Here’s some more tips for starting off your career search using LinkedIn! If you missed 1-5, check them out here.

6. Join Groups related to your profession.
-Search for professional organizations using the box in the top right corner

Why: These groups offer valuable resources! You get to network with those already established in your chosen field and to learn about the challenges facing the industry.

7. Ask questions in group forums/Answer questions in group forums
- Look at the discussions already started in a group, are their any that you could contribute to? Are there some things that have been said that you don’t understand? Ask someone to clarify terminology and build your industry knowledge!

Why: By participating in discussions you will gain visibility and knowledge. Who knows, maybe that nice person who answered your question will be hiring for an entry-level position soon!

8. Connect with potential mentors

- Does someone in the group have an expertise that you want to know more about? Email them! After joining the American Library Association group I found many wonderful librarians who gave me insight into my chosen profession and I got this ‘insider knowledge’ just by asking.

Why: These people are a valuable resource and most of the time they are happy to help a student out. They remember being young and starting their career and will have information about the best path to your goals.

9. Follow Companies.

-Is there a specific company that you’ve always wanted to work for? Learn more about them by following the company profile on Linkedin. You’ll be able to see recent departures, hires and promotions!

Why: This is an easy way to monitor what the company is looking for in an employee. Knowing who was hired for an entry-level position previously can help you monitor where you stand and what areas you may need to work on.

10. Share your profile!

Why: You’ve done all this hard work, why not show it off?! Add the link to your profile to networking cards, email signatures and your Facebook profile.
