Fashion blogger, Julia Engel, is the perfect definition of a “Classy Co-ed”. College Lifestyles was able to interview the 21-year-old recent college graduate, who writes the personal style blog, “Gal Meets Glam”. Creating her blog without ever having looked at one previously, Engel has seen amazing success in just one year of making Gal Meets Glam with over 4 million views. At the University of the Pacific, the blogger juggled classes, sorority membership, and managing her popular blog- all done glamorously, of course! If you are ever looking for a few tips to add a little glam into your day, check out her blog Gal Meets Glam .
Q: Can you tell our College Lifestyles readers a little bit about your blog?
A: My blog chronicles my personal style along with sharing my favorite trends and beauty tips. I hope to inspire women to feel confident in what they wear and take a little risk now and then. My target audience is any girl (high school to career woman) that is looking for style and beauty inspiration, ideas and tutorials.
Q: When people look at your blog, what do you want them to take away from it?
A: I want people to feel inspired to take that extra little step in the morning and add something to their outfit to brighten up their day and make them feel more confident. My blog is called Gal Meets Glam because I like to add a little bit of glam to each of my outfits, whether it be a swipe of red lipstick, a sparkly clutch or some heels!
Q: What inspired you to create Gal Meets Glam?
A: I originally started my blog never having looked at a blog before! I wanted to create a place where I could share the amazing things I was finding online. It eventually led to me sharing my own personal style and beauty tips.
Q: What is your “go-to” piece for this summer?
A: My go-to summer item is always a new dress that can be worn during the day with sandals and dressed up for the evening with heels and some jewelry. I love dresses, especially in the summer because they are so lightweight and breezy and it’s easy to throw on a sweater if it gets chilly.
Q: You just hit a big landmark for your blog – your one-year anniversary of Gal Meets Glam! How did you make the blog as successful as it is now in such little time?
A: Thank you! It was very exciting to reach a full year and look back and see how far I have come. I never imagined that my blog would gain such a great, supportive following. I never really did anything particular to grow my blog, except that I stayed consistent and made it a priority. It was hard sometimes juggling it with school and my other activities, but I enjoy it so much that it was worth it.
Q: You were involved in Delta Gamma in your college days. What aspects of being in a sorority have contributed to your blogging work ethics?
A: Learning how to juggle a bunch of things at once is something that I definitely picked up in [my] college years. My sorority helped me in having a group of people to turn to when you when you need help or someone to talk to. All of my sorority sisters have been huge supporters of my blog and have given me encouragement along the way!
Q: Why do you think being involved in a sorority throughout college is a positive experience for young women?
A: Being in a sorority really lets you build a bond with each other, unlike any other. You are surrounded by such a diverse group of girls and can learn from each and every one of them. You are all there to support each other through good times and bad and help each other in times of need. It’s not only a great way to connect with girls, but [to] get involved in something that supports such amazing causes as well as take on leadership positions. You really get out what you put into it!
Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring bloggers?
A: Your passion really shows through to your readers when you write about what you love and what inspires you! Just be yourself and come up with your own original content. People don’t want to see the same thing on every blog, so stand out and be different! It’s great to get inspiration from other bloggers, but stay true to who you are and what you love. Also, be consistent and post regularly! It’s so much fun and you will love it
