, especially when it’s hot. Just a little waterproof mascara and some lip-gloss. – Rachel, 19
Beat the Heat: Favorite summer friendly outfit?
Shorts and a t-shirt with funky sandals and accessories. – Kayla, 23
My favorite outfit this summer is SUNDRESSES. I don’t have many, but I feel like they are so comfy. They don’t cling to your body so they give you room to breath. – Kaleigh, 19
You can’t go wrong with a sundress. This summer friendly frock is playful and practical. You can sport a sundress during the day and keep the makeup and accessories minimal or you can amp it up at night with a fabulous pair of wedges and statement jewelry. – Kirsten, 19
Shorts and a flowy top. It’s easy and effortless. – Mallory, 21
My blue sundress with white wave pattern goes with heels, sandals, ballet flats, cardigans, and all kinds of jewelry. It is my go to dress I can always count on to look great. – Jessica, 21
Shorts and a tank-top because it’s nice and cool in the summer. Plus you can be active and not worry about any fashion blunders. – Stephanie, 24
Sundresses always make you look pulled together while keeping you cool. – Natalie, 22
I LOVE sundresses. Light and breezy! – Debra, 22
Dresses! Dresses are my best friend in the summer. Let’s face it, they are more comfortable than pants and are much less hot. – Brenna, 24
Cut off shorts (I love my Free People purple ones) with a crop lace tank, a jean vest, and a simple pair of sandals or sneakers. I love adding a jean vest because if it gets a little hot, it is easy to take off. But at night it is nice to have just in case it gets a little windy. It is also a very trendy item! – Kaitlin, 19
A summer dress. It’s so feminine and can take you from day to night. – Gillian, 24
Throwing on a high waisted dress and wedge heels is totally effortless but gives the appearance you took a long time getting ready. It’s fun, yet polished. – Chelse, 21
Sundresses! So comfortable and versatile. – Rachel, 19
Beat the Heat: Summer activities that didn’t break the bank?
Camping trips with friends are always fun, going on hikes and swimming in lakes are always good times. Also, many free summer events where there are fireworks and live music playing. – Kayla, 23
Beach day, pack a lunch and then grab some towels and music. Lie out or swim to your hearts desire. Partied at a friend’s for the night, rather than go out. – Kaleigh, 19
As a Jersey girl, I live for the shore. During the summer I take advantage of the nearby beaches. Catching some rays on a beautiful beach is always a welcome summer activity. – Kirsten, 19
Picnics in the park with friends! – Mallory, 21
My neighborhood has pools and fitness centers I go to almost every day. I also go to DC; getting iced tea or coffee and walking around checking out museums, monuments and fun shops with friends is a great and relatively cheap way to spend a day. – Jessica, 21
Cottage weekends. Having a bunch of friends at a cottage saves money on food, beverages, and accommodations! And it’s more fun than a night out down town. – Stephanie, 24
Hanging out with friends at the pool has a vacation vibe without the vacation price. – Natalie, 22
Mini-golf for sure. I think going on hikes is great too, or just for a walk in your local park. Picnics make for a great summer date! – Debra, 22
Hit up the beach (if you can be in the sun for longer than 5 minutes without getting burned). Reading outside on the balcony from the comfort of the shade. Getting together with friends for a BBQ instead of having to go to a restaurant and paying an arm and a leg. – Brenna, 24
Back yard BBQs! Have everyone bring something to eat and drink so then the menu and the money is split up between the group! – Kaitlin, 19
Going to the beach, borrowing books and magazines from the library to read outside, inviting friends over for a “pot luck” BBQ and having a picnic in the park. – Gillian, 24
Museums are usually free or have student discounts. It’s a unique activity and you can beat the heat in the A/C. – Chelse, 21
Hiking, bonfires, and lawn seats at concerts (which usually go for 30-50 dollars) – Rachel, 19
Beat the Heat: The best part of my summer was?
The best part of my summer was going to music festivals with a big group of friends. It’s good to see all the live music, meet new people and also see people I haven’t seen in awhile. – Kayla, 23
The best part of my summer was a night out for my friends 19th birthday. We played washer toss, had a BBQ, cake, and lots of beverages. We wound up camping outside in a huge tent. Camping will always and forever be my favorite part of the summer. – Kaleigh, 19
The best part of my summer was spending time with my family and friends from home. Since I live away at school, the summer is a welcome time to kick back and enjoy the company of those that are closest to my heart. – Kirsten, 19
Working for CL because it helped me work on my skills as a writer! – Mallory, 21
The best part of my summer was seeing great friends and making so many new ones through CL and in my neighborhood! Since coming back from school I’ve met some really amazing people. I’ve made s’mores, seen Arlington Cemetery, tried Bikram yoga, cooked new foods, seen new movies and read some fantastic books at the encouragement of my friends. – Jessica, 21
Road trips, because you have random adventures with the people you care about. They always make for a good story! – Stephanie, 24
Getting to sleep in on my days off… An uncommon luxury during the school year. – Natalie, 22
I went to a Fourth of July party and it was great! People brought lots of yummy food, and the pool was nice and relaxing! – Debra, 22
3 things stand out this summer. A weekend trip to PEI. Friends, food and fun all at a beach. Not much can top that. Multiple nights of fireworks. No matter how old I get I still love a night filled with fireworks. And lastly being able to justify a late night ice cream run because of the heat! – Brenna, 24
Snorkeling in Mexico! It was an amazing experience to be able to see such beautiful wild life (fish and even a turtle and a sting ray!). It was definitely a moment I will never forget. – Kaitlin, 19
