Healthy Eating at BBQs and Beach Parties

What better way to kick off the start of summer vacation then kicking back on the beach or in a backyard with your college friends? Nothing beats soaking up the rays and taking a dip in the ocean or pool during the welcome weeks off of school.
If you’re health conscious, the food that is served at these parties can be the cause for many a headache, especially since you want to maintain that beautiful bathing suit figure you’ve been working hard for.

No need to fret, I have the solution for you! These easy tips will allow any co-ed to have a great time celebrating at any summer party, and you can leave satisfied without feeling stuffed to the gills.
Idea 1:
Brown-Bag It!

When I think of BBQs and summer parties, I think of heavy, sauce-covered meats and coleslaw swimming in mayonnaise. Why not be savvy, tip the scales in your favor and pack your own eats?
Kebabs are a delicious, healthy solution to your dining troubles.
A kebab is made of cubed meats (tofu and salmon work well, too!) and veggies. The sky is the limit with this dish, and you can be as creative as you’d like.

For example, you could make a Greek-themed kebab with lamb, black olives, peppers and tomato. After the meat is prepared (make sure to brush a bit of olive oil on your protein choice prior to grilling) and the veggies are ready, enjoy your meal with this great tzatziki sauce, which is easy to prepare and should be kept chilled til you‘re ready to chow down.
Idea 2: Portion Size Counts!
If packing your own food isn‘t an option, make sure you dole out the proper serving size of each dish. When I’m in this situation, I like to eat sensible portions off of a smaller plate. By doing this, you will feel as full and satisfied as if you had eaten a larger meal on a larger plate without going overboard.
Correct portion sizes are as follows, according to WebMD:
- Meat/Protein: Deck of Cards
- 2-3 Pieces of BBQ Ribs: Checkbook
- ½ Cup Potatoes: Lightbulb
- 1 Cup Macaroni and Cheese: Baseball
- Corn: Pencil
If this seems like a lot to remember, keep in mind that balance is key!

Idea 3: Stay Active!

The beach provides so many options for staying active: you can walk along the shore and take a dip in the ocean, not to mention sports that take place right next to your towel. There always seem to be people playing beach volleyball, throwing a football around and even playing soccer on the beach!
Why not get your group of friends to play a friendly game against each other or other beach-goers? Not only will you work up a sweat, but you’ll have the opportunity to make new friends who may even be students at neighboring schools!

This is great! I love the beach. And eating. And eating on the beach!
